flashback: allez, aravane

September 21, 2010

TSF was banking on Aravane Rezai to join the ranks of Nadia Petrova and Bethanie Mattek-Sands in the fashion trenches of Flushing Meadows, but the Frenchwoman instead kept with the same white armadillo Scheyda dress she’d been wearing since the start of the grasscourt season.

Still, her spirit found a way to make a mark: as we roamed the grounds of the 2010 US Open, we ran across this man who’d designed his own Rezai tee. It’s not quite the impressive as Nole fan shirts, but “A” for effort.

Meanwhile, just for posterity, here’s Rezai playing against American (and wildcard) Beatrice Capra in the second round. Capra won (the hearts of internet users, even) but got a massive spanking from Maria Sharapova in the round after.

filippo volandri: back to tennis (b)asics

September 21, 2010

Filippo Volandri‘s playing at this week’s BCR Open Romania in Bucharest. He’s through to the second round after beating Lukasz Kubot 6-3, 6-0. (Draw: BCR Open Romania site)

Meanwhile, it’s sad to see one of the more stylish Italians (he used to wear EA7 — that’s Armani sportswear — on the court) now dressed in Asics.

andy and kim at the burberry s/s ’11 show in london

September 21, 2010

Andy Murray, with gf Kim Sears, at the Burberry Prorsum show today at London Fashion week. (Serena was there, too.) Trench coats in python, studded, etc. Dee-lish! We’ll link to the pics from the show as soon as they’re up.

juniors do college(wear)

September 21, 2010

Just like we wouldn’t expect our kids to go straight to the pros, we’re not expecting our kids to know the difference between Rocha and Rochas just like that. Get their fashion knowledge rolling with Fred Perry‘s designer offerings for tots. The collection’ll give them a smoother transition into shopping wisely once they hit the big leagues. Our fave: this college tipped cardigan, £45. Rest of the goods are here.

flashback: nads, never again.

September 20, 2010

Not that we really wanted to go back to that bad place, but out of obligation to all that is right and just in this world, we figured that this 2010 US Open outfit, brought to you by Nadia Petrova and Ellesse, deserved its own blog post. Just so we never forget.

And not that we expected anything less from Ellesse as they continue to dress Nads in the wackiest s*&$ out there, but this one, so far, takes the cake. (Yep, the one-upped themselves after this — Nads’ dress from New Haven!)

And German Andrea Petkovic was clearly moved by all of it, putting the 17th seed Petrova out of her misery (Kudryavtseva-style) by winning the third set in a tiebreak. Petkovic made it all the way to the round of 16 (with the help of a walkover from Peng Shuai) before falling to eventual finalist Vera Zvonareva.

flashback: wilson’s simple, solid dress for the open

September 20, 2010

As we mentioned while roaming the grounds of the 2010 US Open, the normally blah Wilson surprised us with a solid black and pink dress (with a wrap skirt) to put on Anne Keothavong and Mandy Minella. Note the ruching on the bust and the pleats on the back of the skirt.

Minella, who came through from qualifying, made it all the way to the third round before falling to Venus Williams. The lady from Luxembourg paired her dress with some purple hot pants (and pearl studs). Meanwhile, Keothavong lost her first round match against Taiwan’s Yung-Jan Chan.

This whole line created for the 2010 US Open is actually good all-around. Even the branding’s novel, with very NY-centric names like the “#7 Train tank” and the “7th Ave. top” for these black and pink (“berry”) pieces. Lots of gathering and ruching detail. Check out the links below.

Buy: Wilson Tea Lawn Tennis Dress, black/berry, $52.99; Fall 7th Ave. 3/4 Pant, $39.99; Garden V-Neck Top, $36.99; 7th Ave. Long-Sleeve Top, $39.99; #7 Train Tank, $36.99; all at TW.

nyfw s/s ’11: lemaire’s last for lacoste

September 20, 2010

Christophe Lemaire‘s final collection for Lacoste showed in New York last week, a mix of the sportswear we’ve come to enjoy from the brand’s archives — Lemaire’s take, of course — but with a little more infusion of the Frenchman’s own eastern aesthetic. The show started with whites and blacks in concentric squares and other geometric patterns. He then mixed it up with oranges and browns, and then switched to greys to end the presentation.

As we’d mentioned before, Lemaire is taking over at Hermes; his first show for that label will be in March 2011.

robredo in erke (two more)

September 20, 2010

Thanks to reader Tahoe Editor for pointing out that Tommy Robredo did whip out two more Erke shirts at the 2010 US Open: a blue polo with white dots along the chest, and a black version of the white/green polo he wore in the first round.

flashback: robredo and wickmayer in erke at the 2010 us open

September 19, 2010

Tommy Robredo continued his round-robin of clothing sponsors, this time landing on Erke as played in the 2010 US Open. The Spaniard made it all the way to the Round of 16 (courtesy of retirements by Julien Benneteau and Michael Llodra before falling to Mikhail Youzhny.

Robredo wore LoS (Label of Sportswear) for a little while this year, and was in Tacchini before that. Robredo switched to LoS around the time Nole switched to Tacchini from adidas.

And on the women’s side, 15th seed Yanina Wickmayer also made it through to the fourth round before getting upset by Kaia Kanepi. Note the white layered skirt, the keyhole on the back of her pink tank (the same color trim is on her shoes).

