Grigor Dimitrov barters tennis lessons for some turntable tips from Chicago-based DJ duo Crossfader King. Playlist: The McQueen-loving Bulgarian listens to a lot of hip-hop (Lil Wayne and 2Pac, he mentions). How’d Grigs do? Check out the video.

grigor dimitrov is a-okay in munich

April 27, 2011

So there are times when we are okay showing you a non-shirtless Grigor Dimitrov, like this week, when he upset fourth seed Marcos Baghdatis in the second round of the BMW Open — 3-6, 7-6 (6), 6-2. (FYI, highest seed left in the Munich draw is now No. 3 Cilic.)

Nike: All those ATPers not named Roger or Rafa are wearing either the honeycombed Movement pieces or the striped collection (“Challenger”), worn by Grigor.

Buy: Nike Men’s Challenger Speed Stripe Crew; in white/grey, white/blue, and blue colorways; $50; tennisexpress.com.

Slow day over here. Thank god, otherwise I’d never’ve gotten around to linking to these pics of Grigor Dimitrov from 2010 in Bangkok, where he went on a tear and ended up with back-to-back titles. (Photos: Enjoy!)

2011: Grigor’s won a Challenger (Cherbourg) and last month reached a career-high No. 70 in the ATP rankings. He entered this week’s Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell and immediately lost 4-6, 1-6 to Juan Monaco (after being up 4-1 in that first set). Draw: Here’s how the rest of the guys are doing. (The field includes Nadal, Soderling, Ferrer, Melzer, Monfils, and Almagro.)

like we needed more reasons to love grigor dimitrov

September 28, 2010

Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov has given us plenty of reasons to love him (we count six, maybe eight), but here’s the nail on the coffin: His favorite designer? Alexander McQueen. (See the Q&A here.)

BTW, congrats to Grigor for cracking the ATP Top 150 — he’s now at 136 — after winning back-to-back-to-back Challengers this year. (ATP: Grigor’s stats).

And speaking of McQueen, Sarah Burton, who’s succeeded Mr. McQueen (RIP) as creative director, presented the Spring 2011 men’s collection this past June in Milan. The women’s collection will show in Paris this week. One thing we’ll know not to expect from Burton are the fashion house’s infamous, over-the-top presentations. “That was very much [his] territory — the spectacular show,” Burton told Elle.

grigor dimitrov: clothed, so no cigar

Not until he has to: Russian Grigor Dimitrov (clothed, le sigh) lost to third seed Gilles Simon in the AEGON Championships Round of 16 in two tiebreak sets.

For this Wimbledon stretch, adidas has its Competition collection in red, blue, and white. I guess Grigor will stay as far away from the all-white rule until he absolutely has to follow it!

Buy: Check out the goods here.

grigor dimitrov shirtless? close, but not quite

Dmitry, Dimitrov: The D’s did their part to put on a show at Marseille’s Open 13, with Feliciano Lopez beating Tursunov 7-6 (4), 7-6 (1) to reach the quarters, and Dimitrov falling to French fave Gilles Simon 6-4, 3-6, 5-7 in the first round.

(Even off the court, these two are still working it. Enjoy the pic.)

Meanwhile, munchkin Arnaud Clement used the home court advantage to down Marat Safin 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 in his opening match in Marseille; he lost to German Mischa Zverev in the second round. And Safin’s fellow swan-songer, Fabrice Santoro, bowed out in the first round to Julien Benneteau 6-4, 4-6, 2-6.

Is Grigor on your list? It’s probably about time to update my list — or at least expand it — to make some, uhm, accomodations.

Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov is officially on TSF radar after the Bulgarian teenager took a set off Rafael Nadal in the second round of the ABN AMRO World Indoor Tournament.

Dimitrov turned pro last year after taking the junior Wimbledon and U.S. Open titles. He’s currently ranked in the 400s. In case you’re wondering, he turns 18 in May.

More: A few more photos of Grigor after the cut…

Venus on steroids: As part of yesterday’s presser, Venus Williams was asked to comment on the recent controversy surrounding A-Rod‘s use of performance-enhancing drugs:

“Umm, you know, I think tennis is a completely different sport,” she said.

“You have to hold your nerve, and I don’t know if there’s a drug for that.” Brilliant.

Meanwhile, the guys of the ATP are having a hard time adjusting to tour’s new drug testing protocol, being managed by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).

The stringent rules requires anyone in the top 50 to report where they’ll be for one hour a day, making them accessible to drug testers. Miss three pop quizzes in 18 months and you’re slapped with a two-year ban.

Rafael Nadal, among others, has voiced his dislike for the new system, which was adopted in order to keep tennis’ status as an Olympic sport. “They make you feel like a criminal,” he said at the ABN AMRO this week. “Not even my mother knows where I am every day. It is very difficult to know where you are going to be tomorrow especially in a sport like tennis.”

Besides, winning an Olympic medal can’t get you an Aston Martin, right?

Kick him while he’s down: Don’t put away the Kleenex box just yet, Roger — your former coach, Pete Lungren, is already molding Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov to be better than you. Would you like to talk smack about him, too? But it’s okay, Pete Sampras can feel your pain.

Fanatics can fight fires: Bid on a lot of tennis caps signed by Roger and Rafa — plus a poster signed by all four singles finalists from the 2009 Australian Open — in an auction by Fox Sports Australian that benefits Victorian brushfire victims. Bidding starts Friday; more info here.

BBC’s Wimbledon well dries up: The BBC will tone down its slam-related entertainment in light of the recent economic downturn. Great — the queues at the food stands will be that much longer. (OTB)
