the latest young scalp: the oldest man left in the draw

September 5, 2011

The oldest man left standing by the third round of the 2011 U.S. Open men’s singles event turned out to be the latest scalp of Donald Young. The American had the crowd behind him as he defeated the 24th seed Juan Ignacio Chela 7-5, 6-4, 6-3, and Young’ll face Andy Murray in the fourth round (joining compatriots Andy Roddick, Mardy Fish, and John Isner in the sweet 16). See the rest of the men’s draw here.

But before we bid Chela farewell, a look at his spotted crew from Topper Argentina, a refreshing use of circles in what has been a sea of solids and straight lines at this year’s event.

…or are you just happy to see me?

March 24, 2011

Jarmila Groth and Juan Ignacio Chela dropped by the Miami Metro Zoo before they begin competing at the Sony Ericsson Open in Key Biscayne, Fla. Groth, the 28th seed, will open her 2011 Miami run with a match against Yaroslava Shvedova, who took out Sara Errani 6-3, 5-7, 7-6 (5). Groth shares the bottom half of the draw with Clijsters, Vika, and Schiavone, among others. And on the men’s side, Chela will play the winner of the Feli Lopez/Berankis match. He has a potential fourth-round match against Rafael Nadal.

trophy watch: simon’s egg, kleybanova’s unveiling, etc.

September 27, 2010

It doesn’t really matter to us who ends up winning that trophy from the Open de Moselle in Metz, as long as it gets a photograph taken once a year. Of course it doesn’t hurt that daddy Gilles Simon, who took out Mischa Zverev 6-3, 6-2, is the one in the picture.

fila stripes take a break in the desert

March 17, 2008

The boys of Fila shed their stripes for their two-week party in the California desert. All are wearing color block shirts from the Heritage Group:

Janko Tipsarevic - Indian Wells

Janko Tipsarevic crashed out of the first round. He took the first set tiebreak 7-1 but lost the next two 6-7 (6), 4-6. Both he and Marat Safin are still on my “must-see” list.

Marin Cilic - Indian Wells

In one of the later day matches from Sunday, gigantor Marin Cilic lost to compatriot Ivan Ljubicic. The winning scoreline for the 23rd seed (my, how the mighty have fallen!): 7-6(7) 7-5.

Dmitry Tursunov - Indian Wells

And the bearded Dima lost to Juan Ignacio Chela 7-6 (7-1), 6-7 (6-8), 4-6 in the second round. I saw Dmitry hit for a little bit at one of the practice courts.

Buy: Fila Heritage colorblock crewneck, $45. The rest of their current tennis gear here.

Bonus round: More pictures from Janko’s first round match after the cut…
