garden party

March 4, 2009

It wasn’t exactly red carpet glam on Monday night at the Madison Square Garden, but there were plenty of faces (and outfits) that came out for the Billie Jean King Cup.  Take in some more tennis shots and enjoy a few off-court ones, as well.

bethanie mattek: “All I knew was I didn’t want to wear white”

January 22, 2009

Richard Pagliaro of Tennis Week asked Bethanie Mattek about how her boo, Justin Sands, proposed to her; how she thinks marriage’ll change her life and career; and to look ahead to her return to the SEWTA. Oh yes, and he asked her about that Romona Keveza gown she wore to the wedding:

“All I knew was I didn’t want to wear white… I was initially going to wear something vibrant or colorful and have a very relaxed wedding with the guys wearing linen pants and have a beach theme. The owner told me ‘I’ve got this evening gown you might like it.’ So I tried it on — it was the first dress I tried on — and it was black and fit perfectly and I liked it. So the wedding got a little more formal and the guys had to wear nice pants, but it was really relaxed and fantastic.”

And they have united to fight the forces of fashion:

“It’s funny because now Justin will often pick out the clothes I wear on court and sometimes he’ll say ‘You should wear this….’”

Justin — we’ve got our eyes on you!

there’s always broadway…

bethanie-mattek-wedding09

Bethanie Mattek is totally like the Michael Jordan of tennis fashion. She can be anywhere on the court (even off it) and hit her mark every time. Even on her deathbed she’ll come up with stuff like this!

By the way, Ms. Mattek, if tennis doesn’t work out, there’s always Broadway.

Thanks to Stephanie Myles over at Open Court for digging up the deets (and pics) of Mattek’s November 2009 wedding to insurance man Justin Sands.

She wore a black Romona Keveza dress and some zebra-print stilettos from Marciano (hmm, nothing from her tennis clothing sponsor, bebe?). And her 5.5 carat engagement ring almost doubled in weight with her 3.5 carat wedding band — made with black and white diamonds to resemble zebra stripes.

Other minutiae: She skipped the Aussie Open to get hitched. When she returns on the court, you’ll see her name on the scoreboard as Bethanie Mattek-Sands.

Mazel tov, Bethanie!

blame adidas for mattek’s current state + is nike waiting in the wings?

June 4, 2008

Through an interview with Bill Macattee and French Open Tonight, Bethanie Mattek offers some insight on why she dresses how she does. adidas, you’re to blame!

I was at the Australian Open a few years ago, and I actually got cut from the adidas team. I had all adidas stuff but I said, ‘Well I’m not going to wear it, they just cut me from the team.’ I basically just wore out there what I went to dinner with or went out dancing in… It’s part of my personality. I dress kind of funky off the court too.

I feel a little better now. She’s just working out some abandonment issues. The pink dress is an eff you to her old sponsor!

Over soon? Apparently she’s in talks with Nike as a clothing sponsor. As much as I rag on her, I think she would look AMAZING in their collections. Nike is very boobs-friendly.

jelena, don’t fall to the dark side!

April 2, 2008

Okay. I must admit that I had a change of heart about Jelena Jankovic‘s Bjork-at-the-Oscars dress once I found out the context; basically, it’s a gown crafted by Kelly Kealy Mayton entirely out of cell phone parts (brilliant!) and she was to wear it accompanied by Dancing with the Stars alum Helio Castroneves.

But I’m sticking to my guns about her shopping with Bethanie Mattek at bebe. Janks, who knows what kind of fashion tips you’ll pick up even by just breathing the same air as her? Stay away!

Folks, you might have already seen the American’s silver sequined singles dress, but not many of you got a chance to see this pink prosty-worthy outfit:

Bethanie Mattek - Indian Wells 2008

She wore this playing doubles with Sania Mirza at Indian Wells. While Sania was busy covering most of her torso in that adidas Edge Cap Sleeve top, Bethanie was busy busting out. This was certainly one of the highlights of my trip to the desert.

From the back: See the dress from the back after the cut…

I’m looking forward to seeing what you’ll wear at the Sony Ericsson Open, Bethanie Mattek!

open court: a bethanie mattek sighting

If it wasn’t for Stephanie MylesOpen Court, we wouldn’t have known about Bethanie Mattek‘s tennis-appropriate (!!!) Bebe Sport outfit as the American went through the doubles draw in Melbourne.

Mattek paired with Jelena Jankovic to upset the fifth-seeded team of Nathalie Dechy and Dinara Safina in the first round, and fell two rounds later to the tenth seeds, Anabel Medina Garrigues and Virginia Ruano Pascual.

spotted: vince spadea’s backpack

September 11, 2007

At this year’s RCA Championships in Indianapolis, American (and fashion, ahem, trailblazer) Vince Spadea was sporting this lovely leopard-print tennis bag.

