Pleats, sir, may I have some more?

by

Glam girl Maria Sharapova graced the Wimbledon grass with this amazing take on her Nike 2007 summer dress:

The piece has two tiers of pleating attached from the waistline to the upper back. SlamXHype adds: “Maria’s favorite feature, a regal ruffled collar, adds the unexpected elegance of ‘pleating’ to her traditional tennis kit, giving it an almost angelic quality.” I think looks more “regal” than anything. Queen Elizabeth I?

It’s better than I’d imagined. What do you think of the outfit? Tell us.

it’s okay, MY FAVE WAS THE ONE SHE WORE AT WIMBY ’05!!!! THAT WAS THEEEEE BEST!

  2. Craig Hickman Says:

It’s amazing, alright. Amazing that someone would have the gall to wear gills on a dress.

    It’s just. too. much.

  3. Christine Says:

oh my gosh thank you craig, I thought I was the only one who HATED this dress. She has gills on the back of it, like a fish.

ps. didn’t like the French open dress either. the drop waist did not work for her.

  4. Austy Says:

Yeah, I don’t like it either. Sorry ‘nita…

  5. Paww Says:

To be honest, shes fit she can wear whatever the hell she likes and still look shit hot. 😉

  6. Lady Hooligan Kat Says:

I was on the fence about this outfit at first. But ultimately, I think the ruffles (aka gills, scales, scalloping) are annoying.

  7. nobozo Says:

Sorry, but I like it compared to other dressing being worn this year. It’s very feminine, youthful, and flattering when she plays. I don’t see “gills” when the frills move. Instead, its more like little wings — very Swan Lake. This young woman is so tall and her toned body can wear just about anything — even the ghastly whites of Wimbledon.

i don’t care what she wears all i care is about her game. She is winning so let her wear wathever she wants she still looks good out and in the tennis courts. GO MARIA SHARAPOVA!!!

I think it’s brilliant, I preferred her Rg dress though, that was truly stunning (she and Ivanovic were best dressed there). The swan theme fits well and it suits her, a lot better than Serena’s open back monstrosity….

    yecchhhh.

I hate this dress. My initial reaction when I saw the ruffles on the back was, fish gills.

Has anyone noticed that between the frilly skirt and keyhole on the back of this dress and the dropwaist on her RG dress she and/or Nike just ripped off the SMC dress Kirilenko wore last year?

  12. Erwin Says:

Yeah the RG dress reminds me of Kirilenko’s 2006 Wimbledon dress.

  13. Elle Says:

    I like it somewhat…
I like the ruffles on the skirt.
Maria is so hard core. She doesn’t seem like a nice, warm person.
So seeing her in ruffles was refreshing.
But, I agree that there was some fish gill action in the back.
There should have been some editing on the top. Maybe, a simple ruffle somewhere, but not at the back.
I wouldn’t call this her “lucky” look, as she lost to Venus today…

  14. Rahul Says:

oooooo. beautiful dress. looks fabulous when the skirt
becomes fluffy with the breeze blowing. way to go maria . . .

  15. Ray Says:

The dress is very cool, she is a great player and the dress added a lot of finness to her strokes because of the way it move with the swan like wingson the back.

  16. jktooo Says:

reminds me of fish gills! didn’t like it then, it still looks bad.
