oh, mirka!

She’s no Serena: Unlike Serena Williams, second lady Mirka Vavrinec isn’t ready to downgrade just quite yet. Here she is toting a Louis Vuitton Shimmer Comete while watching her boo Roger Federer rub out Juan Martin del Potro in an embarassing 80-minute quarterfinal match. Del Potro, the 20-year-old Argentine, won only only 14 points total in the second and third sets.

“The last couple of games [were] not that much fun,” Federer said after the match. “You want to almost put him out of his misery because you know how tough it is for him to come back.”

This 6-3, 6-0, 6-0 performance brushes off any doubt that Federer is ready to face Andy Roddick in the semis. (Roger flubbed his previous match, needing almost 3.5 hours — and five sets — to take down Tomas Berdych.)

Buy: Louis Vuitton Monogram Shimmer Comete, $2,260, 866-VUITTON.

fashion focus: clavicles and class for nike’s holiday ’08 collection

October 7, 2008

A quick look: The men’s stuff keep us bored, but the women continue with the refined stylish designs that started with that Serena Bow Dress from the U.S. Open ’07 and the Masha librarian look at the YEC in December.

First, the mens…

A ho-hum collection still featuring the current fireworks/superpower graphics on the Dri-FIT Power tank — the one currently sported by Juan Martin del Potro — and contrast inserts in the Power and Advantage lines. Colors are University (light blue), Obsidian (navy), Comet (red), black, and white.

What we do like is this Federer Master Polo, with the placket stretching all the way down the front — reminiscent of a skinny-tied schoolboy uniform. (Also, it takes us back to one of Patrick Rafter‘s weirder shirts from Wimbledon ’04.)

What do you think of the Master Polo? Tell us!

Dress up your clavicles: The designers in Portland are giving much love to collarbones for this year-end collection, placing the swoosh super-high up on the Resort Polos and the accenting the Heritage Jacket with a similarly placed horizontal detail on the right chest.

Buy: Master Polo, $65; Resort Polo, in White/Dark Obsidian and Matte Silver/Anthracite, $60; Heritage Jacket, Black and White, $60.

Meanwhile, the women are pulling off more classy-but-sexy outfits with their pieces for the season. The standard issue Athlete Dress overwhelms with its constrast straps and collar detail, but makes up for it with a sexy mesh layer for a nightie-like effect. And they’ve brought in the fall versions of the Athlete Short Sleeve top, with its novel v-neck and body-mapped mosaic designs. (The latter is what Li Na wore when she toppled top seed Serena in Stuttgart last week.)

Sharapova: For the holidays, Nike blessed Masha with simple separates. Thick pleats and a wide contrast band on the hem are order of the day for her Day Skirt, and the matching top has a corresponding contrast block across the bust.

Serena: What the Court Tank lacks in detail is made up for by the tiered ruffles (with contrast hem, of course) on the Court Skirt.

Resort: And the Resort Tee, with its metallic and whimsical tennis racquet print, looks like it came right out of the Fila Japan lookbook. (Trust me, that’s a good thing!)

Buy: Resort Tee, Charcoal/Berry, Matte Silver/Marina, and white, $30; Sharapova Day Tank, $65; Sharapova Day Skirt, $65; Court Tank, $60; and Court Skirt, $60; Sharapova and Court separates available in Black, White/Aqua Grey, Berry/Light Taupe, and Aqua Grey/Black.

davis cup: if nole won’t do it….

…then Juan Martin del Potro can take care of the Davis Cup shirtless celebration.

davis cup: Nike and del Potro combine powers

September 19, 2008

Juan Martin del Potro nudged Argentina into a 2-0 lead against Russia by beating top 10er Nikolay Davydenko 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 (this, after Igor Andreev lost to Nalbandian). Del Potro has now won 23 out of his last 24 matches, picking up four titles along the way.

We give props to Nike for using a deeper shade of blue on the double-wide terry wristbands (compared to the headband), and making the color pop even more with that purple swoosh.

And in line with the rest of their summer/fall ’08 gear, there’s mesh (in tribal/tattoo form) on the shirt’s back.

Into the weekend: The boys will duke it out in reverse singles a day after cheering on the doubles match between Canas/Calleri and Kunitsyn/Tursunov. At least after last year’s Portland debacle, Tarpischev knows better than to put Kolya in play on a Saturday!

Show some love: The Argentine version of the tennis pieces aren’t available for mass consumption, but consider giving your gaucho some love via this Country Split Windrunner Jacket, $100; or the Hyperdunk shoes — both released in time for the Beijing Olympics.

davis cup: I’m craving a sandwich

September 18, 2008

Juan Martin del Potro and the scot-free Nikolay Davydenko will meet in the second rubber of this weekend’s Argentina vs. Russia Davis Cup semifinal tie in Buenos Aires. As much as I’d like Kolya to win, this is the en fuego JM. Playing on his home turf. Sorry, Russia!

By the way, can someone give Nikolay a smaller jacket so it doesn’t look like he’s wearing a dress?
