happy birthday, nick

September 16, 2010

TSF wishes our co-editor, Nick McCarvel a very happy birthday. (From the looks of this pic, he’s already started the party!)

Make sure to send him love (or at least add him) on Twitter: @nmccarves.

feeling stuffy?

September 16, 2010

It’s a little beyond me why athletes like Eli Manning, Apolo Ohno, Shaq and Venus are part of endorsements deals like the ad campaign for Nabisco’s Oreo cookies. Laundry detergent? OK. Watches? Sure. Deodorant? Fine.

But for these athletes who pride themselves on being healthy, active individuals, why a cookie that’s made up of pure sugar? And to boot, this commercial is dismal. I don’t quite understand the Team DSRL angle, but it looks like they’re encouraging the youngsters to be somewhat active? If so, kudos.

Oh, and Oreo: ‘stuff’ is spelled with two Fs, FYI. Just putting it out there.

do not sit idly, berdych

September 16, 2010

It looks like the Serbians really want to get to the Davis Cup final. As if having 2010 US Open finalist Novak Djokovic on their roster isn’t enough, they brought the Langoliers along to nip at the Czech team’s heels.

Tie: Most of the Belgrade Arena (capacity: 16,842) will probably root for the home team. Nole and Radek Stepanek are up first; Janko Tipsarevic and Tomas Berdych will follow. Nenad Zimonjic and Viktor Troicki will play Jan Hajek and Ivo Minar in the doubles rubber, and the singles players will switch opponents. More info here.

nyfw s/s ’11: what we’ve liked so far

September 16, 2010

Last day of Spring/Summer 2011 NY Fashion Week is today. Aside from our separate post on Rodarte and one coming up on Lacoste (Lemaire‘s last!), here’s a list of which collections we’ve eyed so far: (more…)

tattoo watch: andreas haider-maurer

September 16, 2010

Austria’s Andreas Haider-Maurer lost the first rubber against Israel’s Dudi Sela at this weekend’s Davis Cup World Group Play-offs (in Tel Aviv). The scoreline: 6-4, 6-1, 6-3. Last month, Haider qualified for the 2010 US Open Main Draw on his first try; he lost to Robin Soderling in the first round. Not sure what that tattoo is… possibly a bible verse?

Even: Jurgen Melzer beat Harel Levy to put the tie at 1-1. See all the stats here.

Update: That tattoo isn’t a bible verse… Andreas’ camp tells us that this (6:55) is the exact time of his birth.

in kazakhstan, the world’s largest tent

September 16, 2010

And we’re not talking about Evgeny Korolev‘s pants. The draw ceremony for weekend’s Davis Cup World Group Play-off tie between Kazakhstan and Switzerland was held at the Norman Foster-designed Khan Shatyr Entertainment Center in Astana. The structure, which opened this past July, is the world’s largest tent. (Read: HuffPo’s write-up.) The matches will be played in the National Tennis Center, also located in that city.

Draw: See the country line-ups here. (Marco Chiudinelli is playing!)
