dunlop bounces back: “all balls aren’t created equal”

May 24, 2011

Odd man out: The new Babolat balls being used at this year’s French Open has gathered some buzz in the interview room, with players griping about their speed (faster) and heaviness (“harder”), and with Babolat responding that they haven’t noticed a difference. The issue’s more apparent since this is now the only major red clay tournament that doesn’t use Dunlop for balls (the FFT chose to end its relationship with Dunlop, instead choosing Babolat).

Now Dunlop’s chimed in to negate claims by the FFT that the ball specifications are exactly the same. “It is impossible to replicate our balls and we felt it was important to clarify this fact given the statement from the FFT and media interest in the matter,” said Barry Leach, Managing Director of Dunlop. Should the FFT decide they would like to provide the ball consistency that the players desire then we would welcome the opportunity to make it happen”.

That’s shotmaking face is pretty intense, but I’m not looking up there anyway.

Santiago Giraldo lost to top seed Rafa Nadal in the first round of the Rakuten Japan Open in Tokyo. Up next for Nadal is Milos Raonic.

Draw: See how the rest of the seeds are doing — including Andy Roddick, Tsonga, Melzer, Monfils — by browsing the bracket.

davis cup: colombian color coordination

September 19, 2010

Babolat and Li Ning did a wonderful job bringing together the Colombian Davis Cup as they host the USA at the World Group Play-offs this weekend in Bogota. Santiago Giraldo defeated Sam Querrey 6-2, 6-4, 7-5, in the second rubber and is now serving at 6-5 in the fifth set against Mardy Fish. (The Americans are up 2-1, so Giraldo needs a win to give Colombia a chance to advance.)

More: All the tie info available here.

Yellow, red, and blue: See another shot of Santiago’s crew (Babolat) and doubles player Carlos Salamanca in Li Ning after the cut…

nadia petrova in bali, still with babolat

September 9, 2008

Nadia Petrova is playing at the Commonwealth Bank Tennis Classic in Bali this week.

Is Babolat her official clothing sponsor yet? Does anyone know?

Scoreline: As the tournament’s fourth seed, she defeated Aiko Nakamura 6-3, 6-1 to advance to the second round.

when in montreal, do as the french do

July 29, 2008

Nadia Petrova has switched from being a form for Venus‘ EleVen line to wearing a mustard top from Babolat at the 2008 Rogers Cup. She beat local Marie-Eve Pelletier 6-0, 6-1 in the first round.

Babs isn’t exactly known for its clothes, so we’ll take what we can get — piping detail, graphic on the lower front — from this French gearmaker.

A little bit of Italy, a little bit of France…

Move over, Karl Lagerfeld; your Chanel stenciled tennis racquets are no longer the only ones for the glam set. French tennis company Babolat recently announced that they’ve partnered with EA7 — that’s Emporio Armani‘s performance line — to design their own gear. The oversize stick, with its 100-square-inch head, incorporates the brand’s current white/silver/black colorway (which can also be seen on Filippo Volandri, who wears EA7 on the court).

Buy: The racquet is available for $345 at all Emporio Armani stores. And FYI, there is only one grip size (“for medium-sized hands,” said the salesman at the store on Broadway). It also comes with a cover.

Another look: Take a peek at Volandri wearing the Spring 2008 EA7 wear (plus his classy accessories) at last week’s Copa Telmex in Buenos Aires after the cut…

fashion flashback: andy roddick’s lacoste bag

Andy Roddick was only lugging around a Babolat bag at this year’s Wimbledon, but he’s gone all fashionista on us before: above is a photo of Andy’s white duffel from two years ago.

I’ve seen a version of it up close at my local Lacoste shop and contemplated picking one up. It’s no longer available online, but I found others:

That’s the Retro Street tennis bag, the Sport Retro tennis bag, and the Summer Terry beach bag — all available at macys.com. Which one’s your fave? Tell us.
