fashion focus: nike digs into adidas archives for maria’s wimbledon kit

June 22, 2008

Maria Sharapova recently confirmed that she’ll mix up her Grand Slam outfits at this year’s Wimbledon by wearing shorts; she has so far only worn dresses to these big events.

The sleeveless pleated tuxedo top and the tailored shorts are perfect for the most formal of the Grand Slams, but we’re a little disappointed that this looks like Maria Kirilenko‘s 2007 outfit: the tuxedo shirt dress from adidas by Stella McCartney.

What do you think of Sharapova’s kit?

roger federer’s all-white attire

June 22, 2008

We’re very much looking forward to what Nike has in store for Roger Federer at this year’s Wimbledon. The pictures are out (see above), but they always leave some details to the very last second.

Roger will likely wear the white bandana (with gold swoosh) that he’s worn during practice, plus the white double wristband (with black stripes). What we still don’t know is what color the swoosh will be on his monogrammed Control Polo and Control Shorts.

fashion focus: venus takes control of her wimbledon destiny

June 22, 2008

Venus Williams will step onto Centre Court wearing an EleVen dress of her own design. Not a bad way to defend a Wimbledon title, no? (Alas, no more Reebok hot pants!)

Venus’ design stays with a simple silhouette but shows sophistication with the gathered fabric on its v-strap.

The dress will be included in a new selection of EleVen pieces that will drop at Steve & Barry’s stores in July.

stateside strawberries and cream

June 22, 2008

In an effort to get buzz going for Wimbledon, tourney sponsor HSBC got Monica Seles and Jim Courier playing mini-matches in front of four of the bank’s locations in Manhattan this past Thursday. Justin Gimelstob refereed the matches, which were played on a portable green (astroturf?) court.

If you’re in New York for the next two weeks, HSBC will have Strawberries and Cream carts in front of many of their branches, where trained staff (in traditional Wimbledon attire, of course) will serve the dessert to passers-by.

and so it begins: roger federer’s wimbledon shoes

June 22, 2008

It really warms my cockles that the sports photographers are now in on making sure that Roger Federer‘s ornate Nike kits get documented for posterity.

In this year’s version, they go with a white/gold colorway for his Vapors. The “5” on the back of his right shoe stands for the number of times he’s won Wimbledon. The left shoe will feature his “RF” logo, also in gold.
