Despite the fact that everything froze over in New York during Monday’s BNP Paribas Showdown for the Billie Jean King Cup, tennis still ended up with media placement — good job, Jerry Solomon — in places that mattered, like style.com’s Style File blog. Contributor Derek Blasberg, fascinated by the vibrant colors of all four women’s on-court attire, talked to Jelena Jankovic about tennis fashion.
Blasberg, of course, noted Jelena’s deal with ANTA, who gives her freedom over design; her mother, Snezana, who herself has a fashion background; and Jelena’s love of clothes.
We at TSF really do think that this is tennis’ year to have its place in the limelight so, Jelena, you have to step it up (especially now that Masha is AWOL). You’ve made some pretty sweet choices — your asian-inspired Reebok dress from the 2008 Open, for example — but you’ve also fallen to the dark side a few times. We need more Bally bags, Louboutins, and shutting-down-DKNY-for-two-hours — and less pink bows and cell phone dresses, got it? Oh yes, and winning a major wouldn’t hurt. Tennis’ popularity depends on you!
