the eye(let)s are the window into fila’s world

June 25, 2010

Fila chose to go with “zig zag mesh” as their theme for this year’s Wimbledon, putting the ladies in pieces from the Collezione line. They’ve got all the basics in simple silhouettes — cami, tank, polo, double layer tank, skort, dress — with eyelets, ruffling, and ric rac trim (on the skort) to add some flare. And props to Fila for coming up with a warm-up jacket that’s appropriate for covering up the ladies walk onto the court. (Nike didn’t fare so well with trying to dress Azarenka.)

Buy: Fila Collezione Dress, $65; Long Jacket, $75; Skort, $45; all at shop.fila.com.

Fila Draw: Clijsters, the eighth seed, is through to the third round after easy wins over Camerin and Sprem. Up next is Kirilenko before a fourth round match against Henin. The other ladies haven’t fared so well: Szavay lost in the first round to Makarova; Kuzie was upset in the second round by Rodionova. Browse: Ladies’ Singles Draw.

Bonus round: Sveta got her stylized monogram sewn onto the sides of her shoes. <3 Last pic in the gallery above.

venus waves szavay-vay to the french

May 29, 2009

Venus, out! Third seed Venus Williams dropped out of the French Open in the third round for the third year in a row, losing to Agnes Szavay 6-0, 6-4.

Bracket: Szavay faces fellow blonde Dominika Cibulkova in the fourth round.

Buy: Agnes is wearing the dress from Fila‘s Spring Center Court line. It offers SPF 30 protection, and is available in black or white with pink/gold accents for $54.99.

fashion focus: fila falls flat for fall

October 15, 2008

Was it just me, or did I totally see a pro-high fructose corn syrup ad on TV the other day. WTF?!

Now, back to our regularly scheduled programming…

The Hungarian Yeti: We haven’t seen much from Agnes Szavay for these summer and fall tournaments, which means we haven’t seen her flaunt Fila‘s latest collection.

Not that she’d have much to work with. The periwinkle blue of the summer colorway didn’t provide enough contrast to bright white of that Cap Sleeve Top (right), and the silhouette of the Heritage Dress wasn’t enough to save it from drowning against the colors of the courts at Flushing Meadows.

That being said, the dress showed promise (save for those unfortunate patches of sweat), and we love the trim on the Cami tank (above, left).

Meanwhile, the super-striped Heritage tee on the guys worn by Janko and Dmitry is the showcase of an otherwise so-so men’s line.

As for the fall collezione line (colorway: white/light brown), you won’t see this anywhere but on your local tennis courts. Check it out here.

Buy: Fila Women’s Summer Heritage Cami Tank, 34.99; V-Neck Tank, $39.99; Cap Sleeve Top, $34.99; Heritage Dress, $53.99; colorway: Periwinkle and Crystal blues.

Men’s Summer Heritage Stripe Top, $36.99; Heritage Crew, $32.99; colorway: Peacoat Navy and Surf the Web (!) blue.

big bad janko

September 29, 2008

Thanks to Alisa for this photo of Janko Tipsarevic‘s shoes from sponsor Fila, and to malimeda for the clarification: Jankela means(ish) “Big Bad Janko” and is what the tatted tennis player is called by family and friends.

Other Fila athletes with nicknames on their shoes? Agnes “Agi” Szavay, Marin “Chila” Cilic, and Rainer “Shaker” Schuettler.

szavay’s halter dress: what could have been

June 26, 2008

If not for a gaffe at Fila, the Summer Collezione Dress (in all white, of course) would have been Agnes Szavay‘s uniform for this Wimbledon fortnight.

I saw this dress myself at the company’s showroom in New York. It’s pretty cute.

Buy: Fila Summer Collezione Dress, in white/black/coral, $53.99.

Make that two less dresses

June 26, 2008

Upsets abound at Wimbledon, even in the fashion department. First it was Akiko Morigami‘s withdrawal from the tournament, and now this: there was a miscommunication in the ranks at Fila that kept Agi Szavay from being properly fitted for her gorgeous Wimbledon halter dress they designed for her. Alas, this left her wearing separates at this year’s tourney.

But not to worry; while she might not be able to flaunt her curves the way she likes to, the Summer Collezione V-Neck Tank, with its gathered fabric bust detail, looks elegant from all angles of view.

Scoreline: The Hungarian is through to the third round of Wimbledon after defeating Monica Niculescu 5-7, 7-5, 6-2. She’ll face Anabel Medina Garrigues in the fourth round.

Buy: Fila Summer Collezione Tank, available in white and coral colorways, $39.99, TW.com.

the men and women of fila at roland garros

June 2, 2008

Fila had its stable of players flaunt the company’s spring offerings. We already showed you some of the women’s gear (Karin Knapp wore pink from the Center Court Group) but there are more bits. Unfortunately for the Fila, their men didn’t do so hot, so the collection was out of the picture by middle of week 1.

Svetlana Kuznetsova is being considered alongside Dinara Safina as the Russian who’ll take the final spot from that top half of the draw. (Check out who’s left in the Round of 16.)

The fourth seeded Russian will face Victoria Azarenka in the fourth round. She wears the bubble-patterned sleeveless top from the Spring Baseline collection.

