trophy watch: pan-am games, mercedes cup, countrywide, etc.

This week’s trophy watch.

The Mercedes Cup put the band-aid on otherwise ho-hum week of trophies by tacking on a C350 to the winnings of Rafa Nadal, who beat Stanislas Wawrinka for his second straight Stuttgart title.

At the Pan-American Games, Jorgelina Cravero (left) and Betina Jozami won the doubles, while the singles podium had Venezuela’s Milagros Sequera (center), Colombian Mariana Duque (left), and Jozami.

Radek Stepanek shook off the Black Widow’s curse to beat James Blake 6-3 4-6 6-3 in the finals of the Countrywide Classic at UCLA. I’m glad Radek doesn’t often win titles; his body would take a beating from doing “the worm” too much on court. (This celebration is up there with Petr Korda‘s scissor kick and Youzhny‘s salute.)

Russian Anna Chakvetadze (in her purple adidas outfit) trounced Akiko Morigami (wearing Fila) 6-1, 6-3 at the Western & Southern Financial Group Women’s Open in Mason, Ohio. Agnes Szavay raised a big cup after her win against Martina Muller at the WTA Palermo tournament.

Belgian qualifier Steve Darcis came out of nowhere to beat Austria’s Werner Eschauer 6-1, 7-6(1) in the finals of the Dutch Tennis Open in Amersfoort. Kolya, what happened to you this week?!
