Seles-tial sightings: Monica Seles‘ Q rating is on the up-and-up this week. First, she’s consistenly mentioned throughout the last 10 days as one of Novak Djokovic‘s tennis idols. And today she attended the Laureus Sports Awards in Barcelona (Picture here. Lookin good!). Next week, she plays in an exhibition match against Martina Navratilova at the River Oaks Country Club in Houston. (via Monica Seles Site)
British Davis Cup Team full a’ Scots: In the realm of UK tennis, one more player to watch out for. His name is Jamie Baker. (via Evening Times)
New agency forms: In the spirit of perpetuating the mistreatment — abuse, even — of punctuation marks (see: Macy*s and the movie Face/Off), J-Cap‘s former rep teams up with a FILA and Reebok vet to launch a new sports and entertainment marketing agency called [PERRYBURCH]; they already have WTT as a client. Good luck to them and their square brackets. (from Examiner.com)
Billie Jean King’s men are hustling, too: Not to be outdone by all the recent activity of the other out gay retired tennis player, Billie Jean is making the rounds, earlier this month accepting the Alan King Passion Award at the Pacific Life Open, and today announcing her endorsement of Hillary Rodham Clinton as president. Clinton, on King: “[She is] an inspiration to women everywhere [who] spent her life breaking down barriers, and I’m honored to have her support.” (via The San Francisco Examiner)
Sharapova, the ambassador: The Telegraph published a story about what motivated Maria Sharapova to become a U.N. ambassador. (It was Chernobyl.) Here’s her take on philanthropy:
“The coolest thing about making money is that you are able to give back,” Sharapova said. “You have the opportunity to help people. You can only buy so many cars, so many houses, so many dresses and so many pairs of shoes, but it’s not going to make you happy. But helping to save lives is incredible. I can’t even begin to explain how amazing that is.”

It’s Wednesday: So it’s time to read — on your break — Sports Illustrated columnist Jon Wertheim’s mailbag. You should read it every week.
Laureus Awards Presenters: Oscar winner Morgan Freeman and Desperate Housewives stars Eva Longoria and Kyle MacLachlan, along with Argentinian supermodel Valeria Mazza and Spanish flamenco dancer Joaquin Cortes, are all scheduled to present at the Laureus World Sports Awards. Tennis players nominated include: Federer, Henin, Mauresmo, Sharapova, and Serena. (via the Southern Daily Echo)

The Laureus Academy, made up of the greatest athletes in the world, announced the nominations for its annual Laureus Awards. Tennis, being an international sport, received a few nominations, including Federer vying for male athlete of the year with buddy Tiger Woods, and Henin, Mauresmo, and Sharapova taking three of the five spots for female athlete of the year. If you’re going to pick the top crop from tennis in 2006, that sounds about right.
And the media gives doubles its due this week. CNNSI still has Lisa Raymond’s first column up on the main tennis page, and ESPN published a nice profile on tennis player-cum-golfer Scott Draper. I’m including it after the cut.