Do he and Bethanie Mattek shop at the same hooker palace or what?

bethanie mattek: it’s finally over!

September 4, 2007

You know when you watch those horror movies and you think the villain’s dead but he’s really not, and he’s just laying still long enough to lull the victims into letting their guards down before he strikes again?

Fashion JUGG-ernaut Bethanie Mattek has done the exact same thing to my eyes at this year’s U.S. Open. I thought we’d gotten rid of her after the loss to Peer in singles, but I forgot that she was in the doubles draw with Sania Mirza.

Their second-round match found Mattek flaunting her latest Bebe Sport outfit, this time an ensemble more conservative than her golden disaster (but still low-cut enough to give this ballkid a peek). They defeated second seeds Lisa Raymond and Sam Stosur 2-6, 7-5, 7-5.

And today she wears this.

I. have. no. more. words. Mirza looked good in red Lotto, but Mattek comes out wrapped in a dead leopard. They went down to the Taiwanese team of Yung-Jan Chan and Chia-Jung Chuang 3-6, 6-3, 4-6.

With the loss, the Bebe dresses have taken stakes through the heart. And then got pushed into a vat of molten lava. The fight is over. Good riddance. (Do you agree? Tell us.)

mattek slides out in silver

September 1, 2007

In her secound-round loss to 18th seed Shahar Peer, the Cher of tennis — Bethanie Mattek — wore a slightly more tame silver top and headband from the Bebe Sport collection.

We’re all probably better off, but I was really curious to see what the other two outfits were… More metallic shades, perhaps?

fashion: peeling bethanie mattek’s layers

August 31, 2007

Like with an onion, I’m crying as I peel off the layers of Bethanie Mattek‘s gold U.S. Open outfit by Bebe Sport. The pictures I’d posted a few days ago didn’t show the mesh detail on the torso.

Jesus.

bethanie mattek shines

August 28, 2007

That’s Bethanie Mattek playing her first round match at the 2007 U.S. Open. This shiny gold dress is relatively tame for her (she once wore an argyle cowboy hat on court), but in a good way. It’s a great balance between letting out her inner Elton John and dressing like the other great tennis fashion icons.

Update: All of Mattek’s four Open outfits are from the Eva Longoria-endorsed Bebe Sport collection. (The Star-Ledger)

What do you think of her gold get-up? Tell us!

short balls friday: grass in NYC, open call for ballkids, racquet stringers, etc.

July 6, 2007

A stringer on stringers: Here’s a New York Times profile on racquet stringers Nate Ferguson and Ron Yu. Interesting tidbit: “(Roger) Federer usually requests three different tensions: high, medium and low. Each racket has three little stickers telling him which it is. He changes rackets every time the balls are replaced by a fresh batch — after the first seven games, then every nine games after that. There is an exception: Federer does not want to serve with fresh strings and fresh balls. If the ball swap is going to occur on his turn to serve, he changes rackets the game before.”

Ballkids at the U.S. Open: The audition process is arduous, the job is taxing (throwing balls overhand across the whole court!), but unlike the folks at other Slams, they get paid. (via newsday.com)

fashion: mattek tames her dress, wins a title

May 14, 2007

mattek-florida-today.jpg Bethanie Mattek won the MIMA Foundation/USTA Pro Tennis Classic yesterday (her first one in 18 months).

Florida Today reports that she’s been working with her coach to improve her strokes and playing style. “I see (tennis) now as a chess match,” she says. Good for her. More players need to realize that blowing someone off the court isn’t the only way to play.

It looks like she’s working on her outfits, too. That teal bandana/ruffled skirt look is an improvement from last year’s Wimbledon tunic ensemble, and from that argyle cowboy hat(!) she wore at the U.S. Open. Now she’s at least in Guga Kuerten/Arnaud Clement/Vince Spadea territory — wild, but palatable.

it finally happened

March 23, 2007

Tree huggers rejoice. If you ever thought that glowsticks go straight to a landfill, fear not: they found a second home in Miami this week.

Yep, Night Tennis finally happened, and it pretty much looked exactly as expected. Click here for photos of Bethanie Mattek in her blacklight attire.

If this is how she plans to bump up interest in tennis, then she is sadly mistaken. Let’s go back to the drawing board, eh?

I am very curious to know how Night Tennis will pan out in Thailand. That is, if they’re still even considering it at this point. If they back out, it’s cool. Ridding yourself of crazy ideas seems to be all the rage right now.

Ran across this eBay auction today. That needs to be someone’s outfit for Wimbledon.

Wait. It’s already been done?
