With the top guns primping for their ATP stop in Dubai next week, here were the others who stepped up.
Nicolas Almagro downed David Nalbandian 6-1, 7-6 (1) in the finals of the Abierto Mexicano Telcel. Almagro already has the Brasil Open’s 2008 trophy on his mantle.
In Zagreb, Ukranian Sergiy Stakhovsky beat top seed Ivan Ljubicic to take the PBZ Zagreb Indoors. Stakhovsky is the first lucky loser in 17 years to win an ATP title.
In Memphis, Steve Darcis took out Robin Soderling 6-3, 7-6 (5) in the final of the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships, denying the Swede yet another chance at a title (Michael Llodra beat him at last week’s Rotterdam final).
Oliver Marach (in white) and Slovakian Michal Mertinak (in blue) won the doubles title in Acapulco over Luis Horna and Agustin Calleri. For the women, Maria Jose Martinez and Nuria Llagostera take home some plaques.
The compact Italian Flavia Pennetta beat Alize Cornet 6-0, 4-6, 6-1 for her second title of the year.
In Dubai, at the Barclays Dubai Tennis Championships, Elena Dementieva beat Svetlana Kuznetsova 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Focus: We love Elena’s zip-up with the exaggerated striped cuffs (and mock turtleneck). A step in the right direction for Yonex!
The frizzy Liezel Huber and her partner Cara Black win the women’s doubles title over the Chinese team of Yan Zi and Zheng Jie.

In the women’s final at Memphis, Lindsay Davenport beat Olga Govortsova for her second title of the year (and the fourth since her post-baby comeback).

Anyone else think that Almagro has Djokovic-esque qualities in his face?
