short balls: the pick comes wednesday

October 26, 2010

On Wednesday afternoon, the USTA will announce at a media luncheon who has been picked to replace Patrick McEnroe as the U.S. Davis Cup coach. McEnroe, who has coached the American squad since 2002, announced at the year’s US Open that he was stepping down from his position as head coach. Jim Courier and Todd Martin, both former players for the Davis Cup red, white and blue made it known almost immediately that they were interested in the spot. Jay Berger, whohas worked as a USTA coach as well as helping out with Davis Cup duties under McEnroe, is also rumored to be in the running.

Pay to know: The career of Lleyton Hewitt might be on the downward spiral, so he and wife Bec Cartwright are making sure to take full (monetary) advantage of the arrival of their third child, a girl. The Hewitts have joined forces with “Text A Star”, a service that allows fans to text a certain number for $2, and the curious fan will be texted back with the name of the little gal. D-Listed took issue with the Hewitts decision to share the information in such a way, crowning the couple their “Dumb Bitches of the Day“. Bundle of joy? Bundle of something…

No bundles of joy: For Ana Ivanovic and golfer Adam Scott, whose split was confirmed last week. Sounds as though the two severed romantic tie in the last few months, which may have helped Ana with her recent resurgence on the WTA Tour. Maybe Ana should monetize her new-found tennis wins with a $2 text service to find out what she ate before each match? Then we could finally get to the bottom of that bathroom problem…

Not enough Muster-d: Luck ran out for Austrian wild card (and former world no. 1) Thomas Muster in the opening round at Vienna today. He was taken down in two (hard-fought) sets against countryman and lucky loser Andreas Haider-Maurer. That didn’t stop Argentinean blog FueBuena to make sure that a Muster reel (from past and present) was up on the blog today, featuring a couple of ’90s gems against Sampras and two great points from his loss today. Keep trucking, Mr. 43!

short(er) balls: The Bryan Brothers put up this video yesterday from a commercial they were supposedly shooting with ESPN. The theme: a 1970s Doublemint gum spin off. Twins abound! | Some fans are really ticked off about the Tennis Channel ticker. Who knew?! Guess they just want their tennis, old-school. | This idea certainly isn’t ‘old school': the iBall. OnTheBaseline talks with two young minds that have an idea on how to change ball technology in the modern game. | This should be bright too: Maria Sharapova’s engagement ring. Sounds like Mr. Sharapova is well-trained when it comes to his lady’s taste for expensive ($250,000!) jewelry. | And really, we’d love to Andrea Petkovic become much more than Petkorazzi. Girl is upbeat and down to earth. Down with the JJ and up with the Petko. Guess we’ll see what happens, no?

oh, mirka!

June 27, 2010

Tennis wives …and girlfriend: As we move into the second week, the roster of glam wives and gfs are still intact, with Mirka Vavrinec, Kim Sears, Bec Hewitt, and Brooklyn Decker rooting for their respective men.

Hewitt still in it: We were convinced that the grueling match between Lleyton Hewitt and Gael Monfils resulted in an upset (yes, we are that cynical), but the 15th-seed (and former champ) won in three sets and will face Nole Djokovic in the fourth round.

Mirka recycles: On Mirka’s an old-school shoulder bag from Louis Vuitton‘s Antigua collection. Husband Federer barely broke a sweat against Nono Clement. He next plays 2010 French Open semifinalist Jurgen Melzer.

Brooklyn relaxes: Mrs. Roddick already has her major title of 2010 in the bag, so now it’s Andy’s turn to produce. He’s up against the sleeper Taiwanese player Yen-Hsun Lu in the round of 16.

Kim steps up: With all eyes on her boyfriend (even the Queen!), Sears has done a good job of mixing up her outfits worn to watch Murray play: off-the-shoulder black for the warm-up against Jan Hajek; a floral print dress for the second round against Nieminen; a big colorful necklace for the third-rounder with Gilles Simon.

Draw: See the 2010 Wimbledon Men’s Singles Draw here.

sightings in the stands: bec cartwright

May 29, 2009

Devoted wife Bec Cartwright showed up to see Lleyton Hewitt crash out of the third round against Rafael Nadal in straight sets: 1-6, 3-6, 1-6.

On track: Up next for Rafa is the winner of the Soderling/Ferrer match. Soderling is currently up a break in the third after splitting the first two sets with Ferrer.

short balls: the hewitts’ marriage on the rocks?, venus and hank engaged! shorts too short? guga to retire!

January 9, 2008

If they can’t join you, beat them: Woman’s Day continues to feed Hewitt-mania even after Bec Cartwright declined to renew her column for the Australian magazine. This week’s cover story: Bec’s marriage meltdown — “Stress, boredom and the loss of a successful, glamorous career have many wondering how long the pair will last…”

Le sad: The Estado de S. Paulo newspaper reports that Guga Kuerten will play his last season in 2008. Tourneys in his schedule include the French Open, the Brasil Open, and the Masters Series Miami. After retirement, perhaps he can devote more time to his clothing line. I want to see them do both the spring/summer and fall/winter shows! (src)

(Too) short shorts?: We bitch when the shorts are too long, and we bitch when the shorts are too short. Let’s make up our minds, shall we?

