rafa’s dispatches from key biscayne

March 26, 2008

typewriter.jpg

It has been brought to our attention that Rafa Nadal will be blogging for TENNIS.com during this week’s Sony Ericsson Open in Key Biscayne, Fla.

He’ll talk about his matches and share personal photos that he takes and poses for during the next week-and-a-half.

“We’re thrilled to have Rafael Nadal, one of the most exciting players in the game, blogging for TENNIS.com during the Sony Ericsson Open,” said TENNIS.com and TENNIS Magazine editor-in-chief James Martin. “Rafa will take our fans behind the scenes for exclusive content that they can’t get anywhere else.”

Archives: This isn’t Rafa’s first stab at blogging. He’s done it twice for the ATP, even getting an “Editor’s Choice” distinction for his posts in June 2006. He also wrote from Roland Garros last year.

Monica Seles - Dancing with the Stars elimination

Nick called it: Monica Seles and magician Penn Jillette were the first two to be eliminated on Dancing with the Stars this season.

Merger mania: The Sun-Sentinel‘s Charles Bricker keeps his fingers crossed for a merger between the ATP and the SEWTA.

Srichaphan’s last attempt? The powers that be have called on Paradorn Srichaphan to represent his country in the upcoming Davis Cup tie, and he’s said yes. The former world No. 9 is finally ready to play after a 14-month wrist injury layoff (and honeymoon). Srichaphan will make one more attempt at staying healthy. If he’s injured again, he’ll likely retire. (Xinhua)

The shirt is not for sale: Those of you jonesing for that grey adidas (“A. Dassler, State”) tee that the pros have been training in won’t be able to find it in stores (adidas made a very limited run for their VIPs).

Cry some more: Watch this animated and moving video about founder Adi Dassler.

And when you’re done… To lift your spirits, check out the latest adidas Originals pieces. Some of those windbreaker/track jackets are effin gorgeous!

Hotel Gansevoort - Serena vs. Rafa 2008

While it could be said that there were times Rafael Nadal and Serena Williams walked on water — he owns three back-to-back French Opens and she has already racked up eight Grand Slam titles so far — the organizers of the Sony Ericsson Open took it a step further by staging this exhibition on Monday.

Rafael Nadal - Sony Ericsson Open - Hotel Gansevoort 2008

It took a team five days to construct invisible (acrylic) platforms at either end of the Hotel Gansevoort’s rooftop pool. It would’ve been so much cooler had they brought in people to make it seem like it was business as usual; as if tennis on water happens all the time.

By the way: Gansevoort South, the South Beach sister to the Hotel Gansevoort in the Meatpacking District, is opening quietly this month after some delays. It’ll be worth the wait, though. The hotel’s main kitchens will be helmed by the ladies of the ONE Group; they’ve even scheduled to open a branch of their STK restaurant there in November.

Duly noted: Are those the new Nike kits Rafa and Serena will be wearing later this week?

fashion: more loud prints from vania king

March 25, 2008

Vania King - Indian Wells 2008

American Vania King follows up her loud stripes from Indian Wells with this lighter floral pattern for this week’s Sony Ericsson Open in Key Biscayne, Fla. It’s possibly another dress from Lily’s of Beverly Hills.

Edit: Nope — a quick call to the LBH confirms that this is not their dress. So if anyone knows the answer…

Scoreline: Vania is through to the third round of qualifying. Good luck to her!

andy parties for lacoste’s 75th birthday

March 25, 2008

I hope the pro-bedhead camp didn’t lose too much sleep over this prim and proper photo of Andy Roddick posing in Lacoste‘s latest spring/summer collection, because he took it down a notch at last night’s signing at the Bloomingdale’s flagship in Manhattan.

Andy paired the collection’s signature white sports coat with some blue jeans, and even lets his chest do a peekaboo.

Monica Seles - Dancing with the Stars Night 2

Monica Seles and partner Jonathan Roberts mambo their way to 15 points (that’s five from each judge) at last night’s Dancing with the Stars. This was the same score she got dancing the foxtrot last week. Read a recap here.

The show’ll start eliminating couples beginning Tuesday night.

on sharapova’s french open dress: the speculation continues…

March 24, 2008

nike-dress-paris08.jpg

One more to throw into the fray for Maria Sharapova‘s possible French Open kit. Rich at Down the Line! scoured the Nike site and came up with this beauty.

