flashback: a kangaroo on roger’s shoe

October 6, 2007

Roger Federer took his first (of three) Grand Slam titles this year at the Australian Open. He beat Chilean Fernando Gonzalez 7-6 (2), 6-4, 6-4 in the final.

While it might seem that Nike kept Roger’s outfit subdued for the fortnight in Melbourne, make no mistake that they were crafting a look specifically for this budding fashionista.

His Aussie shoes were customized with a kangaroo and two marks (not discernible from this photo) which represented his two titles (’04 and ’06).

And here’s a shirt worn for training.

why we’re really excited about masha’s return

October 6, 2007

Consider TSF among the most disappointed of the bunch when Maria Sharapova announced withdrawing from this week’s Porsche Grand Prix in Stuttgart because of her nagging shoulder injury.

And its not just because we wanted to see a display of her tenacity; we also wanted to see her new post-U.S. Open Nike outfit.

The pink Sharapova Drop Shot Double Layer Dress features a front patch pocket and a cable screenprint down the back. (I darkened the picture on the right to show this detail.) The inner heathered layer has a Swoosh on the chest.

What do you think of the dress? Tell us!

So while she skipped Stuttgart, Masha’s due for an appearance at next week’s Kremlin Cup. Of course, this could be another chapter of “Girl who cried ‘I’m healthy to play'” — we won’t know until she actually shows up in Moscow for her first match. FYI, she received a wildcard after the withdrawal of a seemingly healthy Justine Henin. We have our fingers crossed for her health.

There are other pretty cute pieces in the women’s collection. Take a look.

fashion flashback: novak the tease

October 6, 2007

Another vintage Novak Djokovic moment from this year’s Australian Open, who lost in the fourth round to top seed Roger Federer 2-6, 5-7, 3-6.

The Serbian’s since turned that around by notching a win over Roger at this summer’s Rogers Cup in Montreal.

But his crazy shirtless ways have stayed the same.

retail therapy: chanel, lacoste, ralph lauren, nike, and lily’s of beverly hills

October 6, 2007

At Chanel, randomness ruled: The spring/summer 2008 ready-to-wear shows at Paris Fashion Week brought out the trendsetting ways of Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel. A fanny pack for your ankle? We love it. And of course their signature stenciled tennis racquet makes an appearance. See a review here, and the complete collection here. (

Sale #1: The Polo Ralph Lauren Tennis collection (including their goods from the U.S. Open) are 30% off through Thursday, October 11. Free shipping if you spend more than $195. See the coupon here.

To the men in Los Angeles: We finally get noticed by the Nike store at the Grove, who’ll start selling guy’s goods on October 12.

Sale #2: And if blowing your load at Nike wasn’t enough, the Lacoste shops are having a sale ’til October 14. $25 off a purchase of $150 or more.

Supporting the locally-grown: I’m all about What’s All the Racquet tracking down the smaller tennis apparel companies, like Lily’s of Beverly Hills. Their Bella Donna line shows promise, but everything else is pretty blah. I’ll take my adidas by Stella McCartney any day.

It’s never too early: The baby might still be years from swinging a racquet, but you can infuse it with tennis energy with these fun socks.
