amer’s twit pic: is that him?

March 27, 2010

We’re absolutely gaga over this adorable picture from Amer Delic‘s Twitter profile. But we’re wondering: is that really him? And if not, who the heck is it?! What a freakishly cute baby, too!

Rowdy nationalistic tennis fans became the talk of the Australian Open after today’s second-round matches. Paul-Henri Mathieu facedoff against Amer Delic (an American of Bosnian descent), Croat Marin Cilic defeated Serbian Janko Tipsarevic, and Delic is slated to face off against Serbian Nole Djokovic in the succeeding round. The tension today was enough to spur Delic to post a message on his website urging his fans to keep politics out of the the tournament.

In the Cilic/Tipsarevic match, spectators “were a little bit incorrect,” said Janko, “singing songs that had nothing to do with tennis because of the history [both countries] have with each other. I think two or three times I even said to the Serbian crowd, don’t call [Marin] names. It’s OK to cheer for me but don’t say bad things about him.”

“What I liked and was surprised about was there was no clapping between the first and second serve or no mobile phones ringing at an important part.” Good point, Janko. I’d take aggro-but-considerate douchebags over inconsiderate WASPs any day of the week.

By the way, I’m going to throw my hat in the ring for Melbourne ground security next year. I’m prepared to rough some of these guys up if things get out of hand.

CC day 4: andy and brooklyn’s puppy love, a new lacoste top, etc.

August 8, 2008

Fun times yesterday (Day 4) at the Countrywide Classic. I sat in on pressers for Carlos Moya and Amer Delic after their tough second round match, which Delic won 6-2, 6-7 (5), 7-6 (5).

1) Delic had surgery in April to fix a chronic sweating problem.

2) Even John McEnroe and Jim Courier were talking about the significance of that Federer/Nadal Wimbledon final. McEnroe said that we’ll learn a lot about Federer in the coming months (will he disappear ala Borg?), and that he’ll likely get more support from fans now that he’s a little more, uhm, human.

Meanwhile, Andy Roddick notched a routine win over drop shot-obsessed Serbian Dusan Vemic in the feature night match. Andy wore a black/white version of the Super Dry Stripe Polo from Lacoste‘s latest line. Fiancee Brooklyn Decker was there to cheer him on, of course, and we learn in his post-match interview with the skinny-legged Justin Gimelstob (man, what retirement can do to muscles!) that the couple now has a puppy.

Buy: Lacoste Super Dry Stripe Polo, Steward Blue/White, $95.00.

tuesday night treats at the countrywide classic

July 17, 2007

From the frontlines: Well, far behind the baselines, really. I was at UCLA tonight watching James Blake brush off his rusty game to beat Alexander Peya in two sets. Turns out that was just a warm-up for the upset of top seed Fernando Gonzalez by hometown fave Zack Fleishman. This is the former Bruin’s best scalp in five years of playing the Tour’s UCLA stop. He was blasting his forehands just as well as Gonzo. I hope Fernando’s okay… it looked like he was having some right arm trouble.

Sex selling sex: there were some delicious fellas hawking tickets for the upcoming ULTIMATE TENNIS CELEBRATION!!!! EastWest Bank Classic in Carson. They’ve got a decent promo, too: $20 gets you two tickets to an early round match PLUS an “I (heart) SHARAPOVA” or “I (heart) SERENA” shirt. (Guess which shirt I picked.)

Favabean sighting?: I think I saw TSF reader in the stands behind me. Section 16, Chris — was that you?

Others I saw: Amer Delic after winning his doubles match, Paul Goldstein after winning his singles match, Robert Kendrick battling Wesley Whitehouse in the Grandstand Court, and Serena Williams sitting five seats over from Kevin Garnett, both watching Blake.

who’s going to make a move on grass?

Who do you think will make their move on grass this year?

My picks: Amelie Mauresmo, Justine Henin, Serena Williams, Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, Tomas Berdych

woe is carlos moya

carlos moya - roma

Poor Carlos Moya, throwing his racket down in frustration during last week’s Masters Series Rome. Is it because:

a) he lost his first round match against Marcos Baghadatis 2-6, 3-6

or

b) he came to the party dressed in the same Nike outfit as three other gals.

I’m going to say “b.”

I understand that Nike is trying to drive a point home with this line of clothing. But having four different guys photographed in it has crossed into oversaturation. If I was Carlos, I’d be annoyed. Actually, I’d be more annoyed if I was James Blake or Gael Monfils. They had to play each other in the first round while wearing the same outfit.

(And this is just the black/white version we’re talking about. Rafa Nadal has the monopoly on the teal/black version for now.)
