battle of legends

Two early 20th century tennis legends are still duking it out in 2007. Fred Perry and Rene Lacoste faced each other today in San Jose… each donned by the Andys — Murray and Roddick, respectively. And while Fred Perry-clad Murray came out on top with a 7-6 (10-8), 6-4 win, we need to discuss who won the equally-important clash of clothing sponsors:

Roddick wore classic Lacoste in black and white (there were costume changes). His 5-year contract started on May 1 of last year, after an ugly (trust me) relationship with Reebok.

The shirts looked good on their own, but I thought the contrast didn’t work well with the white shirt:

On the other hand, Murray stuck with one style of Fred. His 4-year deal with the company, which started sometime in 2005 (likely after his amazing run at Wimbledon), grants him a hand in choosing the Fred Perry outfits he wears on the court. According to The Guardian, he has also been instrumental in taking the company’s clothes back into the tennis fray after a thirty-year absence. (What was Fred Perry doing in the meantime? Outfitting music heavyweights, including Damon Albarn, Pete Doherty, the Black Eyed Peas, and 50 Cent.) So what did Murray come up with?

Much like Roddick, he stuck to a conservative black and white ensemble, but added a lime green accent that tied the whole color scheme together.

The score? Fred Perry, 1. Rene Lacoste, 0.

And in the gratuitous skin-showing round, there is a tie:

i think lacoste is the better brand… just having a look at its success off court you can tell. although on court i think keeping their label to only a select few will keep them a more exclusive brand. nothing worse than watching a tennis match with two players wearing the exact thing… well for me πŸ˜›

roddick should start wearing the bright lacoste colours that are evident through their off court collections πŸ˜›
