to hat or not….

July 31, 2010

I’m fine with it, BUT NOT ALL THE TIME, okay? (When in Southern California, do as the Angelenos do…)

Top seed (and wild card) Andy Murray is hobbling his way through the draw at this week’s Farmers Classic in Los Angeles. He needed to go to a tiebreak before brushing off Federer-killer Alejandro Falla 7-6 (7-3), 6-1 in the quarterfinals. He plays Feli Lopez in the semis. Lopez beat James Blake 3-6, 7-6 (8-6), 6-4.

tattoo watch: finding love and hope in a shirtless robert lindstedt

July 29, 2010

Tattoo Watch: Swede Robert Lindstedt is still in the doubles draw with Romanian partner Horia Tecau at this week’s Farmer’s Classic in Los Angeles. They were practicing a day before their match against the team of Butorac and Rojer. FYI, Rojer used to play for UCLA’s tennis team. (Draw: Doubles)

More: A closer look at Robert’s tattoo, which says “Et in asperrimis temporibus amor et spes adsunt“, in the gallery below.

Practice makes perfect: Here’s Andy Murray hitting with Santiago Giraldo a day before his debut at the Farmers Classic in Los Angeles, Calif. The top seed — and last-minute replacement for Novak Djokovic — plays qualifier Tim Smyczek.

We could watch him do this all day!

tipsarevic rolls to beat of his own drum

July 29, 2010

We already know that Janko Tipsarevic is different from the average bear, but he has shown this even more so while in Los Angeles for the Farmers Classic ATP Tour Stop. Over at Sweet Spot, James LaRosa got some taxicab confessions out of our munchkin Serb (something about sheep looking at doors?).

And earlier this week he mentioned a racquet bag change via Twitter. He rolled out the new look for his opening dubs match with Feli.

They’ll resume their partnership for a match today against the team of Ross Hutchins and Jordan Kerr.

Draw: See who’s left playing singles and doubles at the Farmers Classic in Los Angeles.

los angeles: thursday oop — where will YOU be at noon?

July 28, 2010

TSF missed taking a pic of Feliciano Lopez toting a Louis Vuitton dopp kit yesterday, but here he is looking equally as fab taking some practice time in before his doubles match tomorrow (with Janko; against Hutchins/Kerr).

sightings in the stands: who needs samurai when you’ve got dudies?

July 28, 2010

Last night’s eye-candy-filled doubles match between Tipsarevic/Lopez and Blake/Querrey (will I get a cavity in my cornea??) had no visible Sam-urai contingent, possibly contributing to the Americans’ 6-3, 6-3 loss in the opening round.

Meanwhile, Dudi Sela, now clad in Lacoste, took out shotmaker Xavier Malisse 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 in their first round singles match. He’ll next face the fourth-seeded Lopez.

Draw: See who’s left playing singles and doubles at the Farmers Classic in Los Angeles.

sa watch 2010: andre in los angeles

July 27, 2010

Andre Sa, in town for this week’s ATP tour stop on the courts of UCLA (aka the Farmers Classic), is in the doubles draw with teammate Horacio Zeballos.

He was on hand on Tuesday afternoon to help tourney top seed Andy Murray warm up. Lovin’ those gold Diadora shoes!

He even made a guest appearance at the Bryan Brothers concert last night at Molly Malone’s. (Thanks to Strawberries and Scream for the pic!)

a shirtless dmitry never gets old

July 27, 2010

Dima Tursunov, though knocked out in the qualies by Devvarman at this year’s singles at the Farmers Classic, is still entered in the doubles draw. He plays with Ernests Gulbis and will face the team of Santiago Gonzalez and Travis Rettenmaier (yes, THAT Travis Rettenmaier) in the first round.

Back to Dmitry: you’re welcome.

in lacko, diadora lives on

July 26, 2010

Lukas Lacko is playing an opening round match against the Latvian Ernests Gulbis at this week’s Farmers Classic in Los Angeles. While it’s not as crazy as the days of Guga Kuerten, the Diadora kit still has a slew of the loud colors (blue, red, and yellow on the wristbands) with subtle accents (the gold logo, contrast placket), but subdued with a darker, dominant color. Extra credit for the shell spiral print on Lacko’s tee.