Planets are aligning: Venus Williams and golfer boyfriend Hank Kuehne are engaged. Mazel tov!

askjdflakjsdf: I’m over it.

For aspiring tennis journos: Blogging has given us a foot in the door, perhaps, but it still doesn’t compare to getting published online or in print. If you’re ready to take that next step, mediabistro’s How To Pitch section recently profiled Tennis magazine’s freelancing opportunities (reg. req’d.). On the fence? The sport doesn’t exactly have the highest Q rating, but sports journalists, as a whole, are very much in demand.

Cayman, the next frontier: The Outback Champions Series continues its expansion outside the U.S. by holding The Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman Championships (April 16-20, 2008). Courier, Arias, and Ferreira have committed to play.

the hewitts expand their reach to fashion, web

January 6, 2008

The Hewitts are smartly using all the eyeballs currently on Australia to spread word about their future off-court ventures.

lleyton hewitt the vicht

First, Lleyton and his camp have trademarked the Aussie’s “C’mon” celebration along with the accompanying cobra-like hand gesture. His manager, David Drysdale, explained the plan: “I think it’s good that he has his own brand and that (the c’mon) is the one thing that’s most synonymous with him.” (The Age) They hope to slap that logo on various kinds of apparel, joining wife Bec, who already has plans to launch a line of children’s clothing.

More on “the vicht”: So it turns out that this on-court gesture is called “the vicht“, invented by Swedish player Niclas Kroon in the late 1980s and popularized by countryman Mats Wilander. The duo owned the rights for almost twenty years until a few months ago, when the trademark lapsed. After being orphaned for a few months, it was snapped up by Hewitt. Now Kroon is crying foul, especially because Kroon himself had planned to launch his own boutique line of vicht clothing at a tennis club in Houston, Tex. Kroon is ultra-pissed — he’s out and Lleyton stands to gain millions — and it showed: the wire story about this feud included a few expletives from the Swede.

There were reports that Wilander was going to talk to Hewitt while they were both at this week’s Adelaide International (Wilander coaches participant Paul-Henri Mathieu, and Hewitt himself is the tourney’s top seed). So far, no one’s written up on it.

(Our buddy Joe’s Stick It Wear?! had a shirt with the vicht on his website, but had taken the style down because of low sales. He probably shouldn’t put it back on…)

An online venture: The two-time Grand Slam champ and his actress wife are also using this time to help launch eSwap.com.au, a swapping and auctioning website with a separate storefront component (basically, a site similar to eBay). He spoke about it here.

Scoreline: Lleyton made it as far as the quarters of the tourney, losing to Jo-Wilfired Tsonga 4-6, 2-6.

hewitts: lleyton and bec just for a sec

September 1, 2007

Too bad Australian hope (and ’01 U.S. Open Champ + ’04 finalist) Lleyton Hewitt crashed out of the secound round last night — I scoffed as Chris called it — because that means we’d have less chances to catch Bec Hewitt in the stands.

(And we weren’t even looking at Lleyton. At least not because of those bowling shirts that Yonex has him wearing.)

Bec wore this jumper top for Lleyton’s first match against Amer Delic, and sealed the deal with some drop earrings from Dior. For round two, she wore a sleeveless bright red tank.

Not sure if his new not-so-tennis-obsessed routine will do Lleyton good at the Grand Slams. He should take the ladies shopping one more time, then go home and think about this straight-set loss to Agustin Calleri.

Bec Hewitt branches out: The stylish wife of Aussie Lleyton Hewitt (and mother to their lovely daughter Mia) takes a stab at children’s fashion by launching her own line, called Bec Kidz. She’ll collaborate with designer Bruno Schiavi on the designs. (Herald Sun via DTL)

Vintage Gucci: Cut out the middleman and get your hands on an old school Gucci tennis bag on eBay. (Racqonteur)

adidas by Stella McCartney: Amid the frenzy of putting together an event to close out London’s next fashion week, Stella McCartney has also released the latest collection for adidas by Stella McCartney. The f/w ’07 colors are Bronco (a pink/brown shade), Dark Bronco, White, and Electricity (lime green).

Picks: I especially love the Track Top (top row, middle), which is basically a crop warm-up; and the Tank (bottom, middle), with it’s “delicate” double-strap detail. Of course, double strap means that it’s going for a layered look without the actual layers…

The Gym Dance collection, another adidas by Stella McCartney line, will make its way to the public soon. Check out High Snobiety’s preview here. (via DTL)

hewitts-july-07.jpg

Bec Hewitt took a break from penning her weekly Woman’s Day column to pose with her family on the cover of a July Women’s Weekly.

It runs alongside a feel-good piece on Lleyton the family man: a loving, caring husband and father (to daughter Mia) — a total antithesis to the fiery tennis player we all know.

Don’t soften up just yet, Lleyton. You’ve got more Grand Slam finals left in you!

March 20, 2007

As you know, the Hewitts have a contract for a weekly column in the Australian Woman’s Day. The March 20 issue had these photos of daughter Mia with Bec.
