jelena, don’t fall to the dark side!

April 2, 2008

Okay. I must admit that I had a change of heart about Jelena Jankovic‘s Bjork-at-the-Oscars dress once I found out the context; basically, it’s a gown crafted by Kelly Kealy Mayton entirely out of cell phone parts (brilliant!) and she was to wear it accompanied by Dancing with the Stars alum Helio Castroneves.

But I’m sticking to my guns about her shopping with Bethanie Mattek at bebe. Janks, who knows what kind of fashion tips you’ll pick up even by just breathing the same air as her? Stay away!

Folks, you might have already seen the American’s silver sequined singles dress, but not many of you got a chance to see this pink prosty-worthy outfit:

Bethanie Mattek - Indian Wells 2008

She wore this playing doubles with Sania Mirza at Indian Wells. While Sania was busy covering most of her torso in that adidas Edge Cap Sleeve top, Bethanie was busy busting out. This was certainly one of the highlights of my trip to the desert.

From the back: See the dress from the back after the cut…

Monogrammed visor? Check. Random red wristband? Check.

Sequins on her Bebe Sport top and skirt? Check.

Falling in the first round (to Alla Kudryavtseva 2-6, 1-6 in the first round of the Pacific Life Open)? Check.

I’m looking forward to seeing what you’ll wear at the Sony Ericsson Open, Bethanie Mattek!

open court: a bethanie mattek sighting

If it wasn’t for Stephanie MylesOpen Court, we wouldn’t have known about Bethanie Mattek‘s tennis-appropriate (!!!) Bebe Sport outfit as the American went through the doubles draw in Melbourne.

Mattek paired with Jelena Jankovic to upset the fifth-seeded team of Nathalie Dechy and Dinara Safina in the first round, and fell two rounds later to the tenth seeds, Anabel Medina Garrigues and Virginia Ruano Pascual.

bethanie mattek: it’s finally over!

September 4, 2007

You know when you watch those horror movies and you think the villain’s dead but he’s really not, and he’s just laying still long enough to lull the victims into letting their guards down before he strikes again?

Fashion JUGG-ernaut Bethanie Mattek has done the exact same thing to my eyes at this year’s U.S. Open. I thought we’d gotten rid of her after the loss to Peer in singles, but I forgot that she was in the doubles draw with Sania Mirza.

Their second-round match found Mattek flaunting her latest Bebe Sport outfit, this time an ensemble more conservative than her golden disaster (but still low-cut enough to give this ballkid a peek). They defeated second seeds Lisa Raymond and Sam Stosur 2-6, 7-5, 7-5.

And today she wears this.

I. have. no. more. words. Mirza looked good in red Lotto, but Mattek comes out wrapped in a dead leopard. They went down to the Taiwanese team of Yung-Jan Chan and Chia-Jung Chuang 3-6, 6-3, 4-6.

With the loss, the Bebe dresses have taken stakes through the heart. And then got pushed into a vat of molten lava. The fight is over. Good riddance. (Do you agree? Tell us.)

mattek slides out in silver

September 1, 2007

In her secound-round loss to 18th seed Shahar Peer, the Cher of tennis — Bethanie Mattek — wore a slightly more tame silver top and headband from the Bebe Sport collection.

We’re all probably better off, but I was really curious to see what the other two outfits were… More metallic shades, perhaps?

bethanie mattek shines

August 28, 2007

That’s Bethanie Mattek playing her first round match at the 2007 U.S. Open. This shiny gold dress is relatively tame for her (she once wore an argyle cowboy hat on court), but in a good way. It’s a great balance between letting out her inner Elton John and dressing like the other great tennis fashion icons.

Update: All of Mattek’s four Open outfits are from the Eva Longoria-endorsed Bebe Sport collection. (The Star-Ledger)

What do you think of her gold get-up? Tell us!
