olympics: nike in red, white, and blue

August 11, 2008

TSF’s sad that we won’t get to see Maria Sharapova in her kit for the Beijing Olympics. So we’ll have to do with what we’re given:

Serena Williams wears a patriotic version of the Doubles Dress that she debuted earlier this year. In her first Olympics singles match ever (she won gold in doubles with Venus in 2000), she took out Olga Govortsova of Belarus 6-3, 6-1.

Zheng Jie took advantage of playing on her home court in her win over Hungarian Agnes Szavay.

Notice the ghosted pattern on the back panel of the top. (Thanks for a reader’s help with this one.)

Slovakian Daniela Hantuchova brushed aside veteran Ai Sugiyama 6-2 7-5.

reebok’s summer/fall shimmer dress

August 6, 2008

It’s funny how Reebok steps it up after letting the fashion-forward Venus Williams out to make her own clothing line… They trade in the aqua from Wimbledon with some red for the North American summer.

Soon-to-be No. 1 (ouch) Jelena Jankovic switched to the pink version of the Fall KFS Shimmer dress for her quarterfinal run at the Rogers Cup in Montreal.

And Shahar Peer wore the separates (Cutout Tank) during her 2-6, 2-6 loss to Ai Sugiyama, also at the Rogers Cup.

Buy: Fall KFS Shimmer Dress, $49.99; Shimmer Tank, $36.99; Cutout Tank, $36.99. All styles available in Endurance Blue/Caspian Sea, Sassy Pink/Pompous Pink, and White/Endurance Blue.

Trophy Watch: Kolya’s second Masters, Serena defends title

April 9, 2008

He’s not for the birds:
Top Russian Nikolay Davydenko won his second Tennis Masters Series title by handily beating Rafael Nadal 6-4, 6-2 at the 2008 Sony Ericsson Open. This after overcoming Andy Roddick in the semis. Looks like Kolya has finally shaken off the mental insecurities that came with being under investigation for match fixing. Like Mary Carillo said in during CBS‘ coverage of the final, “This is what Davydenko will be known for” even if he’s cleared of allegations. Better leave all that worrying to your lawyers, Nikolay.

prince’s spring lookbook + women’s skivvies get their due

February 26, 2008

I don’t know what’s in the desalinated water this week, but there are waaaaaaaaaay more than the usual number of crotch shots coming out of the wires from last week’s tourney in Doha. First, there was the unfortunate flesh-colored underwear worn by Li Na.

And now here’s Japanese veteran Ai Sugiyama, layering in Prince.

Flip through it: The company’s spring/summer lookbook might not be anything to look at, but it’s at least fun to look through. There are even realistic sound effects for when you flip the pages! Check it out.

trophy watch: cincinnati and toronto

August 19, 2007

Crystal, crystal, and more crystal for this week’s trophies (and for most of the U.S. Open Series so far)…

Roger Federer defeats James Blake in Cincinnati and goes home with the usual Masters Series paperweight/doorstop.

Stat: At 26 years old, Roger is the fifth youngest player to win 50 career singles titles. (Borg set the record at 23 years, 7 months. Jimmy Connors was 4 months older when he got to fifty. John McEnroe and Ivan Lendl were 25 when they won the 50th singles title. And this woman is still single.)

At the Rogers Cup in Toronto, Justine Henin takes the title in two tight sets over Jelena Jankovic in singles and the doubles team of Katarina Srebotnik and Ai Sugiyama beats Cara Black and Liezel Huber.
