davydenko shows off airness jackets

October 14, 2007

Kolya Davydenko showed up for an autograph session (is that an Aeroflot flight attendant next to him?) in a ho-hum graphic jacket, and for the Kremlin Cup trophy session in a warm-up version of the argyle sweater vest he’s worn before. Perfect for making out with his trophy.

novak djokovic - ba-ca trophy, vienna

World No. 3 (and goateed) Novak Djokovic racked up his fifth title this year at the BA-CA Tennis Trophy in Vienna by beating Switzerland’s Stanislas Wawrinka 6-4, 6-0. Not bad for his first tourney since getting to the finals of this year’s U.S. Open.

nikolay davydenko - kremlin cup

And not too far away, Nikolay Davydenko was mashing with his Kremlin Cup trophy after beating Paul-Henri Mathieu. This is the Russian’s first title of the year.

nikolay davydenko kremlin cup

…about this drop-to-the-knees thing being Federer-esque (it’s true), we’ll cut Nikolay Davydenko some slack. This is a very appropriate response from the Russian after he beat Paul-Henri Mathieu 7-5, 7-6 (9) to win this week’s Kremlin Cup. He’s had a so-so 2007 so far (this is his first title of the year), plus he’s mired in this match-fixing mess that isn’t quite ready to go away just yet.

Congrats, Kolya. But if you keep winning titles, you should get a different post-victory schtick. For now, we won’t mind.

p.s. We’ve got new winners for the ATP stops in Vienna, Stockholm and Moscow; and the women’s stops in Bangkok and Moscow. This week’s trophy watch will be up later today.

Stella’s in the black: Daily Mail reports that Stella McCartney‘s eponymous fashion label is in the black after five years of losses, boosted by a 50% rise in sales at its flagship store in the UK as well as two fragrance lines, and of course her adidas by Stella McCartney collection. But she shouldn’t breath easy yet: she has a long way to paying back the £15 million investment poured into her company by the Gucci Group.

PETA-friendly crocodile skin at Lacoste: The minds of Lacoste and industrial designer Michael Young have come together to reinterpret the company’s trademark polo. They melded fabric and with a plastic ink which was then baked to create a blistering and texturized skin. The result: crocodile-esque scales on the Plastic Polo, and metallic scales on the Plastic Polo +. Like most amazing things in this world, the shirts have a limited run available at colette.

Ivo’s in the record books: Sometime during Croat Ivo Karlovic‘s run in the Japan Open last week (where he made it all the way to the semis), he hit his 1,000th ace of the season, making him the fourth player (along with Goran Ivanisevic, Andy Roddick, and Pete Sampras) to hold this distinction.
