fashion: finally, sania shines in adidas!

January 18, 2008

Does anyone feel like we’re going though tennis storylines faster than the clackers go through handbags? (Btw, if you don’t want to buy, you can always rent…) In the olden days, we’d still be debating whether Martina Hingis was really reckless enough to do blow at Wimbledon. (Imagine her snorting the lines from her Venus Rosewater dishes!) But fear not, Swiss Miss. You can stay safely in retirement. First, the publicists are doing their jobs; in the SEWTA media guide, there’s no indication of why you retired the second time. Second, we’ve since replaced you with other scandalous bits, like Sania Mirza‘s latest run-in with Indian officials.

Apparently, someone filed a complaint after seeing this photo of Sania at the Hopman Cup with her bare feet almost touching the Indian flag. This is in violation of the country’s Prevention of Insult to the National Honour Act, but not in violation of the Harass Athletes Proudly Representing Your Country Act. Uhh, have you seen the picture? It’s called depth perception, folks. Figure it out. I’m more over this than Masha is over Nole‘s impersonations.

But since we’re talking about grievances, I totally had beef with Sania’s pre-Aussie Open adidas gear. I had high hopes, wanting her to break free from Lotto, but instead she played in some standard issue three-stripes from her new clothing sponsor.

Alas, all I had to do was wait, because she’s been rocking the s**t out of this Edge Cap Sleeve Top. It flows and works well with her sizeable rack.

Up next for Sania is Venus Williams in the third round.

in the second round, a match worthy of a fashion final

January 18, 2008

If TSF had our way, the later rounds of a Slam would have great tennis and great fashion. Sometimes, that doesn’t work out (ahem, Justine Henin), like the case of the second round match between 27th seed Maria Kirilenko and Akiko Morigami.

Maria blew Akiko out of the water 6-1, 6-1 in a second round match at the Australian Open, and could put up a fight against the not-quite-100% Anna Chakvetadze on Saturday.

The fashion scoreline was a lot closer, though. Maria passes muster (mustard?) by representing the earth tones hit week. She brings out a pleated skirt and white tank — both part of the the Spring line from adidas by Stella McCarthey. The yellow is a refreshing change from all the other women wearing various shades of pinks and purples this fortnight.

In the other corner…: And Akiko, who celebrated her 28th birthday last Saturday, previews the new Spring line from Fila Japan. Her outfit plays with pink and ruffles (at the sleeves) and and stays sporty with thick horizontal stripes of black, white, and red.

Whose outfit do you prefer? Tell us!

Hold your horses: The adidas spring line won’t drop for another few weeks (February). In the meantime, you can get your fix by raiding the Fall/Winter clearance. The tennis skirt ($60) is my pick. Browse the rest of the goods here.

And same goes for Fila Japan. They’re still in winter mode on the interwebs. We’ll make sure to update you when everything’s ripe for the picking.

fashion focus: when a frog turns to prince

January 18, 2008

Eccentric American Vince Spadea is still in the running for an Australian Open title. He reached the third round by taking out Denis Gremelmayr in five sets: 4-6, 6-2, 6-3, 2-6, 9-7. Spadea took out 30th seed Radek Stepanek in the first round.

Prince charmed him: Vince is cleaning up after all! He recently signed a sponsorship contract with Prince, which, along with a racquet deal, gives him official Prince tennis clothing to wear at ATP Tour events.

Le sad. We cringed at the sight of those (bedazzled) trucker hats from his own line, but they had a place at the table.

Going 2.0: “The Vindawg” has embraced the web full-on. Watch YouTube videos of his rapping (but really, more like spoken word). And now that I think about it, I hope his homepage layout doesn’t change. At this point, it’s so outdated that it’s hip again!

Buy: If you’re not in America right now, you probably still have money to spend. Browse the latest Prince goods here. Enjoy.
