CC Day 3: Marat Safin vs. Wayne Odesnik

Day 3 was our first day with a pass at CC. Thanks to Pete for being kind enough to let me in at the last minute…

Our first order of business was watching Marat Safin hit with Igor Kunitsyn and coach Hernan Gumy on the practice courts. Some teenager next to me was in total awe of Safin. Refreshing, no? The queue for his autograph session was pretty massive…

Next up was Andy Roddick, who hit with this young fellow whose name no one knew (if you were there that afternoon, please drop me a line).

The evening’s main match pitted Marat against play American Wayne Odesnik in the second round. The Russian and fifth seed had to sit out the Beijing Olympics because he missed the rankings cutoff (they entered the top 50 and he was in the 70s at the time). He looked pretty good, still working on his movement now that the pain in his knee has disappeared.

We also caught a bit of Mardy Fish’s press conference after his match against Spadea earlier in the day. Mardy won 6-7 (5), 6-1, 6-0. He spoke about being confident in his game going into the U.S. Open. He looked alright beating Florent Serra today 6-4, 6-4 for a spot in the quarters.
