(ot) fashion focus: mccartney, hermès, and dior

March 7, 2011

Christophe Lemaire didn’t do so bad for his first collection with Hermès. That pant-boot (“poot“), along with his nods to falconry and archery (equestrianism takes a momentary back seat), mixed with Lemaire’s own penchant for jumpsuits and things middle-to-far-east to create a presentation that probably will need one more round to win everyone over. Meanwhile, in the boardroom, Hermès CEO Patrick Thomas had some fightin’ words about his disinterest in letting LVMH, a 20% stakeholder in Hermès, collaborate on the company’s business development. fashion focus: monfils in vogue

October 6, 2009

The October issue of Vogue has a French-themed spread of beautiful gowns by Parisian couture houses Chanel, Christian Lacroix and, Christian Dior; and shot by Arthur Elgort on location in the City of Lights.

While the women’s clothes took center stage (this is Vogue, after all), we were disappointed that they left French tennis star Gael Monfils as prop — dressed simply in Nike whites. Were they painted into this drab clothing corner by contractual obligations to his apparel sponsor? Le sigh; our loss, since we know that he can look pretty good all made up for the camera.

Flip: You can see the entire spread here.

This week: Monfils is still gunning for this week’s Rakuten Japan Open in Tokyo. He took out Marsel Ilhan in the first round, faces Chiudinelli in the second, and will likely run into Stan Wawrinka in the quarters. Draw here (pdf).

maria sharapova, version 3.1

September 30, 2008

Maria Sharapova might be out of the running for the rest of the season (darn that nagging shoulder injury!), but it hasn’t stopped her from hitting the town — especially in the name of a good cause.

Last weekend she came out to Thousand Oaks, Calif. in full fashion regalia — a green dress from 3.1 Phillip Lim, shoes by Dior, and a brown hyper-zippered Stella McCartney clutch — in support of brothers Mike and Bob Bryan, who’ve taken a page out of Andre Agassi‘s philanthropic book with the establishment of their eponymous foundation.

Saturday’s All-Star Tennis Smash raised money for local and national charities supported by the twins, including City Impact, an organization supporting at-risk youth in Ventura County. The half-day event started with a pro exhibition featuring celebs and athletes, including Agassi (in his public playing appearance this year), Jon Lovitz, Jimmy-Jean Louis, Melissa Rivers, Lindsay Davenport, James Blake, Justin Gimelstob, Thomas Blake, and Robby Ginepri.

Afterwards, the brothers feted Agassi for his charitable endeavors at a gala dinner attended by Masha, among others. The evening began with an auction (autographed racquets, days with tennis players) and was capped off with performances by Evan and Jaron and Brandi Carlile.
