all eyes on australia: rafa’s nike outfit for his 2008 swing down under

Now that the Australian Open floodgates have opened, here is Rafael Nadal‘s outfit for his early ’08 stint in the Southern Hemisphere.

He’s still with the Nike Global Power tank and the 15″ Board Shorts, this time in a red/white/grey/blue colorway.

adidas got bitten?: I know fashion is all about recycling, but this design is waaaay too similar (and too soon) to the adidas offerings from 2007 (see Juan Monaco in the Power Web crew and him and Nole in the Summer YOC Polo).

His shoes and bandana after the cut…

agnes szavay signs with fila

Making it big: Hungarian Agnes Szavay has cashed in on her 2007 success (two titles) by signing a clothing deal with Fila. She’ll debut the company’s new line at the 2008 Australian Open. The 70s-inspired tennis collection will have a red/black/white colorway. We’ll post pics when we get ‘em.

Collateral damage: Le sigh. This deal probably means the end of those Marta Makany-designed dresses (pictured above) that Szavay wore last season.

richard pagliaro: serena’s oz open outfit

December 10, 2007

Richard Pagliaro‘s Tennis Week blog revealed the Nike outfit fashionista Serena Williams will wear for the 2008 Australian Open. The outfit: a “one-piece, white tunic-style dress adorned with royal purple accents over a pair of purple lycra biker shorts”. Biker shorts. Wow. The 80s really are back! And in case you’ve forgotten…

agassi-lycra-shorts.jpg

Okay, so her use of lycra is more tasteful than Andre Agassi‘s. Props to her for pushing the envelope. She explained her design philosophy to Pagliaro:

“I want to look different. I’m OK if I have to wear a fabric that’s not your basic nylon and spandex. Let’s mix it up, try different fabrics. If I’m slightly uncomfortable, that’s OK. I’m usually able to play through it.”

And play through it she has. Remember that peksy bow on her U.S. Open dress? Friggin’ tore that shit off when it started bothering her.

We can’t wait to see white/purple outfit in action. In our minds, her 2007 Aussie Open look was the best of the year, so let’s hope the ’08 lives up.

Also, I wonder if there will be a “night” outfit?

BTW, Pagliaro was part of a small group of journalists who, while in town to cover the Davis Cup finals, took a trip to Nike’s headquarters in Beaverton, Ore. for a sneak peek (how jealous are we?!) of the Aussie Open outfits and shoes to be worn by Nike’s stable of players, including Roger, Rafa, and Masha.

trophies: more haarhuis, plus a russian flashback

December 10, 2007

haarhuis-blackrock-rah.jpg

Paul Haarhuis was last man standing at the year-end tournament for the BlackRock Masters Tennis tour. (He also won an Outback Champions event two weeks ago.) Haarhuis took out Frenchman Guy Forget 6-1, 6-7, 10-8. In case you’re wondering what’s in the background, that’s the pipe organ (UK’s largest) at the Royal Albert Hall.

Russian fete: Russia honored Igor Andreev and Anna Chakvetadze as the best Russian tennis players of 2007. Anna clearly earned her award after winning four singles titles this year (most of her compatriots only snagged one). Andreev’s distinction, on the other hand, is a headscratcher: he had no singles titles in 2007 (while Tursunova got two, while Youzhny and Davydenko bagged one each). A possible reason is his great singles performance in the Davis Cup semis against Germany.

Anastasia Myskina added emceeing this event to her list of non-tennis work (along with other emcee gigs plus soccer commentating). And the Fed Cup ladies won the Team of the Year award.

tattoo watch: janko + arthur schopenhauer

The intricate tattoos on Janko Tipsarevic‘s back are apparently courtesy of German philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer, or so said Ted Robinson during Janko’s 2007 U.S. Open match against Rafael Nadal.

Watch the clip (from USA’s Open coverage) here.

masha gives andy roddick’s mom a gift

December 10, 2007

andy-roddick-charity-event.jpg

This weekend was big for socially-conscious tennis. In the Palisades, the Jensen Brothers hosted their first Bank of the West Pro-Celebrity Tennis Classic. And in Boca Raton, Fla., Andy Roddick and his camp just wrapped up another successful Andy Roddick Foundation Charity Weekend (their seventh). 475 guests attended the dinner-dance on Saturday night (with the Davis Cup trophy there, make that 476). Maria Sharapova won a silent auction to have the first dance with Andy, which she bought for Andy’s mom. How sweet!

And 2,000 people showed up to watch a mixed doubles match between Andy and Brenda Schultz-McCarthy, and James Blake and Masha (who was wearing the Drop Shot Cable Top from Nike).
