practice makes perfect: stan wawrinka

September 7, 2011

Buy: Lacoste Geometric Graphic Tee, $60.

No. 2 in the 2nd: Switzerland’s second-in-command, Stan Wawrinka, became Donald Young‘s first upset when he lost to the American 6-7 (7-9), 6-3, 6-2, 3-6, 6-7 (1-7) in the second round. Wawrinka, the tournament’s 14th seed, will be playing alongside Roger Federer in their Davis Cup World Group Playoff tie against Australia later this month. Meanwhile, Young plays Andy Murray today for a spot in the quarterfinals (if the weather allows him).

shirtless: janko tipsarevic

September 5, 2011

Uhm, hi: Some practice pics we found of Janko Tipsarevic from this year’s U.S. Open. Lots of other images if you follow the links. (Please do!)

Up in the air: We really didn’t know which side to root for as we watched today’s 4th round match between Janko and Juan Carlos Ferrero. On the one hand, you want the Serb to break through and get past his first-week rut at the Slams. On the other, you want to give Juanqui a last hurrah before his impending retirement.

No upset: The 20th seeded Tipsarevic prevailed after a looong match — 7-5, 6-7 (3), 7-5, 6-2 — to reach the quarterfinals, making this his career-best performance at any major. Let’s hope he’s content getting that far because his next opponent is Novak Djokovic. (Draw: See how the quarterfinals are coming together for the men.)

practice makes perfect: roddick and fish

September 4, 2011

Keeping it cool: Isn’t it nice to have an un-cranky American be at the top of the sport? Perhaps Fish‘s reign as the No. 1 Yank will take the edge off for Andy

Regardless, both chaps are still in contention for the 2011 U.S. Open title, with Roddick defeating Benneteau for a spot in the fourth round (he plays David Ferrer next) while Mardy is set to play Tsonga for a spot in the quarters. How crazy would it be if they both got through their halves of the draw and met in the final? (Bracket: See how the men’s field is stacking up.)

Nole switched to his French Open kit during the warm-up tourneys leading to the year’s second major, so no need to rehash (here it is, in case ya need a refresher). So instead, here’s a few looks at his practice gear.

BTW: Nole has dropped only one set (to del Potro) in his run to the semis, which included a retirement from Victor Hanescu and a walkover against Fognini (who injured himself in that marathon vs. Montanes). Djokovic will play Roger Federer tomorrow.

Too much red! Aside from this olive green tee, a Stepanek-esque polo/shirt ensemble after the cut…

Roger Federer has reached the fourth round of the 2011 French Open after brushing aside Janko Tipsarevic 6-1, 6-4, 6-3. Even from a different perspective — i.e., the buzz words these days are “Nadal” and “Nole” — it’s safe to say that this man can still play some good, clean ball: so far this week, he’s used his efficient serve to rack up only two break points after three rounds of play.

practice makes perfect: “i’d hit that”

April 6, 2011

Now that she’s with Wilson, Melanie Oudin needn’t worry about pumping herself up with mantras about courage and self-confidence. A little double entendre never hurt anyone, right? She — along with other players in the Wilson stable including Anne Keothavong (pictured) — has been wearing practice tees printed with the phrase “I’d Hit That.” Available to the masses in time for the U.S. Open later this year.

Here’s Maria Sharapova at the Sony Ericsson Open, hitting before her semifinal match against Andrea Petkovic. Petko was ailing (shoulder) and Maria ran away with it: 3-6, 6-0, 6-2.

Svetlana Kuznetsova lost in her opening round of the BNP Paribas Open to American (and wildcard) Christina McHale, who took her out 7-6 (4), 7-6 (7). While Sveta looked good — like, dropped-pounds-in-the-double-digits good — she was simply outplayed from the baseline by the more consistent McHale. McHale lost a three-setter to Nadia Petrova in the subsequent round. (Draw: Women’s Singles.)

For the curious: that Fila shirt on Sveta’s only for practice, alas, and is not for sale to the public. Sometimes a girl has to have something that’s just hers, yknow?
