(ot) oki-ni, styled by kitsuné

June 17, 2011

Save for a few June-gloomy days (that’s one of our “seasons” here in Los Angeles), we’ve had a chance to whip out our spring wardrobe, which consist mostly of preppy pieces and bright solids from head to toe. Which is why we love French fashion label Kitsuné‘s interpretation of the stock at oki-ni in creating this lookbook — including product from Billionaire Boys Club, Porter, Comme des Garcons SHIRT, and Kitsuné itself.

wta pre-wimbledon party: flower power

June 17, 2011

After all, this is a garden party: Flowers and flower prints from Alize Cornet, Yaroslava Shvedova (next to bestie Vania King), and Ana Ivanovic (wearing Matthew Williamson) also appeared at the WTA party in London last night.

wta pre-wimbledon party: hot explosion of vivid brights

June 17, 2011

Springtime in London: A crop of last night’s WTAers attending the pre-Wimbledon party at The Roof Gardens stepped out in bright shades of red, pink, and orange — and everyone looked pretty darn good. Top marks go to Sabine Lisicki, Elena Vesnina, Maria Sharapova, and the tight-bunned Ana Ivanovic. We could’ve lived without the pink wrap attached to Jelena Jankovic‘s dress, but she gets brownie points for not falling to the dark side); same goes for the too-shiny fabrics on Vania King and Sania Mirza.

wta pre-wimbledon party: no grey areas

June 17, 2011

Black and white: The ladies of the WTA know how to play with a good margin of error, and it’s hard to go wrong with donning some black and white to a party. Laura Robson took a simple, cap-sleeve dress to the next level with a scooping neckline; Sorana Cirstea played sexy peekaboo with lace; Tsvetana Pironkova bared a shoulder and threw on a leather belt; Francesca Schiavone channeled Diane Keaton, Caroline Wozniacki wore Stella McCartney, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova matched her updo with a cocktail (napkins) dress, aaaand Monica Niculescu.

now hiring: the atp and wta (+ more!)

June 17, 2011

Need a job? There are two interesting job posts up right now — one each at the WTA and ATP sites. The ATP is looking for a Rankings & Prize Money Coordinator, a position that would fit well for any rankings-savvy tech geek who loves numbers, spreadsheets and is an Adobe Fireworks whiz. As for the WTA gig (located in St. Petersburg, Fla.), the tour is looking for a Creative Services Designer whose job is to “coordinat[e] creative deliverables.” Obviously you’ll have to be design-educated for this one, as the job requires heavy work in Adobe Creative Suite and a portfolio of work submitted with your application.

Ballpersons, not kids: The US Open is holding its annual tryout to be a ballperson at this year’s event. The tryout for members of the public happens this coming Thursday at 3 pm at the USTA National Tennis Center. Applicants must be at least 14 and able to work three weeks in the late summer (from the week of qualifying through the Open). Those hired are paid a hourly wage.

More USO jobs: There’s plenty to be had come late summer in NYC. Want to spend a few weeks out at Flushing? Might as well get hired for it. | Internship: Via craigslist, the USTA is looking for a seasonal intern to work with its Advanced Media Group. Like crunching numbers? Might be your thing…

want: lacoste keychain

June 17, 2011

The debut of the Lacoste jewelry line, which we’d been eagerly awaiting since the announcement last July, hit the stores for Spring/Summer 2011. Note: the jewelry comes packaged in a pouch made from the same pique material as the the company’s signature L.12.12 polo.

And because I haven’t learned my lesson from owning that monogramouflage keychain — all but one of the dog tags have fallen off — I’m going back for seconds with this Lacoste charmer. (Our other choice? The “1212” cuff.)

Buy: Lacoste Club Charm, $53.99, All the other goods are here.

Geek out: If you’re interested, the descriptions of the themes for their jewelry collection is after the cut…

wimbledon on the water 2011: a housing works fundraiser

June 17, 2011

So much going on out in NYC between Wimbledon starting next week and folks drumming up interest for the U.S. Open. If there ever was an argument for me to move out east, it’s how much tennis-mania hits the city in the summer!

You’re already gawking at LES tennis fashion this Saturday, and stopping by the HSBC event on Monday (of course!). One more thing to add to your list: our favorite non-profit, Housing Works (which I’m still waiting for L.A.’s Out of the Closet to mimic), is hosting a tennis tournament this Tuesday at the Roosevelt Island Racquet Club. $50 to play, $20 to watch.

she shouldn’t have smiled

June 17, 2011

Forget about Roger Federer‘s records possibly being broken by Nole or Rafa — we’re in awe of Bethanie Mattek-Sands finally snapping Jelena Jankovic‘s record for worst gimmicky outfit worn to a party. It only took three years to oust her shopping buddy. Congrats, BMS!

A scowl on Bethanie might have helped us all stomach this, uhm, dress, designed by the UK-based Alex Noble (who frequently works with Lady Gaga). But all the giddiness and excitement was too much to contain; she couldn’t help being the balls of the ball.

Browse: Check out Noble’s blog to see some his other work (including the main outfit worn by Gaga in the “Judas” music video).

the gals get glammed for wimbledon player party

June 17, 2011

Girls’ night out: Those pictures of Bethanie Mattek-Sands have us shuddering. But at least a few of the WTA ladies got all glammed up in the right way for last night’s Wimbledon Players’ Party.

summer monday? spend it with monica and jimbo

June 17, 2011

NYC greenery: Plenty of New Yorkers (and Americans, we presume) have “summer Fridays.” You know the idea: it’s freakin’ nice outside so employees get to peace out for all or part of Friday to frolic in the sun. While we appreciate such a gesture from the higher ups, before you go off sunbathing and boozing before 5 pm today, you might want to re-consider utilizing those free hours this coming Monday.

It is, after all, day one of Wimbledon, which means you could wake up at your usual ungodly time and take in some of ESPN 2’s coverage of day one at The Championships. After a few hours of tubing, you’ll be itching to get outside (it is summer, after all!) and we’ve got just the solution for you: Monica Seles and Jim Courier, playing some grass-court tennis at Rockefeller Plaza. Seles and Courier hit the court at noon on Monday for what should be an entertaining hit and giggle, former ESPN commentator and Tennis Channel buff Brett Haber will emcee.

Can’t make it Monday? There’s more: Play (yes, you! Play!) on Manhattan’s only grass court Monday through Friday. To reserve a court call (855) 688-7715. Can’t find the right bounce on the grass? Prince has pros who will be there to touch up your game. The sched? Monday 4 to 5 and Tuesday through Friday noon to 1 and 5 to 6. Plus: Get your racquet re-strung Monday through Friday between 11 and 1; eat some special strawberries and cream all week long; and play some Wii “Grand Slam” tennis. Find out all the info of HSBC’s Wimbledon at Rockefeller Plaza here.
