short balls: the pick comes wednesday

October 26, 2010

On Wednesday afternoon, the USTA will announce at a media luncheon who has been picked to replace Patrick McEnroe as the U.S. Davis Cup coach. McEnroe, who has coached the American squad since 2002, announced at the year’s US Open that he was stepping down from his position as head coach. Jim Courier and Todd Martin, both former players for the Davis Cup red, white and blue made it known almost immediately that they were interested in the spot. Jay Berger, whohas worked as a USTA coach as well as helping out with Davis Cup duties under McEnroe, is also rumored to be in the running.

Pay to know: The career of Lleyton Hewitt might be on the downward spiral, so he and wife Bec Cartwright are making sure to take full (monetary) advantage of the arrival of their third child, a girl. The Hewitts have joined forces with “Text A Star”, a service that allows fans to text a certain number for $2, and the curious fan will be texted back with the name of the little gal. D-Listed took issue with the Hewitts decision to share the information in such a way, crowning the couple their “Dumb Bitches of the Day“. Bundle of joy? Bundle of something…

No bundles of joy: For Ana Ivanovic and golfer Adam Scott, whose split was confirmed last week. Sounds as though the two severed romantic tie in the last few months, which may have helped Ana with her recent resurgence on the WTA Tour. Maybe Ana should monetize her new-found tennis wins with a $2 text service to find out what she ate before each match? Then we could finally get to the bottom of that bathroom problem…

Not enough Muster-d: Luck ran out for Austrian wild card (and former world no. 1) Thomas Muster in the opening round at Vienna today. He was taken down in two (hard-fought) sets against countryman and lucky loser Andreas Haider-Maurer. That didn’t stop Argentinean blog FueBuena to make sure that a Muster reel (from past and present) was up on the blog today, featuring a couple of ’90s gems against Sampras and two great points from his loss today. Keep trucking, Mr. 43!

short(er) balls: The Bryan Brothers put up this video yesterday from a commercial they were supposedly shooting with ESPN. The theme: a 1970s Doublemint gum spin off. Twins abound! | Some fans are really ticked off about the Tennis Channel ticker. Who knew?! Guess they just want their tennis, old-school. | This idea certainly isn’t ‘old school': the iBall. OnTheBaseline talks with two young minds that have an idea on how to change ball technology in the modern game. | This should be bright too: Maria Sharapova’s engagement ring. Sounds like Mr. Sharapova is well-trained when it comes to his lady’s taste for expensive ($250,000!) jewelry. | And really, we’d love to Andrea Petkovic become much more than Petkorazzi. Girl is upbeat and down to earth. Down with the JJ and up with the Petko. Guess we’ll see what happens, no?

oh, mirka!

June 27, 2010

Tennis wives …and girlfriend: As we move into the second week, the roster of glam wives and gfs are still intact, with Mirka Vavrinec, Kim Sears, Bec Hewitt, and Brooklyn Decker rooting for their respective men.

Hewitt still in it: We were convinced that the grueling match between Lleyton Hewitt and Gael Monfils resulted in an upset (yes, we are that cynical), but the 15th-seed (and former champ) won in three sets and will face Nole Djokovic in the fourth round.

Mirka recycles: On Mirka’s an old-school shoulder bag from Louis Vuitton‘s Antigua collection. Husband Federer barely broke a sweat against Nono Clement. He next plays 2010 French Open semifinalist Jurgen Melzer.

Brooklyn relaxes: Mrs. Roddick already has her major title of 2010 in the bag, so now it’s Andy’s turn to produce. He’s up against the sleeper Taiwanese player Yen-Hsun Lu in the round of 16.

Kim steps up: With all eyes on her boyfriend (even the Queen!), Sears has done a good job of mixing up her outfits worn to watch Murray play: off-the-shoulder black for the warm-up against Jan Hajek; a floral print dress for the second round against Nieminen; a big colorful necklace for the third-rounder with Gilles Simon.

the hewitts: a family that dresses together…

January 23, 2010

Until they’re upstaged by the Federers, we’re expecting the Hewitts to rule the roost as the best dressed family of tennis.

Like father…: On Cruz, a black/green version of his dad’s limited-edition Yonex tee, available on the Hewitt site for AU$20 a pop.

Bec wears a salmon tank (with a zipper graphic) to Lleyton’s second-round match.

And for a family tennis session, she wears a boyfriend tank by Lauren Moshi. (You can pick one up here for $110.) And props to daugther Mia for rockin’ that badass cast.

Maybe it’s the faux hawk, maybe we’re feeling bad about his impending retirement (or about his having to face Roger Federer in the fourth round), or maybe it’s the red. Whatever it is, we are all thumbs up for Hewitt’s look at this year’s Australian Open. Good job, Yonex.

Buy: Yonex Aussie Open Crew, in white/navy/yellow/red, $49.95; and Shorts, black/grey/navy, $46.95; both from Midwest Sports.

Bracketology: Hewitt might be well rested after an easy win (at the expense of Marcos Baghdatis‘ shoulder), but the Aussie will need every trick in his bag if he wants to beat Roger. The odds are against him, of course; Hewitt has lost 13 consecutive matches to Federer (out of 23 played), including seven losses at the majors.

More: More Lleyton pics after the cut…

bec hewitt stands by her man

June 30, 2008

I root for Lleyton Hewitt during the grass court season because he’s pretty darn good on that surface. Another reason is that his wife, Bec Hewitt, looks pretty darn good sitting in the stands!

Lleyton’s Yonex kit, though, needs a makeover, stat. Those mini-rays of color bursting from the torso has had its run…

Now that the Australian has dropped out of the draw (a noble effort against Roger Federer), let’s review Bec’s ensembles from the grass season.

Bec watching Lleyton play at The Artois Championships in the Queen’s Club in London, where her husband is a four-time champion. (That “L” necklace is deelish!)

She wears a baby doll dress (with keyhole) during Lleyton’s marathon first-round match against Robin Haase: 6-7 (4), 6-3, 6-3, 6-7 (1), 6-2.

She switches to a jumper dress for the second round win against Albert Montanes: 7-6 (4), 6-0, 6-2.

And horizontal texture makes a showing in Lleyton’s 6-1, 6-3, 7-6 (2) victory over Bolelli in the third round.

And finally, Bec wears red during Lleyton’s final match of Wimbledon 2008 — the fourth round loss to R-Fed: 6-7 (7), 2-6, 4-6.