While the dress has no athlete linked to its description, this dark blue number is definitely a candidate for Masha’s outfit (unlike the Paris Tank and Skirt, which were linked to Masha). Judging by the bow on the bust, we know it’s definitely not Serena‘s. And Maria has gone both light (pink tutu, 2006) and dark (last year’s dark blue layers) in French Opens past, so who knows which way she’ll go this year?

Buy: Nike Paris Tennis Dress, Dark Obsidian/Chalk, $100. By the way, the Doubles Dress, in a Chalk/Dark Obsidian colorway, is also a fave of mine. It has a thin belt and a ruffled hem. $75.

thumbs up: roddick parts his hair for lacoste’s spring/summer ’08

Andy Roddick - Lacoste - Spring/Summer 2008

Where’s the bedhead? We didn’t think it was possible, but Andy Roddick can actually clean up (pretty well, even) wearing clothes from his sponsor, Lacoste. These classic whites are from the label’s spring/summer collection. We were in love with the white jacket back when creative designer Christopher Lemaire presented the goods back in September, and our feelings haven’t changed. Big logos are on their way out, but I’m not above squeezing one more summer out of it. (Who’s with me?)

Refresher: If you want to take a gander at the collection, click here. If you’re ready to buy, click here.

trophy watch: one of the year’s best trophies gets doled out yet again

March 24, 2008

Ana Ivanovic - Indian Wells 2008Ana Ivanovic - Indian Wells 2008

Ana Ivanovic made quick work of Svetlana Kuznetsova in their final match at Indian Wells. (The scoreline: 6-4, 6-3.) Ana took home the $332,000 purse, a bracelet from Jeffrey Scott Fine Magnetics, and that cute humpback whale trophy. Kuznetsova, meanwhile, took home $163,000.

Novak Djokovic - Indian Wells 2008Novak Djokovic - Indian Wells 2008

Novak Djokovic proved that he’s currently the best men’s tennis player in the world by taking his first Indian Wells title. He beat the en fuego Mardy Fish who, before Sunday, had beaten Roger Federer, David Nalbandian, Lleyton Hewitt, and Nikolay Davydenko in this tournament.

There were a few close calls (and Nole started to self-destruct), but the Serb pulled it together in the end for a 6-2, 5-7, 6-3 win. Props to Mardy for a good two weeks. I can live without his basketball shorts, though. Also: cover your ankles, and stop shaving your legs!

Novak Djokovic - Indian Wells 2008Novak Djokovic - Indian Wells 2008

Nole took home a $555,000 paycheck while Mardy raked in $277,500.

Their humps: “The Pacific Promise” Perpetual Trophy is 30 inches tall. It’s a replica of an 18-foot sculpture of a mother humpback whale and her calf. The original resides in Pacific Life’s main office in Newport Beach, Calif. The sculpture was created by artist Randy Puckett, who’s known for his whale work.

sightings: anna kournikova at the sunrise tourney

March 24, 2008

Anna Kournikova - BMW Tennis Championships 2008

Anna Kournikova, spotted on the grounds of the BMW Tennis Championships in Sunrise, Fla.

Speaking of Anna, I think the new K-Swiss casual line — the same ones being sold at the pop-up store in Santa Monica — is also available at CO-OP (The Grove). So those who fear the water or anything west of La Cienega can still look fabulous. (I’ve been trying to find pictures of the clothing online (to no avail). I’m going to visit the store soon and let you know if I find anything to upload.)

a world outside of indian wells

March 24, 2008

Chopped liver? Leave it to ZooTennis to remind us that there is a world outside of Indian Wells in early March. For instance, the early round men’s losers at the season’s first combined event had a chance to redeem themselves at the BMW Tennis Championships in Sunrise, Fla.

On the list: Kei Nishikori, Jarko Nieminen, Sebastien Grosjean, Gilles Simon, Potito Starace, Michael Llodra, Andreas Seppi, Nicolas Mahut, Janko Tipsarevic, Marin Cilic, Nicolas Kiefer, Marc Gicquel, Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, Vince Spadea, and Jurgen Melzer.

