wimbledon gets into the olympic spirit

by

Saw this bit come through the wires about the AELTC suspending its all-white dress code when it hosts the tennis portion of the 2012 Olympics, in London.

From the club’s head honcho, Ian Ritchie: “We have been very supportive to the Olympic organizers throughout the process… We hope to some extent there will be a different type of audience. It is not a repeat of the Championships. It will be its own competition, have its own style and it will play out in its own way.”

Perhaps they’re just trying to give everything over to the Olympics organizers so they won’t be blamed if anything goes wrong. (We also saw this post over at BBC about the possibility of the Wimbledon’s usual food offerings — Pimms, strawberries and cream, etc. — not being available at the Coca-Cola- and McDonald’s-sponsored event.)

On the flipside, we’re happy for the prospect of having folks who don’t usually get into the AELTC have an opportunity to do so with this equally grand tournament. And while we’re disappointed about the dress code (what is this, Queen’s Club??), we take consolation in knowing that many of the clothing companies, like they do for the Davis and Fed Cups, will probably dress their players in country colors.
