nadal and his whale

March 20, 2007

Thank god the Rafa Nadal trophy photo shoot wasn’t televised somewhere. Because surely the FCC would have been all over it like Prince’s Super Bowl “malfunction”.

hantuchova’s return

March 19, 2007

hantuchova - indian wells 2007
Totally gorgeous and glowing in her Nike Aussie Avian dress

Daniela Hantuchova defeated Svetlana Kuznetsova 6-3, 6-4 to win the Pacific Life Open title on Saturday. No need for CBH to rehash what Svetlana was wearing. Fila: please help her.

But I do want to point out that Hantuchova didn’t always look so good. Remember this? SCARY.

hantuchova - skeletor

The press went crazy. Maybe because she was practically naked, and maybe because she was flirting with anorexia? At the very least, we were all just concerned that she’d gone the way of Patty Schnyder and her epsiode with that svengali.

Daniela: I hope you keep eating and keep up the amazing tennis. And if you’re ever feeling down and defeated, just remember: Martina Hingis thinks you’re brilliant.

fashion review – Pacific Life Open women’s semi #1

March 17, 2007

Svetlana Kuznetsova (2) and Sybille Bammer (33) took the the desert courts yesterday for their semifinal. Kuznetsova won the three-setter 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 6-1. But who won the fashion contest?

short balls – spring cleaning: sharapova, thai open, shoe phone

March 15, 2007

Cleaning out my inbox today….

Night Tennis: the new Twitter? The Nation reports that the Thailand Open is pulling out all the stops this season. They’ve got Miss Thailand World contestants as ballgirls, they’ve created a new logo, and will be running an extensive marketing campaign (USTA: take some notes) including interactive roadshows, the Thailand Open junior challenge, and (don’t write this down) Tennis in the Dark. WHY IS EVERYONE ABOUT THIS ALL OF A SUDDEN? if I read about one more tennis tournament adding Night Tennis to their schedule, I will throw up. I’m betting this will go the way of the round robin very soon.

Tennis Phone: They’ve already made too many tennis puns about this phone over at Red Ferret, so I’ll leave you to enjoy the short entry for yourself.

Sharapova look-alike contest - Indian Wells

Sharapova clone contest: Does anyone else besides me think that NONE of the women they chose to be Maria Sharapova look-alikes for Canon’s Indian Wells campaign *actually* look like her? They’re all brokefaced. Life-size cardboard cutouts would have been the way to go. (via the San Diego Union-Tribune)

Novak Djokovic won against Julien Benneteau, 6-3, 6-1, at the Pacific Life Open.

Here’s Novak on the Chris Evans radio show on BBC2. He also talks a little bit about his good friend (and sometimes doubles partner) Andy Murray.

battle of the (head)bands

March 15, 2007

David Ferrer (14) d. Carlos Moya, 1-6, 6-2, 6-3. Two long-haired Spaniards in headbands. Ferrer might have downed Moya in three, but who won the fashion showdown?

janko calls you out on your s*&t

March 12, 2007

With his stylish glasses, you’d think Janko Tipsarevic was just too cool for you:

Janko Tipsarevic at Indian Wells

In a way, he is. I’m in love with the white goggles from the top photo, and the striped FILA shirt from the bottom photo. But both outfits are missing… something. Perhaps a headband?

What makes him cooler: his post-match interview yesterday, where he responded to a reporter calling him out on turning some kids away when they asked for his autograph.

Q&A with pacific life open’s tournament director

March 8, 2007

I always like skimming the local news when a tournament stops in a town. You never know how a journalist will cover a sport that probably doesn’t get much general interest outside of the Grand Slams. It usually ends up as a mix of human interest stories, celebrity profiles, and the wire feeds.

In Pam Springs it’s a little different, since the Pacific Life Open is pretty much considered a fifth slam (they expect 300,000 people to cross through the gates this year) and tennis is an integral part of the desert lifestyle.

So I’m a little disappointed that this Q&A with tournament director Steve Simon in The Desert Sun wasn’t more insightful or engaging. Perhaps he didn’t want to rock the boat; it wasn’t that long ago that the tournament was in danger of closing up shop in Indian Wells.

At the very least, this article reminds the readers about the changes the Sony Ericsson WTA tour plan to make under their “Roadmap to 2009.”

too much sharapova?

March 2, 2007

sharapova clones in theĀ desert

Canon announced that it will bring “the style and substance of the Canon Powershot Brand” as Host Sponsor and official camera and photo printer (!) of the Pacific Life Open.

There will be Sharapova and Jensen look-alikes who will roam the grounds to hand out goodies and to pose for photo opps. Really? We don’t need to pose with Maria that much.

Do we?