Robin Haase - Sebastien Grosjean - BMW Tennis Championships 2008

In singles, Robin Haase defeated Grosjean 5-7, 7-5, 6-1.

Janko Tipsarevic - Dusan Vemic - BMW Tennis Championships 2008

And in doubles, Janko and Desan Vemic beat Kristof Vliegen and Peter Wessels 6-2, 7-6 (5).

Scorelines: See all the results here.

More pictures! Janko (in sleeveless Fila), Jurgen Melzer, Jarko Nieminen, and Fernando Gonzalez after the cut…

maria sharapova’s latest tag heuer shoot

March 24, 2008

>Maria Sharapova - Tag Heuer shoot

TSF ran across these stills from an upcoming Tag Heuer ad campaign with Maria Sharapova. Not sure when the photos were taken, but you can bet that they were shot in the last three months (when Masha adopted bangs).

mardy goes gangsta

March 23, 2008

In this world of customization — gold tennis racquets, tuxedos, monograms — it only makes sense when players create their own post-match victory rituals. There’s the Youzhny salute, the Agassi/Srichaphan bow, the Venus twirl, and the Petr Korda scissor kick (good riddance!).

Mardy Fish - Indian Wells 2008

Mardy Fish gives us his own with this adorable “hug” to each side of the stands at Court 1 of the Indian Wells Tennis Garden. I’m sure he appreciated the crowd’s support in his 6-3, 6-2 win (his serve never got broken!) over Roger Federer.

Gwen Stefani - Mary Joe Fernandez - Indian Wells 2008

Gwen Stefani was on hand at yesterday’s men’s semifinal match between her besty Roger Federer and American Mardy Fish. The World No. 1 was upset 6-3, 6-2 in what looked like an uninspired performance. This isn’t to take away from Fish (whose backhand Justin Gimelstob kept “lauding”, by the way) — I’d never seen a one-handed backhand picked on so much since Davenport took out Steffi Graf in that ’99 Wimbledon final!

In case you didn’t know: Mary Joe Fernandez is married to Tony Godsick, who is Roger’s agent.

Spotted, but not photographed: Will Ferrell.

sharapova drops out of miami; nike previews her french open look

March 22, 2008

It’s official: Maria Sharapova has dropped out of next week’s Sony Ericsson Open in Key Biscayne, Fla.

“I’ve been playing a lot of tennis, flying a lot, and it’s all been work since I took a week off after the championships,” she told reporters. “It’s pretty much been nonstop from the season to all the tournaments I’ve been playing, and Fed Cup as well. It takes a toll on your body and your mind. You feel like you have to go out on the court and, you know, spend a lot of emotion and energy out there, and sometimes you just don’t have it for every match.”

She also mentioned wondering why she would be tired this early in the season (if it’s not mono, then it’s probably all that jetsetting, dear). Of course, money is of no concern vs. taking care of her body, so Sharapova will pony up the stiff fine that goes along with skipping this mandatory SEWTA tournament.

What she’ll likely wear in Paris: We at TSF are sad to hear about Sharapova’s withdrawal, especially since it might have been a chance for Nike to unveil a new outfit for the Siberian Siren. In the meantime, we’ll feast our eyes on what will likely be her outfit for the 2008 French Open. See the pictures after the cut…

fashion focus: it’s in the details

March 22, 2008

Now that there are only seven folks left standing in Indian Wells (both men’s semis still to be contested, plus one semi between Jelena Jankovic and Ana Ivanovic, the winner whom will face Sveta Kuznetsova in the finals), it’s time to look back at some fun fashion from the tournament.

Dmitry Tursunov - Indian Wells 2008

ATP vlogger Dmitry Tursunov wore this textured white Fila cap during his match against Juan Ignacio Chela.

Donald Young - Indian Wells 2008

I saw the bracelets on Donald Young up close during a hitting session last weekend, and I’m glad there was a photographer who picked it up. Here he is in a match against Rafael Nadal.

Galina Voskoboeva - Indian Wells 2008

Galina Voskoboeva fell to Vera Zvonareva in the third round, but not before taking out 22nd seed Michaella Krajicek in the round prior. Nice smiley face dampener, and look at the floral pattern on that hem!
