Maria Sharapova begins her 2008 clay court campaign with a 6-1, 6-3 win over qualifier Barbora Zahlavova Strycova at the Bausch & Lomb Championships in Amelia Island, Fla. This is Sharapova’s first appearance at the tournament.

In case you were wondering…

If you remember the trophy ceremony at Miami, there was a brief exchange between Mary Joe Fernandez and Kolya Davydenko about his new stick. It sounded like he only had one in his bag, but a rep from Prince said otherwise. Not only did he have enough of the Ozone Pro Tour (which he just switched to), but he also had access to the Ozone Tour racquets he’d been playing with prior to Miami.

And re: his shoes, aparentemente he was very particular about picking a new pair. He tried on shoes from Nike, adidas, etc. — and he had even tried on a different brand for the first round before settling into the Prince O-Series. And he lived happily ever after.

Licking the Serbians

Women’s Tennis Blog has been all about the Serbian stamps created to honor the tennis quintet that’s all the rage in that country — but understandably she’ll only show us images of Ana Ivanovic‘s and Jelena Jankovic‘s. The stamps were unveiled as part of the promotion campaign for Serbia’s participation at the Beijing Olympics.

For those of you interested in the mens, here are their stamps below. Just how I like it — lick ’em once and send them on their merry way.
