Maria Sharapova - Indian Wells 2008

Maria Sharapova and Nike stay with white for the Pacific Life Open. Instead of a custom kit, she goes pret-a-porter with the spring Fauna separates.

Scoreline: The fourth seed took out Cohen-Aloro in the second round and had to work double-time to beat Eleni Daniilidou 7-5, 6-3 the round after. Up next is Alona Bondarenko, who creamed Amelie Mauresmo 6-1, 6-2.

Buy: Nike Fauna Tank, $60; Fauna skirt, $60.

Bammer, Andreev, Seppi - wearing green

These three pros won’t get pinched for their oncourt wardrobe this year: Sybille Bammer in Bangalore, Igor Andreev (Under Armour) in Acapulco, and Andreas Seppi (Fila) at the Pacific Life Open.

Have a safe and fun St. Patrick’s Day celebration.

Roger Federer feet

As if Roger Federer doesn’t get enough love, see this thread over at MTF about his feet.

There really is a place on the internet for everything.

Kurt Russell - Goldie Hawn - Indian Wells 2008

Actors Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn enjoy a breezy and sunny day of matches at Stadium Court 1 of the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.

FYI: The Pacific Life Open, a Tier I tourney for the women and one of nine Masters Series events for the men, will run through Sunday, Mar. 23. Defending champions are Rafa Nadal and Daniela Hantuchova.

dmitry vlog from indian wells

March 17, 2008

Veteran ATP blogger Dmitry Tursunov turns to video at this week’s Pacific Life Open in Indian Wells. He has three up so far — one reaming stringers for effing up his racquets in the first round, another poking through the bag of chair umpire Cedric Mourier, and this one where he’s in a mad rush to get his laundry done.

Dmitry Tursunov - Indian Wells - vlog

He was freaking out about getting his shirts cleaned because he “can’t really play topless.” Are you sure? Tommy Haas pushed the envelope with sleeveless tees, and now everyone’s wearing them. Perhaps you can take the lead with shirtless campaign.

Cute vintage Mickey Mouse tee, btw.

dream match 2008

March 17, 2008

Tennis greats Martina Navratilova, Steffi Graf, and Kimiko Date came together for the “Dream Match 2008” exhibition at Tokyo’s Ariake Stadium on Saturday, March 15.

Kimiko Date - Steffi Graf - Dream Match 2008

Steffi lost to Date 6-2, 6-3. FYI: In 1996, Date beat Steffi for the first time (at a Fed Cup), and pushed her during a 2-day Wimbledon semi (that’s the match where Steffi got a wedding proposal).

Steff Graf - Dream Match 2008

Steffi wore all-white adidas during her match against Martina. Steffi won in a tiebreak. I miss that eastern forehand!

Martina Navratilova - Dream Match 2008

Martina in Under Armour.

fila stripes take a break in the desert

March 17, 2008

janko-tipsarevic-iw08-1.jpg

The boys of Fila shed their stripes for their two-week party in the California desert. All are wearing color block shirts from the Heritage Group:

Janko Tipsarevic - Indian Wells

Janko Tipsarevic crashed out of the first round. He took the first set tiebreak 7-1 but lost the next two 6-7 (6), 4-6. Both he and Marat Safin are still on my “must-see” list.

Marin Cilic - Indian Wells

In one of the later day matches from Sunday, gigantor Marin Cilic lost to compatriot Ivan Ljubicic. The winning scoreline for the 23rd seed (my, how the mighty have fallen!): 7-6(7) 7-5.

Dmitry Tursunov - Indian Wells

And the bearded Dima lost to Juan Ignacio Chela 7-6 (7-1), 6-7 (6-8), 4-6 in the second round. I saw Dmitry hit for a little bit at one of the practice courts.

Buy: Fila Heritage colorblock crewneck, $45. The rest of their current tennis gear here.

Bonus round: More pictures from Janko’s first round match after the cut…
