arthur ashe kids day

We haven’t seen the official attendance numbers for this year’s Arthur Ashe Kids day but judging from what we saw peeking into the stadium, it looked pretty well attended. Players did their part to promote the sport to the young ‘uns, including Kim Clijsters, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak DJokovic, Andy Roddick, Melanie Oudin. Non-tennistas showed up as well: Lindsey Vonn, Demi Lovato, and the Jonas Brothers, among others.

In the trenches: Check out DtL’s post from the day’s event.

While we’re all about this event, the parents need to figure their s**t out before next year. Don’t park your strollers in the middle of a busy pathway. Don’t let your kids run around the bleachers in the middle of matches. (There are plenty of open spaces in the 42 acres of the grounds for them to spazz out in.) And please, as much as you can help it, wait until the changeover before you enter/leave a match.

A poorly organized, user-unfriendly event. Crushingly crowded with all featured “entertainments” insufficient and inaccessible. The stadium show was a travesty of “winging it” with a dysfunctional sound system that made whatever it was that was going on ludicrous. The concessions were understaffed and staff was poorly trained, registers did not work, listed menu items were not available and hot dogs and ice cream cost $5. Without prior warning parents who carried the day’s needs: cameras, water, snacks, hats, cover-ups, rackets, wipes, etc. in backpacks were required to check backpacks at the entrance and charged $5 to do so.
This was a day for greedy vendors, not for kids. it had almost nothing to do with the great and elegant tennis player, Arthur Ashe, nor with tennis. The promise, in the ads re. the presence of the top tennis players and featuring photos of the players, was a lie. Shame on the organizers for a demeaning, cheap-shot effort.

Favorite moments: Ducking into the thick arbor vitae surrounding Courts 1-5 to catch a long-distance glimpse of Federer and Nadal through dense wind screens. Leaving.
