sightings in the stands: serena williams

September 10, 2010

Serena Williams came out to support her sister Venus‘ during her 2010 US Open run, including today’s semifinal battle against Kim Clijsters. Serena’s actually been around for a few rounds, bum foot (feet? sole? heel? face?) be damned.

Draw: Venus lost to Clijsters today in a match that lasted almost 2.5 hours. The final score: 4-6, 7-6 (2), 6-4. She’ll meet Vera Zvonareva in the final; the Russian upset top seed Caroline Wozniacki 6-4, 6-3 in the other semi. (Draw: Women’s Singles)

2010 us open ballperson’s polo

September 10, 2010

The ponies on the back of those Polo Ralph Lauren ballpersons’ uniforms continue to stay big and bold, with the difference for the 2010 US Open version being the yellow logo (vs. white). We here at TSF hoped that Nick would end up with the polo — since he tried out for a ballperson slot at this year’s tourney — but it’s a rigorous audition. You could sooner get a spot guest judging the Project Runway finale than you could being Roger‘s and Rafa‘s ball bitch.

Buy: US Open Custom-Fit Polo, $98, ralphlauren.com.

with djokovic, sergio tacchini launches fall/winter 2010

September 10, 2010

Sergio Tacchini‘s getting ready to launch an online store plastered with Nole Djokovic all over. They’ve provided four photos as a teaser for the Fall/Winter 2010 collection.

Draw: At the 2010 US Open, Nole’s still in the running to match his 2007 finals appearance but will need a Hail Mary to do so. His semifinal opponent, Roger Federer, has taken him out at this tournament in the last three years. On Djokovic’s side, perhaps, is the fact that he hasn’t dropped a set since going five against Troicki in the first round. Nole’s other opponents: Monfils (QF), Fish (R16), Blake (3r), and Petzschner (2r). See the men’s singles draw here.

oh, mirka!

September 10, 2010

Here’s Mirka Federer sitting with Gwen Stefani while watching hubby the fourth round between her hubby Roger and TSF bathroom buddy (and bartender!) Jurgen Melzer. Gwen looks fab as always, with the houndstooth pants and those lime green nails (which match Caro‘s adidas by Stella McCartney dress!).

Fashion Week: For those interested, L.A.M.B. will be presenting its Spring/Sumer 2011 collection on Sept. 16 as part of New York Fashion Week. View the full schedule here.

aga’s trick shot (and this one’s for real)

September 10, 2010

Remember that Roger Federer trick shot (no, not that one) where he’s goofing off in between takes for a Gillette commercial? In case you’re still wondering, it was, uhm, digitally enhanced.

If you want to see what tennis players can actually do with a tennis ball, see this video shot by the WTA with Agnieszka Radwanksa on a windy day in Montreal (for the Rogers Cup).

Draw: At the US Open, the ninth-seeded Aga lost to Shuai Peng in the second round. Meanwhile, Bepa’s up a set against Caro in the semifinals. We’re gunning for Wozniacki on this one…

with tennis on our minds, is it time to dump tennis channel?

September 10, 2010

NYTimes.com’s DealBook blog reminds us that Tennis Channel’s been around for seven years now, and that the network’s investors are probably itching to get a return on their money.

From the post:

“The Tennis Channel’s owners have controlled the business now for seven years, a long slog for a private-equity investment. With the network improving its fortunes over the past few years and achieving viability as an independent cable channel, the investors could be looking to exit in the near term, say several people familiar with the deal.

Potential buyers include a large media company with an existing portfolio of cable assets (Comcast, Cox or Viacom); a talent agency (CAA or IMG); or to a new set of private-equity owners (Blackstone and Bain, for instance, own the Weather Channel).”

Now that TC’s finagled its share of Slam coverage, let’s hope they can get themselves a good deal. Life wouldn’t be the same without Bag Check!