Agnes Szavay wore the white version of the Baseline Sleeveless Top during her loss to Petra Kvitova 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 2-6 in the third round. We don’t have a picture of it here, but I can tell you that Agi’s shoes, which are also from Fila (a claycourt version of the Alfa), has her name embroidered onto the shoe.

Thanks to Tennishead for this photo of Agi…

Janko Tipsarevic, Marin Cilic, and Dmitry Tursunov all wore the key piece for the company’s men’s spring Centre Court collection. The Fila team came up with the yellow thumbprint pattern based on what the players wanted for spring — something fun and with more color.

The pattern also appears as more muted detail in a white polo, but none of the players wore this to their matches.

I got to see Dima’s customized shoes, too. (His name’s on them.)

Janko fell to Nicolas Lapentti 4-6, 6-4, 1-6, 6-7 (7) in the first round. Cilic lost to ninth seed Stanislas Wawrinka 6-7 (3), 6-7 (4), 1-6. (How did he get to No. 9?!) And Tursunov bowed out to Frenchman Jeremy Chardy 6-7 (1), 3-6, 4-6 in the third round.

Andreas Seppi wears a perfomrance polo as he falls to Mario Ancic 2-6, 6-7 (1), 2-6 in the first round.

trophy watch: keeping up with the agneses

anna-chakvetadze-paris-spr08.jpg

Looks like Anna Chakvetadze has finally shaken off the jitters (and physical toll) of that home invasion robbery during the off-season. She defeated defeated the strped Agnes Szavay 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 at the Open Gaz de France on Sunday.

<3: Anna is looking good in the adidas Competition series. You can pick up this Competition 4 Jacket for $54.99.

agnieszka-radwanska-pattaya-2008.jpg

And Agnieszka Radwanska eked out a win at the Pattaya Open over American Jill Craybas with a scoreline of 6-2, 1-6, 7-6 (4). The Pole revived a Nike skirt (vintage!!!) from last spring’s Sphere line. Perhaps she just wasn’t into the skorts from the current season?

FYI, she had both knees taped white during the match.

bionaire-challenger-2008.jpg

On the Challenger level, Matilde Johansson (left) defeated Canadian Ekaterina Shulaeva 3-6, 6-0, 6-1, at the Bionaire Tennis Cup Challenger in Colombia.

szavay earning her stripes: fila collezione’s spring 2008 line

February 10, 2008

agnes-szavay-gazdefrance-spri08.jpg

As Fila‘s new face, Hungarian Agnes Szavay is doing her best to get the most on-court time for her clothing. She tripped up in the season’s Australian swing (losing back-to-back first round matches at Gold Coast and Melbourne), but rebounded quite well this week, beating Hantuchova and Dementieva before losing to Anna Chakvetadze in the Open Gaz de France finals.

Dress like Agnes: The Collezione Jacket, $57.99; Spring Colezione Polo, $44.99; and the Cap Sleeve Top, $39.99.

fashion focus: agnes szavay’s fila separates

January 7, 2008

agnes-szavay-fila.jpg

Agnes Szavay didn’t have much chance to show off her new Fila outfits in singles matches at the Mondial Australian Women’s Hardcourts, but she took full advantage of a showcase through doubles (with partner Dinara Safina).

The spring colors are white, black, and red. Fila moves away from the circles that dominated the 2007 line, and instead moves towards vertical and diagonal pinstripes. Not quite as feminine as her Makany dresses, but we’re not disappointed.

(What do you think of Agi’s Fila look so far? Tell us!)

If you’re jonesin’: The pieces are not yet available through online retailers as of this posting, but of course we’ll alert you when it happens.

if you blinked, or szavay wearing her fila

December 31, 2007

szavay-fila-mondial.jpg

2008 is officially starting slow for Agnes Szavay, who’ll need to wait until next week to gain match experience after her 3-6, 7-5, 2-6 first-round loss to Yuliana Fedak at the Mondial Australian Women’s Hardcourts in Gold Coast.

Which is too bad, because TSF wishes her great successs… and we’re not going to lie: we were also jonesing to see plenty of her new Fila clothes. The little we saw of it left us unimpressed.

Of course, her partnership with Fila is still in its infancy. Hopefully, they’ll work with her to produce more feminine pieces, like her white Makany dresses from last season.

Bonus round: How much do you know about Gold Coast? Read up.

tsf interview: agnes szavay

December 20, 2007

Hungarian tennis player Agnes Szavay (pronounced SHAH-veye) had a whirlwind 2007 on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour. She started the year ranked 185 and catapulted herself into the 20th spot with two singles titles (Palermo, Beijing) and strong showings on the North American hardcourts (losing to Svetlana Kuznetsova both at the Pilot Pen final and the U.S. Open quarterfinals).

This success has not gone unnoticed; Ági, as she is affectionately called, was recently signed to a clothing deal by Fila. TSF talked to Ági over e-mail about her plans and goals for 2008, dealing with newfound celebrity, and — now that she’s signed with Fila — what will happen to those cute dresses from last season.

TSF: How did you go about choosing Fila as your sponsor?

