andy murray’s backhand saves the day

June 28, 2008

12th seed and hometown hope Andy Murray exacted revenge over Tommy Haas for a loss at Indian Wells by beating the German 6-4, 6-7 (4-7), 6-3, 6-2 in the third round of Wimbledon. As expected (and we were entertained!), Andy’s backhand produced some wonderful winners and passing shots throughout the match.

Thanks to San Diegan (and TSF reader) Matt Coin for snapping these two early-round photos of Mr. Haas at Wimbledon. His glory days are way past him (with that nagging shoulder injury of his), but his abs are very much alive and well.

Buy: Tommy wears the K-Swiss Ultracel Polo, $52.

Andy wears the Fred Perry Wimbledon T-Shirt (£35, fredperry.com) and the Retro Bag in Rover Brown (£45, fredperry.com).

tattoo watch: timea bacsinszky

June 28, 2008

Thanks to everyone for clearing up the tattoo confusion for me. This tattoo, mistakenly attributed to Maria Sharapova, is actually that of Switzerland’s Timea Bacsinszky. She lost 6-4, 3-6, 3-6 to fifth seed Elena Dementieva.

Could he really do it?

Butter’s Bubble

Marat Safin won his 3rd round Wimbledon match against Andreas Seppi, 7-6, 3-6 ,6-7, 6-4. Is it still shocking that he won another match? It’s so hard to feel confident to watch him play these days.

If Safin could escape another match, he could face Marcos Baghdatis or Feliciano Lopez! The latter ousted Marat during their 3rd round match in Wimbledon back in 2005.

Remember this? lol….

Mario Ancic and Roger Federer are also in the same section of the draw as Marat, so he’ll need all the luck he can get. As much as I love to see Marat go deep into the tournament, I have to be realistic. His chances are kinda slim.

eleVen spreads its wings

June 28, 2008

Venus Williams must be getting excited that her clothing line, EleVen is finally catching on. Russian Nadia Petrova, who is no longer with French company Airness, is through to the fourth round of these Championships wearing EleVen whites. The press asked Venus for comment after her first round match.

Q. You brought out a new clothes line here, but you have Petrova wearing your clothes, right?
VW: Uh-huh.

Q. Is that the first time you’ve had another player wearing your clothes? Talk about how you worked that out with her.
VW: I think she’s just in transition between — was in transition, so she I think wanted — she was doing me a favor. So I’m hoping to see her in the clothes. I saw her in some warmups yesterday, but I haven’t seen her in the match clothes. I’m hoping to see her. She’s a great girl. I have a lot of respect for her on and off the court. She’s a good person.

Scoreline: 21st seed Petrova upset the 16th seed Victoria Azarenka to reach the fourth round of Wimbledon. There she will face either Shuai Peng or the Sharapova-thrashing Alla Kudryavtseva.
