March 27, 2010

We all know who Anna Wintour (yes, wearing sunglasses during the evening session) and Mirka are rooting for to win in Florida. But who are your picks? Let us know in the comments section.

kuerten in miami

April 5, 2008

Guga Kuerten lost his first round match against Sebastien Grosjean in the first round of the Sony Ericsson Open. The scoreline: 6-1, 7-5.

While his game might not have held up, his fashion sense sure did. He wore a bright orange/red kit (with red hat, red shoes) from Diadora Guga Kuerten. Le sigh, we’ll sure miss his flair when he retires.

In doubles, he wore white and won one match with Nicolas Lapentti against Feliciano Lopez and Fernando Verdasco. They lost in the next round to Aspelin and Knowles. Lapentti also presented Kuerten with an award at an ATP banquet during the tournament.

Looking forward: Kuerten’s next stop on his farewell tour is a Challenger-level tournament in Florianopolis, Brazil. That event begins on April 14.

thumbs up: fila dresses the line officials in lime green

April 2, 2008

linesmen-fila-miami08.jpg

Props to Fila for dressing up their line officials in lime green at this year’s Sony Ericsson Open. (They used baby blue at Indian Wells.)

ballkids-fila-miami08.jpg

The ballkids got to wear red.

Challenge: For next year, Fila should try to dress each staffer in clothes that are actually their size. It’s not like they haven’t done it before. Remember the lineswomen from Roma?

Mikhail Youzhny - Miami 2008

Watch this clip of Mikhail Youzhny totally losing it after squandering a break point opportunity at 5-4 in the third set against Nicolas Almagro at the Sony Ericsson Open.

He smashes his head with his racquet. Three times. Turned out to be a bloody mess. Let’s hope he doesn’t play a brainy game ala Andy Murray because that didn’t do his head any good.

Misha eventually pulled it together and won 7-6 (4), 3-6, 7-6 (6) to advance to the fourth round, where he lost to Janko Tipsarevic.

Victoria Azarenka - Miami 2008

Victoria Azarenka fell to Svetlana Kuznetsova in the third round of the Sony Ericsson Open, but not before giving the Russian a scare; Azarenka won the first set and held a match point against Sveta before losing 6-1, 5-7, 0-6.

She wore the Set Point polo from Nike. Yep, my friends, those are polka dots you’re seeing.

davydenko’s in the quarters + an update on the match-fixing scandal

April 1, 2008

Nikolay Davydenko - Miami 2008

Nikolay Davydenko seems to be shaking away his demons left and right.

First, he’s standing up against the ATP anti-corruption team (“Tennis Integrity Unit”) investigating the match-fixing scandal, refusing to hand over phone records of his brother, Edouard, and his wife, Irina, until the ATP decides to foot his legal bill. His lawyer, Frank Immenga, told BBC Sport that charges will be dropped very soon, and that it’s not out of the question that Kolya will sue the ATP for damages.

Meanwhile, he just reached the quarters at the Sony Ericsson Open for the first time in his career, taking out Mario Ancic 4-6, 6-3, 7-5. Ancic was on a roll before falling to the Russian, beating 13th seed Andy Murray and 18th seed Juan Monaco (le sigh) in the previous two rounds. Kolya has yet to face a seed, and will take on Janko Tipsarevic in the quarters. The only time the two have met was in the hard courts of Russia in last year’s Davis Cup tie. (Kolya won that one 7-6, 6-1.)

As usual, he’s wearing a ho-hum kit from Airness.

Janko Tipsarevic - Miami 2008

So much for the clean-cut look of Janko Tipsarevic. After spending the first part of 2008 sans piercings, glasses, and breathing strip, he’s fallen back to his usual ways — likely to help deal with the heat and the humidity of Florida in the spring.

Yay: Tipsy’s on a roll so far, knocking out two seeds (No. 29 Fernando Verdasco and No. 11 Mikhail Youzhny) to get a spot in the quarters. He took out Yooz in three sets: 3-6, 6-0, 6-3.

Rafael Nadal - Sony Ericsson Open 2008

It was an all-blue battle between defending champion Rafael Nadal and German Benjamin Becker in the second round of the Sony Ericsson Open. Nadal won the match 7-5, 6-2.

On track: With Novak Djokovic out of the way, top-ranked Federer still rusty, and a confident endorsement from Bjorn Borg (albeit for performance on grass), we expect to see Rafa as the last man standing next Friday.

BTW: My friends and I were chatting last week about which feat would be achieved first: Rafa winning Wimbledon or Roger winning the French. Like Borg, we think it’s the former.

Rafael Nadal - Sony Ericsson Open 2008

Rafa wore his Global Power Sleeveless in New Blue. This time, the folks at Nike moved the graphic print to the side and upper back of the tee, leaving it clean on the front (a welcome change). I’m all about this Land of the Rising Sun motif on his headband. And the blue swirls on his white wristband are a nice touch.

