venus covers up, and then some

February 18, 2010

This is Dubai, after all: We are pretty sure that the “skin baring” dress that Venus Williams would’ve kept her out of defending her singles title at the Barclay’s Dubai Tennis Championships (hey, what’s this event if not without controversy?), so it was probably a smart move that she went back to the EleVen dress that she wore at the 2009 U.S. Open.

And speaking of, she again got some henna tattooing done (like how she did at this tourney last year), this time adding some ink on her left thigh.

Draw: Venus looks good for a repeat; she’ll be up against the story of the tourney, Shahar Peer, in the semis. Teenagers Victoria Azarenka and Agnieszka Radwanska will vie for the other spot in the final. ([pdf]).

More: A few images (including the tattoos) -after the cut…

it must be lonely at the top 400

Caroline Wozniacki leads the field at this week’s Barclay’s Dubai Tennis Championships as the event’s top seed. She’s off to a decent start so far, beating Dominika Cibulkova 6-2, 7-6 (2) in the opening round. And in what could be a duplication of what happened last month in Melbourne, Caro next faces Dubai newbie Shahar Peer, whom the Dane beat at the Australian, and then faces Li Na in the round after, who Caro lost to. (Draw: Women’s Singles.)

And two snaps to the Woz for reaching a career-high No. 3 in the SEWTA rankings; she’s currently the only Dane in the top 400.

In the flesh: This live version of the tennis performance dress from adidas by Stella McCartney‘s spring/summer 2010 collection is more fun than we anticipated. The preview pics we saw didn’t show off the mesh on the upper back of the performance dress (it adds an extra layer of sexiness, no?). FYI, Caroline wore the bloomers-esque shorts for Fed Cup play last week.

Buy: Shop for the adidas by Stella McCartney goods here.

More: A few detail shots from Wozniacki’s outfit — including her Delibuta gym bag and pom-pom socks in those Lucrari shoes (with a Barricade V skeleton) — all after the cut…

fashion focus: checking in on li ning

February 18, 2009

That hazmat orange on Jelena Jankovic‘s dress spilled over from Ivan Ljubicic‘s kit from Li Ning. The former top-fiver has had a slow 2009 so far, losing in the second round of the Australian Open (to Tsonga) and in the first rounds of Zagreb, Rotterdam, and Marseille.

We love the Guga-esque orange/blue/gold colorway of his kit. The pictures above, from Zagreb, show the gold piping on his shirt and the scale texture on the side panels.

And in Marseille, where he lost to Feliciano Lopez, we get a peek at his blue warmup top.

On the women’s side, Li Ning works with Zi Yan, who lost to Vera Dushevina in the first round at Dubai.

We’re giving Andy Roddick a clean bill of health for his first quarterly physical of 2008. Does anyone have a differing second opinion?

We didn’t think so.

Scoreline: Roddick defeated Juan Carlos Ferrero 6-2, 6-4 in the first round match at the Dubai Tennis Championships.

a trimmed andy murray overcomes roger federer

Andy Murray has finally emerged from the brink of injury — the one that caused a family feud — with a convincing win over Roger Federer in the first round of the Barclays Dubai Tennis Championships. He grinded his way to a 6-7 (6), 6-3, 6-4 win, using a playing style that Roger criticized. Is Roger offering advice or is he being a sore loser?

Samson in reverse:
I’m all for letting men grow out their hair, but I am relieved that Andy’s finally cut down a little bit of that mop. He should buzz it all of for the summer swing.

A black bag: Here’s a new, more muted Nike duffel for the World No. 1. And in case you’re keeping track: Federer has yet to win a title this year. And he’s unsure about participating in the Olympics. But wasn’t Beijing his excuse for not playing Davis Cup? Hmmm

rafa leaves his mark at the top of the world

Okay, Rafael Nadal earns some brownie points with me by leaving his mark on the Burj Dubai, which will be the tallest artificial structure in the world once it is completed later this year. The 160th floor of the skyscraper will sit at 2,066 feet above ground level!

Nadal is taking part in this week’s Barclays Dubai Tennis Championships. He struggled in the first round but got by Philipp Kohlschreiber 3-6, 6-1, 6-4.

I really like that white Nike tee on him. If you know where we can find it, leave a comment.
