jurgen melzer: we believed it when we saw it

February 8, 2010

We had a hunch that the current adidas Spring Edge line for men didn’t look quite right in the white/green colorway, but looks pretty darn good in black/green. And to prove our point, here’s Jurgen Melzer on his way to a semifinal exit at last week’s PBZ Zagreb Indoors. He lost to eventual champ Marin Cilic.

The women took a week off to fight for the flags, but the men were vying for titles this past week.

Marin Cilic defended his title at the PBZ Zagreb Indoors with a 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-3 win over Michael Berrer. After the match, Marin explained that second-set hiccup that went Berrer’s way.

“I was surprised with the level of [Berrer's] game. It’s not that I underestimated him; it’s just that I did not expect this level of tennis in his first major final. There were no ups and downs in his game; I had to earn every point.”

Marin currently has a 15-1 record for 2010. He won Chennai and made it to the semis of the 2010 Australian Open.

trophy watch: tsonga rams chardy and cilic goes back for seconds

February 9, 2009

The inaugural South African Open in Johannesburg saw an all-French final between hitting partners Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Jeremy Chardy. Tsonga, who did not drop a set all week, earned $79,000 for his 6-4, 7-6 (5) performance. This is his third career title and first of 2009.

Props to the tourney organizers for coming up with a one-of-a-kind memento of Tsonga’s achievement, however Lord of the Flies it may be. I’m just going to think that those aren’t real horns; I’ll sleep better at night.

And in Croatia, two lanky locals — Marin Cilic and Mario Ancic — played in the finals of the PBZ Zagreb Indoors. Cilic’s 6-3, 6-4 win gives him his second title in five weeks and his third overall. He also now has a 13-1 match record for 2009, an ATP-best.

In Vina Del Mar, Chile, Fernando Gonzalez took home his fourth Movistar Open title by beating Jose Acasuso 6-1, 6-3.

We thought we’d check in on the PBZ Zagreb Indoors website (since last year’s site had us swooning). They were on the right track with this outer space theme, but unfortunately they didn’t take it past the landing page.