Agnes Szavay: I really liked Fila’s style, I think it is very neat and fashionable. When they contacted me I did not hesitate to say yes. Fila’s designer is a very nice person and we can discuss about what I like to wear. I love working with them and I cannot wait to wear the new Australian (Open) outfit.

TSF: During the U.S. Open 2007, many people were impressed by the clothes you wore on the court. Who designed them? Were they made specifically for you?

AS: The clothes that I was wearing from July was designed especially for me by Marta Makany, who is a famous Hungarian designer. She has her own salon in Budapest called Nara. Marta will keep designing me more clothes but just off-court. I hope you will see those at player’s parties. Actually, I have already got two or three very nice dresses that I could wear at parties in Budapest. She is a very funny person and I’m very pleased to work with her.

TSF: What are your goals for 2008? Are you planning to participate in the Beijing Olympics?

AS: My goal is for the next season to keep my position and to reach the best 15. My childhood dream is to participate at the Olympics so I can promise you I will be definitely in Beijing to represent my country. It is an honor for me to be part of the Hungarian national team and I will work hard to show my best performance.

agnes szavay signs with fila

December 10, 2007

szavay-usopen07-090607.jpg

Making it big: Hungarian Agnes Szavay has cashed in on her 2007 success (two titles) by signing a clothing deal with Fila. She’ll debut the company’s new line at the 2008 Australian Open. The 70s-inspired tennis collection will have a red/black/white colorway. We’ll post pics when we get ‘em.

Collateral damage: Le sigh. This deal probably means the end of those Marta Makany-designed dresses (pictured above) that Szavay wore last season.

trophy watch: sunfeast is in the running

September 24, 2007

Congrats to the Sunfeast Open for being in the running for Most Innovative Trophy of 2007. Winner Maria Kirilenko received this traditional Indian painting (unveiled last week by Sania Mirza). Runner-up Mariya Koryttseva received her doorstop. The scoreline: 6-0, 6-2.

But the cabal behind all these stuffed tournament mascots needs to take a break. Don’t overdo it, people. Calcutta had the yellow sun, and Beijing had its own lime green version below…

In doubles, Vania King and Alla Kudryavtseva beat Koryttseva and Alberta Brianti 6-1, 6-4.

At the China Open, Jelena Jankovic got a little karmic lecture when she lost in the finals to current hot potato Agnes Szavay (again dressed in her cute Marta Makany outfit). Szavay came from behind to defeat Jankovic 5-7(7), 7-5, 6-2.

As you may remember, Jankovic took out Lindsay Davenport 6-3, 7-5 in the semis and accidentally hit her with a ball. How funny that it was Lindsay who bore the brunt, since she channeled her fair share of Eeyore back in the day.

And on the other side of the world, Tatiana Golovin gets back to being match tough by winning against Katarina Srebotnik 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 in Slovenia. I love the orange Lacoste skirt!

another look: agnes szavay + marta makany

September 6, 2007

The dream U.S. Open run of Agnes Szavay ended with her loss to Svetlana Kuznetsova in the quarters.

agnes szavay and marta makany

Above’s another look at her outfit designed by Hungarian designer Marta Makany. (See Agnes’ other outfits and Makany’s other designs.)

Even Tennis World’s Peter Bodo was impressed that she hasn’t chosen to wear off-the-rack Nike or adidas.

We love the braids, the halter, and the pleats!

fashion: agnes szavay + designer marta makany

August 31, 2007

At this year’s U.S. Open, Hungarian SEWTAer Agnes Szavay knocked off the hard-hitting Michaella Krajicek in the second round 7-6 (4), 6-3. She did so wearing the simple white dress she’s had all summer — an outfit designed by compatriot Marta Makany.

On the catwalk: Above are photos of of Makany’s ’07/’08 collection presented on Dec. 4, 2006 in Budapest. (And you can see clothes from previous collections in this video.)

More, more!: Szavay is next scheduled to face Russian Nadia Petrova. Let’s hope her success continues, if only so Makany can create more clothes for her. I’d like to see those layered pleat dresses on the court.

fashion focus: szavay in simple white

August 27, 2007

Hungarian qualifier Agnes Szavay looked amazing as she retired with a back injury at the fashion-forward Pilot Pen final. Congrats to her on almost winning the Tier II — it would’ve been a first for a qualifier.

All week she’s been wearing a label-less white sleeveless tank (left) and pleated skirt. She mixed it up at the final, donning a halter with a metal clip accent at the bust (middle).

Does anyone know who makes her clothes?

Also, on the right is a closer look at Svetlana‘s most current Fila outfit (which we pointed out last week). We really love the stripes!

trophy watch: more u.s. open series crystal

August 27, 2007

Trophy watch: The Pilot Pen tournament in New Haven doled out these cups to winners James Blake (7-5, 6-4 over Mardy Fish) and Svetlana Kuznetsova (who won when Hungarian qualifier Agnes Szavay retired at 6-4, 0-3).

Really, another ho hum trophy? Surely you could have found some other shape to sculpt. Why don’t you start here (or maybe here) for inspiration.

p.s. that’s a nice bracelet on James.
