sealed with a k-swiss: 2010 us open

September 12, 2010

The Bondarenkos made dents in the 2010 US Open women’s singles brackets and looked good doing it. Kateryna and Alona both wore versions of K-Swiss‘ Y-Back dress — in hyacinth violet for Kateryna and black stripe for Alona (there’s also a version in red that went untouched).

Alona’s was easily the best outfit from the first day of play in New York (and we hadn’t even seen VenusEleVen dress at that point). In the second round, the blonde sister crushed a repeat of Melanie Oudin‘s run deep into the US Open draw; she fell to 6th seed Schiavone in the third round. Meanwhile, Kateryna scored one of the tournament’s first upsets by beating Li Na, the eighth seed. Kateryna lost in the second round to Cibulkova in a third-set tiebreak.

And Vera Zvonareva, of course, didn’t drop a set all the way through to the finals (including an upset of top seed Caro Wozniacki in the semis). Unfortunately, her mental and emotional (un)resolve got caught up in the intensity of playing that final, and she couldn’t give Kim Clijsters a fight, winning only three games.

Buy: Y-Back Dress, $75; Mesh Pleat Skirt, $50; Striped Pleat Skirt (not pictured), $55; Criss-cross tank (not pictured), $48;

Bonus: It would be fun to see the girls go Cali (say, at Indian Wells? or Miami?) with these board shorts? They’ll set you back $40.

2010 US Open fourth seed Jelena Jankovic wasn’t really in the conversation as a gunner for this year’s title, as seen by her immediate hiccup in the first round against Simona Halep, who served for the match against the Serbian before falling 7-5 in the third. JJ also needed three sets to beat qualifier Mirjana Lucic (two snaps to her for making it to the main draw, btw) and then fell to Kaia Kanepi in the third round.

We love that she added the pink sports bra and hot pants under the purple ANTA dress that she’s been wearing for the summer hardcourt swing; way to rejuvenate an outfit, no? Note the purple detail in her shoes, and the pink in her fingernails.

And on 21st seed Zheng Jie, the Chinese brand went with swirling shades of white and blue — an underdeveloped version of what Fila put on their ladies (Clijsters, Agi Szavay). Zheng crashed into the resurgent Ana Ivanovic in the second round and only won three games.

2010 US Open Nikolay Davydenko ran into that gorgeous backhand of Richard Gasquet and fell in straight sets. Nothing to write home about re: his Dunlop kit, and even now that he’s officially a face for that company’s new line of Biomimetic racquet’s, he played through two rounds in Flushing Meadows with an unstenciled Prince.
