erke’s blue and orange

May 11, 2011

Yanina Wickmayer‘s fallen out of the new-It-Girl conversation, but we’re pretty sure no one told her. At this week’s Internazionali BNL d’Italia in Rome, she handed Ana Ivanovic the Serbian’s latest clay defeat. (Last week, it was in the hands of Bethanie Mattek-Sands in Madrid.) Wicky next plays top seed Caro Wozniacki, who started out the dirt season strong — she won Charleston — but lost to Goerges twice after. (Draw: Internazionali BNL d’Italia Women’s Singles)

Erke: Not a lot of new moves from the Erke camp as far as Yanina’s clothes are concerned. Same silhouette (keyhole in the back), different colorway.

philipp petzschner plays munich

April 27, 2011

Philipp Petzschner attended the players’ party thrown by this week’s BMW Open in Munich — and we’re glad he knows how to dress up! (Marat: take notes, ok?) Marcos Baghdatis also showed up with goofy camo Zorro mask. Browse: BMW Open party pics.

Draw: Petzschner, the other half of our favorite German doubles duo — honestly, we wonder what the slash fic must be like for these two — is still in the running for Germany’s next hot player along with Florian Mayer, qualifier Julian Reister, Philipp Kohlschreiber, lucky loser Denis Gremelmayr, and wildcard Dustin Brown. Petzsch upset top seed Mikhail Youzhny and faces Potito Starace in the quarters. (Draw: BMW Open)

yanina wickmayer’s purple hearts no match for the czechs

April 20, 2011

Fed Cup fashions: Belgian Yanina Wickmayer had outfit changes as she fought alongside Kirsten Flipkens against the Czech Republic at this past weekend’s Fed Cup World Group semis. For her match against Barbora Zahlavova Strycova — which Yanina won 6-4, 6-4 — she brought out a black Erke bubble skirt to help play the pink accessories. She lost her reverse singles rubber (to Kvitova in three sets) wearing a grey tank and a white skirt. The pink drop earrings from her hardcourt run were replaced with purple hearts.

More info: The Czechs won 3-2 (details) and will play Team Russia in the November final.

focus: yanina wickymayer’s pink balls

April 11, 2011

Nothing too crazy about the pink/white Erke kit on Yanina Wickmayer this year. She’s worn both a tank and a short-sleeved top, and in the last month switched up her black drop earrings for these huge pink balls. Fun times.

Tennis: Yanina’s ranked 23rd on the WTA list, buoyed by a trip to the final of the ASB Classic, a semifinal appearance at Indian Wells, and making the quarters of the Open GDF Suez and last week’s Family Circle Cup.

Buy: Similar fluffy pink earrings available in a few styles at etsy.com.

zverev’s through to the finals in metz

September 25, 2010

Qualifier Mischa Zverev‘s through to the finals of the Open de Moselle in Metz after Richard Gasquet withdrew because of a fever. He’ll face Gilles Simon, who took out Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-3, 6-2.

A long way: At the 2009 US Open, Zverev and Yanina Wickmayer were the only ones wearing Erke. A year later, their stable also includes Benjamin Becker and Tommy Robredo.

September 20, 2010

Thanks to reader Tahoe Editor for pointing out that Tommy Robredo did whip out two more Erke shirts at the 2010 US Open: a blue polo with white dots along the chest, and a black version of the white/green polo he wore in the first round.

flashback: robredo and wickmayer in erke at the 2010 us open

September 19, 2010

Tommy Robredo continued his round-robin of clothing sponsors, this time landing on Erke as played in the 2010 US Open. The Spaniard made it all the way to the Round of 16 (courtesy of retirements by Julien Benneteau and Michael Llodra before falling to Mikhail Youzhny.

Robredo wore LoS (Label of Sportswear) for a little while this year, and was in Tacchini before that. Robredo switched to LoS around the time Nole switched to Tacchini from adidas.

And on the women’s side, 15th seed Yanina Wickmayer also made it through to the fourth round before getting upset by Kaia Kanepi. Note the white layered skirt, the keyhole on the back of her pink tank (the same color trim is on her shoes).

More: We took a few more pictures of both players; see ‘em after the cut…

yanina wickmayer: you should go read “open”

March 17, 2010

Belgian Yanina Wickmayer — 13th seed at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells — was the last of her countrywomen to stand ground in the singles draw: wildcard Justine Henin was “upset” in the first round by Gisela Dulko; Kim Clijsters‘ plan to play no matches (save for the BJK Cup) between the Aussie ’til now failed against Alisa Kleybanova; and Kirsten Flipkens couldn’t hold her own against Elena Dementieva, who we’re hoping will take this whole thing.

Yanina fell to the Twitter-unfriendly Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez 6-4, 6-4 in the fourth round. MJMS next faces eighth seed Sam Stosur, who booted (coachless!) defending champion Vera Zvonareva from the tourney. (Draw: Women’s singles)

Wickmayer’s drug-related off-court battles are still in the air; she has an appeal pending with Belgian courts as well as with the Court for Arbitration of Sport. It could be months before rulings are handed down by those institutions. (Speaking of, the president of the ITF has been asked if anything’s going to happen to Andre Agassi after he revealed in his autobiography that he’s used meth during his career and lied to officials about it. Unfortunately, the statute of limitations is eight years and has already expired [just the right timing for publication?]. Thus, he’s off the hook.)