Meanwhile, Gulbis’ hair is almost feral.

P.S. Gulbis beat Lacko in straight sets — 7-5, 7-5. The tourney’s fifth seed next faces the winner of Beck vs. Fall. (Draw: Singles.)

(O.T.) P.P.S. He annoyed the #@*&$# out of us in Shortbus, but we can’t get enough of Jay Brannan soothing/haunting cover of The Verve Pipe’s “The Freshmen”.

what to do with that credentials badge

July 25, 2010

This woman, hanging out at yesterday’s first day of qualifying at the Farmers Classic in Los Angeles (Draw: Qualies, Main) figured out what to do with those danged credential badges. She put it in her hair! A closer look after the cut…

a date with muzz, lacoste jewelry, and off-topic galore!

July 23, 2010

Meeting Murray: Andy Murray might be back with girlfriend Kim Sears, but that shouldn’t stop you from working on getting up close to the top ATP Brit. adidas has started a raffle that could win you a meet-up with Andy in Miami (plus some Barricade-themed goods). It’s another part of their recent campaign (remember the adizine?) to toast this tennis shoe. Raffle: Enter here.

Street ping pong: From July 24 through August 22, Londoners can look out for 100 ping pong tables that will pop up across all across the city (including firehouses, apparently), all to be used for pick-up games. More info at ping.etta.tv/.

Updates for L.A.: The Bryan Brothers are playing two venues on the eve of their appearance at next week’s Farmers Classic in L.A. They’ll be at Air Conditioned Lounge in Venice and at Molly Malone’s on Fairfax. No word yet on where Nole will perform his burlesque act.

Lacoste jewelry: Lacoste will debut a line of jewelry at the same time it shows the Spring/Summer 2011 show this September. Expect to see necklaces, bracelets, and charms for bags and mobile phones. (via styelist)

(ot) Lego my buildings: The National Building Museum is currently showing Towering Ambition, the work of LEGO Certified professional Adam Reed Tucker. He’s built 15 large-scale replicas of famous structures, including the Empire State Building, St. Louis’ Gateway Arch, and Fallingwater.

(ot) we want — CDG: We’re on a year-long shopping diet that ends March 1, 2011, so consider this our version of chewing and then spitting it out. We love the Gossamer-esque Comme des Garçons v-neck sweater in black (via Tobi)

(ot) Is that a bone in your briefs…? The skeletal theme of Alexander McQueen‘s branding has now made its way to underwear — one of the British designers final projects. Bonus round: See a teaser ad for the line here). (via oki-ni)

(ot) etsy on our mind: Oakland, Calif.-based artist John Carling is busy dreaming up the cutest monsters this side of Where The Wild Things Are. We love this whale print, “Everything is Vibrating“. (via Thrillist SF)

Bone up with this cheatsheet from the just-turned-five Refinery29. (Happy anniversary!)

in los angeles, james blake takes you to the limit

July 22, 2010

James Blake, who’s slated to play at next week’s Farmers Classic in Los Angeles, will be stopping by a local Sport Chalet to meet up with fans. He’ll be available for pics and autographs; everyone who comes can win a J-Block shirt (by his sponsor, Fila) and other merch.

If you decide to pick up one of the fan tees, proceeds from the sale will benefit Blake’s foundation, The Thomas Blake Sr. Memorial Research Fund.

The rest of the pack: Other ATP stags in the Farmers Classic barn include Novak Djokovic, Sam Querrey, and the Bryan Brothers. And the tourney’s Monday night extravaganza will feature Andre Agassi and John McEnroe. More info here.

on Carson, California

May 2, 2007

Re: the Roadmap, it’s good to see that the J.P. Morgan Chase L.A. Open — “the ultimate tennis celebration” — will be a featured SEWTA stop. Whodathunk that the Carson would get such a high profile? First they get an IKEA, then billionaire Phil Anschutz (of AEG) adds David Beckham to the roster for the L.A. Galaxy (a Major League Soccer team that calls Carson’s Home Depot Center home). Becks has made a mark, too, opening an American arm of his eponymous soccer training academy in the city.

All Carson needs is a swank restaurant or two, some good publicists, and it’s set. Who’s gonna step up? Perhaps Gyu-Kaku Torrance?
