finally, another final: federer springs back

May 16, 2009

Was it our fault? Man, can we stop and reflect for a second? All this talk about Roger Federer‘s underperformance is based on a record that has him through to four semis and two finals in six tries; one of those finals is at tomorrow’s Mutua Madrilena Madrid Open showdown between him and Rafael Nadal.

This is the first time the World No. 1 and Federer are facing each other since that epic Aussie Open final. To get there, Federer easily beat Juan Martin del Potro 6-3, 6-4. Nadal had a significantly harder time because of his bum right knee, brusing aside Nole Djokovic 3-6, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (9) in four hours and three minutes — the longest match in Masters Series history.

Opponent’s chronic injury a-flaring + auto-peptalk = possible Madrid title for Roger? We’ll find out tomorrow!

A green chair, in more ways than one

May 16, 2009

Furniture creator Hugh Hayden shows off his take on tennis ball furniture (remember this? and this?) with a chair that made an appearance at BKLYN Designs last week.

Haydn wanted to extend the lifespan of the balls beyond the tennis court — only so many can be used as dog toys and for walkers, right? — so he came up with this design which incorporates 297 of ’em into a fun, green conversation-starter. See some other items from his playful FUNATURE line here.

practice makes… for possible return

Masha‘s nine-month layoff from singles play possibly ends at next week’s Warsaw Open, where she shares the same quarter as top seed Caroline Wozniacki and Alona Bondarenko (Alona upset Kuznetsova at Madrid this week).

In the same half of that draw are Jelena Dokic and Bethanie Mattek-Sands. Lurking in the other half are Dani Hantuchova and Zheng Jie.

Sharapova, who enters the tourney as a wildcard, has been sidelined with a shoulder injury since August of last year. She played doubles at Indian Wells this year and lost in the first round.
