filippo volandri: back to tennis (b)asics

September 21, 2010

Filippo Volandri‘s playing at this week’s BCR Open Romania in Bucharest. He’s through to the second round after beating Lukasz Kubot 6-3, 6-0. (Draw: BCR Open Romania site)

Meanwhile, it’s sad to see one of the more stylish Italians (he used to wear EA7 — that’s Armani sportswear — on the court) now dressed in Asics.

strawberries and cream

While there are crazier things going on across la Manche, the ATPers are doing their part to hold up Wimbledon’s end of the fashion bargain. It’s not quite like the noisemakers of years’ past — with Federer et al embroiled in more serious tennis matters (like premature five-setters and faulty knees) — the military jackets and the dress pants were all left at home. Still, others are stepping up to play with the event’s strict, all-white dress code.

Virginie Razzano reaches her second semi of 2009 by upsetting fifth seed Vera Zvonareva 7-6 (7), 7-5 at the Barclays Dubai Tennis Championships.

Props to the normally utilitarian Asics for spicing up Virginie’s skort with some pleating.

Scoreline: Up next for the frenchwoman is JJ-killer Kaia Kanepi, who beat qualifier Elena Vesnina in another quarter in their half of the draw. The winner will face a Williams sister in the final.
