(OT) get a whiff of wiffle gear from no mas

June 24, 2010

Every sport needs its uniform, and wiffle ball is no exception. No Mas has restocked its line of Wiffle tees and come out with a pair of ten-ball shorts and three snap back hats (made in conjuction with Starter) — all to get you properly outfitted for some perforated plastic ball fun.

In case you need swayin’ you can enter the code “WIFFLE” at checkout to get 25% off on the goods. You’re welcome!

so much for being tamarine tanasugarn II

June 24, 2010

Another early exit at Wimbledon for 2008 semifinalist Zheng Jie, who followed last year’s early loss to Dani Hantuchova with a 4-6, 6-2, 2-6 performance against Petra Kvitova in the second round of the 2010 tournament. Ever since her run to the semis in Melbourne this year (save for an uptick at Warsaw, where she got to the final), Zheng’s been sputtering. What gives?

ANTA scales back: Unlike all the crazy — dare we say gratuitous — use of fabric at this year’s draw, the normally ruffled Zheng went for a simple look, even down to her puffed-sleeve warm-up.

Draw: Kvitova next plays Azarenka. Both are in the top half of the draw with Serena.

wimbledon gets catty in the queue

June 24, 2010

Wimbledon.org, the official web site of The Championships, got a little catty with its queue fashion video – and we love it! The vid itself, which looks to be sponsored by Evian features a fashion-savvy London lady critiquing (in secret) the fashion choices of the queuers. We LOVE this idea! Too bad she mostly stuck to the gals…

See the video by clicking here. Scroll two thirds down the page to find it. And, go to page 2 of the Wimby videos to find an equally-entertaining fan hat video. Lovely, just lovely!

tennis’ reception line for queen elizabeth II

June 24, 2010

…And ‘Best Dressed’ goes to: Perhaps it’s the American in us, but we were all about Andy Roddick and his wearing a white blazer to meet Queen Elizabeth II at Day 4 of the 2010 Wimbledon tournament. (The tailored Federer suit is so predictable!) QEII attended the day’s session to watch Andy Murray play his second-round match against Jarrko Nieminen.

Roddick and his jacket (we can only assume it’s Lacoste) was part of a reception line which included Martina Navratilova, Billie Jean King, Elena Baltacha, Anne Keothavong, Laura Robson, Jelena Jankovic, Novak Djokovic, Caroline Wozniacki Kai-Chen Chang, Roger Federer, and Serena Williams (who’d been practicing her moves in anticipation of this meeting!).

As Nick said earlier, Her Majesty wore the perfect color to complement the bright green grass of the AELTC. It’s a boost to the sport to see her around these parts.

Was out at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center today in Queens, New York, and snapped this phone shot of an empty grounds. Weird sight. Two months!!

thanks, john and nicolas!

June 24, 2010

Wimbledon 2010, 1st round. John Isner d. Nicolas Mahut 6-4, 3-6, 6-7 (7), 7-6 (3), 70-68.

Everything’s already been said about this match; every emotion, expressed; every statistic, calculated and printed.

So all I will say is: Thanks, Isner and Mahut, for showing the world that tennis is a noble sport where guys will fight to the finish. Much like what that marathon final between Nadal and Federer did for our sport, your epic fifth set has become water cooler talk even for folks who have no interest in tennis.

Draw: Up next for John is Thiemo De Bakker.

queen rocks the aqua at the aeltc

June 24, 2010

All whites? Not for this dame. The Queen is at Wimbledon today and she is rocking the aqua dress, complete with black handbag and matching shoes. The white gloves and SW19-inspired flower bouquet. Great shots of her visit on the Daily Mail’s web site. (photo by getty images via the daily mail)