And now for the serious stuff: As usual, Yanina looked good in her Erke get-up, this time using a palette of blue and grey with pops of pink (and some graphics). See some detail shots (including her Nike shoes and her pink gym bag) — all after the cut…

we all know exactly where yanina wickmayer is

January 20, 2010

Yanina Wickmayer had to qualify for the 2010 Australian Open — even though she’s the world’s 16th-ranked player — because of her alleged violation of the WADA’s whereabouts rule. She said they were looking for her in the wrong place (uhm, this sounds like a vicious cycle) and the anti-doping agency just slapped her with a one-year ban. She got it overturned, but not before it forced her to miss the entry deadlines for tournaments in Auckland and Melbourne.

Wickmayer’s quickly righting the ship, winning Auckland as a wildcard (defeating Flavia Pennetta in the final) and reaching the third round in Melbourne after beating the un-Tacchini-ed Pennetta again — this time 7-6 (2), 6-1.

Looking forward: Wickmayer has essentially taken over Flavia’s 12th seed spot in the bottom half of the women’s draw. We expect her to fall to fellow Belgian Justine Henin in the fourth round or to Clijsters in the quarters.

Lovin’ them drop earrings. She’s also put some light pink into her teal/white/black Erke rotation.

wickmayer in erke: one more

October 17, 2009

Yanina Wickmayer and Erke aren’t quite done showcasing the Chinese sportswear company’s women’s tennis attire. Yanina wore yet another tank during her semifinal upset of top seed Flavia Pennetta at the Generali Ladies Linz in Austria. The score: 7-6 (5), 6-3. Wickmayer will face Petra Kvitova in the finals. Kvitova upset second seed Agnieszka Radwanska 6-3, 6-2.

This third outfit (see first and second) keeps with the same teal color scheme, but adds asymmetrical color blocking on that right shoulder.

wickmayer goes from shorts to skirt

October 16, 2009

Erke‘s doing double duty by going at it with Sergio Tacchini for airtime at the Shanghai ATP Masters tournament (the ballkids are in Erke; the lines officials, in Tacchini) and outfitting its postergirl Yanina Wickmayer halfway across the globe. They’ve switched her from cuffed shorts and a cap-sleeve polo to a sleeveless tank with a pleated, drawstring skirt.

The Belgian is through to the semis at the Generali Ladies Linz and will face Flavia Pennetta for a chance to win the ~$95,000 top prize. See the draw here.

FYI: Wickmayer’s already won a title this year (Estoril).

imitation is the most sincere form of flattery, we guess

October 15, 2009

That multi-year Erke deal as the Shanghai ATP Masters tournament’s official apparel sponsor has churned out some pretty good merch: equal parts classic (polos, tees), outerwear (hoodies, winter jackets, pullovers), and pants in bright colors like lime, fuschia, teal, red, and navy. Graphics punctuate the pieces here and there, and that tooth-shaped Masters Series logo, along with the Erke “swoosh” (or is it a pipe?) also make appearances.

Lacoste, is that you? It reminded us a little too much of Lacoste‘s current website (Exhibit A), but at least they were inspired by something visually appealing.

erke’s shanghai shoe

October 14, 2009

While the Shanghai ATP Masters website might need some work, they’ve figured out merchandising pretty well. They’ve tapped Chinese brand Erke to be their official apparel supplier. The licensing deal will go from 2009 to 2013.

The merch includes a pair of white tennis shoes with gold accents and some subtle and intricate designs on the sole: a combo of ancient flower prints and water waves (jpeg). If you may remember, adidas also designed a red/gold version of the Barricade in time for the 2007 Tennis Masters Cup, also in Shanghai. They followed that up with a gold/black version in 2008.

mischa zverev: before the fall, another erke peek

October 12, 2009

German Mischa Zverev had to retire from his first-round match against tenth seed Fernando Gonzalez at the Shanghai Masters Tennis Tournament this week. A right wrist injury, sustained during a fall early in the third set, left the score at 7-5, 6-7 (0), 2-2 — which sucks, since Zverev won that tiebreaker against Gonzo.

But before his departure, we got another peek into the wonderful world of Erke; Zverev’s the tennis face of this Chinese brand, which also calls Yanina Wickmayer one of its athletes.

Bracket: Roger Federer and Andy Murray pulled out of the tourney due to exhaustion and a wrist injury, respectively. Roddick and Nadal are grumbling about how long the tennis season is (with reason: have anyone play grueling tennis for 11 months a year and their body will surely fall apart).

Okay, I tried to find the bracket on that user-unfriendly tourney website. I will love you forever if you can help me track it down.

Deets: Note the color gradation detail down the sleeves of Mischa’s polo. Cute monochromatic wristbands, too. See more pics after the cut…

fashion focus: yanina wickmayer in erke

August 24, 2009

No need to rub your eyes; that’s not a blurry Nike logo you’re seeing. Instead, it’s the logo for a(nother) Chinese sporting goods company — the one with the largest share of the athletic shoe market in that country — Erke.

Erke made a splash last year by being a clothing sponsor to the North Koreans. And this year, they struck a deal with the ATP to become the Shanghai Masters Series’ official clothier beginning next year and through 2013. The license is worth about $14.6 million. E-window shopping: Browse the company’s Dutch website since the Chinese one isn’t user-friendly yet (surprise?).

We first saw the clothes on Yanina Wickmayer on Day 1 of the Pilot Pen Tennis tournament as she took down Tsvetana Pironkova 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 in a loooong qualifying final match. This gives the oft-snappy dresser (she used to wear Le Coq Sportif) a place in the main draw.

Everything in Yanina’s kit worked with the outfit: there was just enough blue (in her shoes, on her fingernails, on her Babolat racquet) to make the cap sleeve polo and the cuffed shorts radiate on the court.

The deets: a few more detail shots after the cut. Note the drawstring on the back of her polo, the polka dot texture on the fabric, the flaps on the shorts’ back pockets, and drop earrings that seem to be the lobe accessory du jour. Loves!
