my mid-day pick-me-up

Nope, I’m not done with Wimbledon yet: TENNIS magazine’s Peter Bodo winds down his grass season blogging with some anecdotes; first up is this entry on the on-court antics of French doubles team Arnaud Clement and Michael Llodra.

More tennis marketing ploys: This year’s China Open held an open call for a theme song and received over 1,300 entries. And their “Kappa Tennis Cheering Squad Show” (what an awesome name!!) will send winners to compete in the final Beijing round of the Miss World competition.

Making me hungry: Officials for the 2012 Olympic games unveiled the plans for their Pringles-esque Velodrome. The consortium involved with the design includes Hopkins Architects, the firm who designed the LTA National Tennis Centre.

(OT) Mocassins en vogue: NYT‘s David Colman makes a case for Top-Siders.

Serena Williams showed up to the ESPYs in a Grecian-themed ensemble. We’re loving the chiffon dress and the diamond drop necklace. Serena was nominated for “Best Female Tennis Player” and “Best Championship Performance”.

Andy Roddick and James Blake were also in attendance, both up for the “Best Male Tennis Player” award. (L.A. locals: James will be signing his new book at the Torrance Borders this Saturday.)

fashion focus: for the ESPYs, masha goes vintage

Russian Maria Sharapova took a break from fending off Fed Cup controversy with some partying in Hollywood. On Tuesday night, she hit the ESPYs “Extreme” party at The Roosevelt wearing a beige empire waist Prada dress paired with a vintage clutch. She’s still all about the tiered layers, isn’t she? We love the ruffled collar, too.

Masha followed this up with a vintage Chanel corset dress at last night’s show, where she won the “Best International Female Athlete” award, besting Justine Henin and golfers Lorena Ochoa and Annika Sorenstam. She also picked up the “Best Female Tennis Player” ESPY over Henin, Jelena Jankovic, and Serena Williams. Congratulations to her.
