defense spending at its finest

July 11, 2010

The Serbian Davis Cup team — that’s Nole Djokovic, Janko Tipsarevic, Nenad Zimonjic, and Viktor Troicki — headed to Split for this past weekend’s World Group Quarterfinal tie against Croatia. They took care of the home team with a 4-1 win (see the breakdown here).

And to make sure they got enough R&R to gear up for their rubbers, the Serbs stayed at the Le Méridien Lav in Podstrana, eight miles down the Dalmatian coast from Split.

Hotel Gansevoort - Serena vs. Rafa 2008

While it could be said that there were times Rafael Nadal and Serena Williams walked on water — he owns three back-to-back French Opens and she has already racked up eight Grand Slam titles so far — the organizers of the Sony Ericsson Open took it a step further by staging this exhibition on Monday.

Rafael Nadal - Sony Ericsson Open - Hotel Gansevoort 2008

It took a team five days to construct invisible (acrylic) platforms at either end of the Hotel Gansevoort’s rooftop pool. It would’ve been so much cooler had they brought in people to make it seem like it was business as usual; as if tennis on water happens all the time.

By the way: Gansevoort South, the South Beach sister to the Hotel Gansevoort in the Meatpacking District, is opening quietly this month after some delays. It’ll be worth the wait, though. The hotel’s main kitchens will be helmed by the ladies of the ONE Group; they’ve even scheduled to open a branch of their STK restaurant there in November.

Duly noted: Are those the new Nike kits Rafa and Serena will be wearing later this week?

venus’ party at miami’s hotel victor

The party and mini-fashion show put on by Venus Williams (to celebrate her graduation from fashion school) happened at Hotel Victor in South Beach. This gorgeous Art Deco hotel, like many of the other structures on Ocean Drive, has a well-designed interior and a raised infinity pool, among other cool designs.

And who can say “no” to a hotel with a jellyfish swimming across its home page. Impractical? Perhaps. Beautiful? Definitely.

short balls: tenors + fashion week + hotels = glam, glam, glam

A stroll down memory lane: A quick video piece on women’s tennis fashion throughout history.

(OT) Sleeping in transit: My buddy Matthew designed a jacket called Excubo which helps create private ‘nap time’ space when you’re out in public. Check out the segment CNN produced on “cutting edge designs” which featured this piece. (photo via gizomodo)

Fashion week sighting: Boris Becker at L.A.M.B. — that’s Gwen Stefani‘s line. NYT‘s Cathy Horyn skewers the collection. Too bad.

Advantage, Tennis: Portfolio.com laments the loss of Anna Wintour and Stefano Tonchi to the U.S. Open finals (when they should have been front row at a few fashion shows). Boo hoo?

Virginia Slims at Michael Kors: The latest presentation from Michael Kors harked back to the days of Virginia Slims (think Chrissie Evert and Billie Jean King). The show got great reviews, including one from Suzy Menkes. The models strut out to the Xanadu soundtrack:

“The Kors show was as fast and as direct as a hard hitter on the tennis court. Out came shorts, dresses and then every angle on American sportswear, from a lean safari jacket and pantsuit to trapeze minidresses shaded in a cocktail of mint, lime, orange and peach. They had a tropical vitality, while white served as a symbol of freshness, as it does on the tennis court.”

Pavarotti, R.I.P.: Tennis lost another fan in Luciano Pavarotti, who died this past Thursday at the age of 71. Bud Collins writes a great piece on how the great tenor loved the sport.

Macao != Times Square?: While the folks behind The Venetian Macao — the world’s largest casino — hope that their brand can withstand the shadiness of that Chinese territory, we’re just glad that the stage is set for one of the R-Fed vs. Pistol Pete exos this fall. (UD and IHT)

(OT) Palazzo Versace breaks ground: The Dubai outpost of Palazzo Versace in Dubai has started construction. (spa business)