Becker wore a similar shade from the Boris Becker line.

Andreas Seppi - Sony Ericsson Open 2008

Italian Andreas Seppi, the stylish male sheep of the Fila family — with the female being Akiko Morigami, of course — continues on his green streak with this crewneck accented with white lines. James Blake beat him in the second round of the Sony Ericsson Open 7-5, 6-3.

This is a welcome burst of color from the paler greys and purples that are dominating the rest of the Fila collection.

Juan Monaco - Copa Telmex 2008

Rich: I’ll see your Nole and raise you a Juan Monaco.

Here he is on Valentine’s Day hanging out at the courts of the Copa Telmex in Buenos Aires, Argentina, while recovering from the ankle injury that took him out of the running at the Movistar Open in Chile.

Bonus round: At this week’s Sony Ericsson Open, Juan went with Jesse Levine, Jonathan Erlich, Andy Ram, Flavia Pennetta, Katarina Srebotnik, Tamira Paszek, and Sabine Lisicki to the Miami Seaquarium where they enjoyed an afternoon with dolphins.

Jelena Jankovic‘s dress from the kick-off party has been seared into our minds. And just when we were getting ready to forget about it, we ran across a photo of the dress… taken from the back.

Enjoy!

I don’t care if Svetlana Kuznetsova looks like Ashton Kutcher in this photo — this is the best I’ve seen her look off-court!

Save for the slightly-too-long cuffs on that jacket, James Blake, as usual, looks pretty darn good.

Akiko Morigami - Fila - Sony Ericsson Open 2008

You better believe we were excited to finally see the new Spring/Summer 2008 looks from Fila Japan as worn by their sponsored player, Akiko Morigami. Here she is playing on the third day of the Sony Ericsson Open in Key Biscayne. She lost to Italian Sara Errani 2-6, 6-3, 4-6.

Ever since the winter we’d been dying to figure out what the Japanese arm will be doing for early 2008 (we already know what they’re doing for the rest of the world, with Tursunov and Kuznetsova showing off at Indian Wells last week). For the most part, thanks to Ichizo, all that we found were nibblets — a cryptic post on her own site talking about a photo shoot, and that picture on the right from the shoot’s stylist.

Until this week, of course. We’ll do another post about the rest of the men’s and women’s tennis collections soon.

More: For now, see more photos (and some close-ups) of Akiko’s outfit after the cut…

rafa’s dispatches from key biscayne

March 26, 2008

typewriter.jpg

It has been brought to our attention that Rafa Nadal will be blogging for TENNIS.com during this week’s Sony Ericsson Open in Key Biscayne, Fla.

He’ll talk about his matches and share personal photos that he takes and poses for during the next week-and-a-half.

“We’re thrilled to have Rafael Nadal, one of the most exciting players in the game, blogging for TENNIS.com during the Sony Ericsson Open,” said TENNIS.com and TENNIS Magazine editor-in-chief James Martin. “Rafa will take our fans behind the scenes for exclusive content that they can’t get anywhere else.”

Archives: This isn’t Rafa’s first stab at blogging. He’s done it twice for the ATP, even getting an “Editor’s Choice” distinction for his posts in June 2006. He also wrote from Roland Garros last year.

Hotel Gansevoort - Serena vs. Rafa 2008

While it could be said that there were times Rafael Nadal and Serena Williams walked on water — he owns three back-to-back French Opens and she has already racked up eight Grand Slam titles so far — the organizers of the Sony Ericsson Open took it a step further by staging this exhibition on Monday.

Rafael Nadal - Sony Ericsson Open - Hotel Gansevoort 2008

It took a team five days to construct invisible (acrylic) platforms at either end of the Hotel Gansevoort’s rooftop pool. It would’ve been so much cooler had they brought in people to make it seem like it was business as usual; as if tennis on water happens all the time.

By the way: Gansevoort South, the South Beach sister to the Hotel Gansevoort in the Meatpacking District, is opening quietly this month after some delays. It’ll be worth the wait, though. The hotel’s main kitchens will be helmed by the ladies of the ONE Group; they’ve even scheduled to open a branch of their STK restaurant there in November.

Duly noted: Are those the new Nike kits Rafa and Serena will be wearing later this week?

fashion: more loud prints from vania king

March 25, 2008

Vania King - Indian Wells 2008

American Vania King follows up her loud stripes from Indian Wells with this lighter floral pattern for this week’s Sony Ericsson Open in Key Biscayne, Fla. It’s possibly another dress from Lily’s of Beverly Hills.

Edit: Nope — a quick call to the LBH confirms that this is not their dress. So if anyone knows the answer…

Scoreline: Vania is through to the third round of qualifying. Good luck to her!
