fred perry reruns andy murray’s kit

September 1, 2007

The return of Andy Murray from wrist injury also saw the first appearance of clothier Fred Perry since the Scot went MIA in the spring.

Yawn: TSF was hoping that FP would design a new kit for Andy, but I guess there’s no need to invest in a player whose schedule is so inconsistent?

(Just for the record, we still think the flag-as-wristband is a great design. Davis Cup: are you listening?)

In a third round match at today’s U.S. Open, South Korean Hyung-Taik Lee took out Murray 6-3, 6-3, 2-6, 7-5.

with clement, lacoste sticks to solids

September 1, 2007

Frenchman Arnaud Clement lost to Swede Thomas Johansson 4-6, 6-7 (4), 7-6 (9), 6-7 (1) in the second round of the U.S. Open. He did so in classic Lacoste style.

At any tourney, TSF pretty much knows that Clement will show up in solid-colored polo shirt with a bandana. Sometimes there are shades, sometimes not. Depends on the sun, I guess.

What do you think of Clement’s look? Tell us!

FYI: He’s the only one who wore Lacoste solids this tourney. All the other guys wearing the French label wore shirts with multiple color blocks on their shirts. (More on that later).

FYI, part 2: Johansson has been working with Magnus Norman aka Sweden’s most fashionable dude.

masha’s day dress: now you see it, now you don’t

September 1, 2007

Poor Nike Day Dress. First, the bastard stepsister of Maria Sharapova‘s red U.S. Open night match outfit didn’t get as much play at Maria’s press conference last week (it stayed on a mannequin while red dress got the photo opp).

And on the court, the Day Dress only got one cameo this year (and a not-so-happy one at that): the World No. 2 and defending champion lost today to 30th seed Agnieszka Radwanska 4-6, 6-1, 2-6 in a performance that disgusted even Masha’s father Yuri, who packed up his stuff and left his seat before the match was over(!).

Sadly, the dress didn’t look so good in action. The skyline detail would have been better off as beading instead of print.

What’d you think? Tell us!

Buy: The Day Dress is available in White/Black (as worn by Masha) or in Black/White. Both for $95.00 at Midwest Sports.

wilson throws a party at marquee

September 1, 2007

Wilson did their share of pre-U.S. Open buzz by throwing a party for players, including Roger Federer, Ana Ivanovic, and Novak Djokovic. They did it at Marquee in Chelsea.

On the big screen they were playing this promo of Roger interviewing himself about the [K]Factor racquets. Funny in concept, but boring in execution.

And at that party, The Tennis Channel had Ivanovic do some reporting. She interviewed, among others, the World No. 1:

Q. The other night you were working as a journalist as well at the Wilson party.
ANA IVANOVIC: It was exciting. It was the first time I did something like that. Tennis Channel asked me to do a feature with me, so I accepted. Also during the night, I was going around and interviewing a few people. I got interview with Roger. That was great.

Q. What did you ask him?
ANA IVANOVIC: I asked him about New York, how much he’s enjoying party. I was actually very surprised to find out that he enjoys shopping.

Q. Is Roger Federer a good interview?
ANA IVANOVIC: Yeah, yeah, he was a lot of fun. I felt weird asking him questions. But it was something different. He was really good actually.

Q. He’s aware of your career and your success?
ANA IVANOVIC: Yes. (source)

party: canas for espn deportes la revista

September 1, 2007

Before the start of this year’s U.S. Open, Guillermo Canas (above, with girlfriend Fabiana Semprebon), Nicolas Lapentti, Mariano Zabaleta, and Juan Monaco were among the players in attendance at a party in Soho earlier this week to celebrate the September issue of ESPN Deportes La Revista. The issue, with Canas on the cover, notes that 16 of the ATP’s top 100 players are Latin American. (via Tennis Wire)

mattek slides out in silver

September 1, 2007

In her secound-round loss to 18th seed Shahar Peer, the Cher of tennis — Bethanie Mattek — wore a slightly more tame silver top and headband from the Bebe Sport collection.

We’re all probably better off, but I was really curious to see what the other two outfits were… More metallic shades, perhaps?

hewitts: lleyton and bec just for a sec

September 1, 2007

Too bad Australian hope (and ’01 U.S. Open Champ + ’04 finalist) Lleyton Hewitt crashed out of the secound round last night — I scoffed as Chris called it — because that means we’d have less chances to catch Bec Hewitt in the stands.

(And we weren’t even looking at Lleyton. At least not because of those bowling shirts that Yonex has him wearing.)

Bec wore this jumper top for Lleyton’s first match against Amer Delic, and sealed the deal with some drop earrings from Dior. For round two, she wore a sleeveless bright red tank.

Not sure if his new not-so-tennis-obsessed routine will do Lleyton good at the Grand Slams. He should take the ladies shopping one more time, then go home and think about this straight-set loss to Agustin Calleri.