More: We took a few more pictures of both players; see ‘em after the cut…

flashback: wilson’s 2010 us open tees

September 19, 2010

For those keeping track, here are the tees that Wilson sold at their shops on the grounds of the 2010 US Open. (The ones at the Nike booth are here.)

flashback: tennis channel us open 2010 ad

September 19, 2010

Aside from the USTA‘s “It Must Be Love” campaign, which came back for a sophomore turn at this year’s US Open — and Melanie Oudin‘s perfect execution of a wince for these Virgin Mobile advertisements — the one promo that kept catching our eye was Tennis Channel’s ads. We snapped this one near Times Square.

flashback: yonex at the 2010 us open

September 19, 2010

Elena Dementieva was the 12th seed at the 2010 US Open and made it to the fourth round before falling to Sam Stosur in a third-set tiebreak. Elena’s still rusty after that calf injury that kept her out of commission for two months.

She and fellow Yonex-er (and fellow Elena) Elena Baltacha wore the company’s New York Dress, with gold piping across the upper chest, a wrap skirt, and an embossed plaid design on the fabric (loves!).

And Baltacha lost in the second round to 27th seed Petra Kvitova 6-7 (5), 3-6.

Buy: Yonex Women’s 2010 New York Dress, Red/White/Gold and Black/White/Gold, $69, TW.

On the men’s side, Lleyton Hewitt nabbed the last seeded spot but fell in the first round to Paul-Henri Mathieu 3-6, 4-6, 7-5, 6-4, 1-6. And David Nalbandian, as the 31st seed, made it to the third round before falling to Verdasco 2-6, 6-3, 3-6, 2-6. Both Hewitt and Nalbandian wore the same kit.

davis cup: colombian color coordination

September 19, 2010

Babolat and Li Ning did a wonderful job bringing together the Colombian Davis Cup as they host the USA at the World Group Play-offs this weekend in Bogota. Santiago Giraldo defeated Sam Querrey 6-2, 6-4, 7-5, in the second rubber and is now serving at 6-5 in the fifth set against Mardy Fish. (The Americans are up 2-1, so Giraldo needs a win to give Colombia a chance to advance.)

More: All the tie info available here.

Yellow, red, and blue: See another shot of Santiago’s crew (Babolat) and doubles player Carlos Salamanca in Li Ning after the cut…

stepanek couldn’t step it up

September 19, 2010

Even with a tired Novak Djokovic anchoring the Serbs, Czech workhorse Radek Stepanek couldn’t continue his winning ways at the Belgrade Arena for this weekend’s Davis Cup semifinal tie, losing the fifth rubber against Serbia’s Janko Tipsarevic 6-0, 7-6 (6), 6-4.

Serbia’s 3-2 victory will pit them against France in the finals this December (likely to be played on French soil).

More: See all the tie details here.

Radek’s rags: Meanwhile, check out Stepanek’s Alea kits — a polo with graphics (vintage Radek) for his singles rubbers and a more muted version for his doubles match with Tomas Berdych — all after the cut…

playing catch-up

September 18, 2010

There was so much to do and take in while we were out in NYC for the US Open. And couple that with our day job, it was really hard to get all the material up and on the blog before the tournament was over (and already there’s Davis Cup stuff to cover!)

So I’ll be putting up a few “flashback” posts that’ll cover the clothes/gear from the year’s final major. In case you’re ready to just look forward, I’ll be marking them in the title so you can just skip over.

I’m off to my friend Robert’s to soak in some sun (poolside!) before summer disappears. In the meantime. I’ll leave you with this fun Levi’s billboard that was up near Lafayette and Houston. There are moving parts!

shirtless + tattoo watch: horacio zeballos

September 18, 2010

Argentine Horacio Zeballos and doubles partner Eduardo Schwank couldn’t overcome the team of Michael Llodra and Arnaud Clement at the Davis Cup semifinals in Lyon. Their decisive rubber, which Llodra and Clement won 6-4, 7-5, 6-3, sends France to their first Fed Cup final since 2002. We didn’t include it in our Fila Davis Cup post, but Zeballos wore a country-appropriate white polo with blue and yellow trim. (More: Read up on the tie details here.)

Meanwhile, we caught a little bit of Zeballos’ shirtless practice time on the Sunday before the 2010 US Open. He lost in the first round to Igor Andreev.

Tattoo watch: Looks like he has the Eye of Horus on his right shoulder.

loup’s fall offerings

September 18, 2010

All of Loup‘s fall goods will be showing up on the site by next week, so make sure to give it a look! They’ve added some shades of grey and black along with some fun outerwear, including the Sweatshirt Jacket (left) and the Ruffle Sweatshirt (right). Could Erwin get away with wearing the ruffled one in a large? Hmm…

nice shoes, lleyton

September 18, 2010

Lleyton Hewitt‘s dreams of bagging another Grand Slam might be long gone, but he can still put out a good Davis Cup show. He won the first rubber in this weekend’s World Group play-off against Belgium and also teamed up with Paul Hanley for the doubles win. The Aussies are now up 2-1; up next is Lleyton vs. Olivier Rochus. More info here.

Love that his Yonex shoes coordinated with the rest of his Davis Cup uniform. More pics after the cut…

davis cup daddies

September 17, 2010

Who’s on your list?

Guy Forget, for France, heading the team against Argentina for a spot in the Davis Cup finals.

Patrik Kühnen, for Germany, coaching the guys as they play on home soil (Stuttgart) against the South Africans.

Patrick McEnroe, for the US, making sure the Americans fare well against Colombia.
