the aussie open in greyscale

January 19, 2009

At this year’s Australian Open, players are celebrating the Australian summer with bright kits in shades of blue, green, orange, yellow. But there are some who have chosen a cleaner black-and-white slate, leaving their tennis games to do the talkin’.

Don’t adjust your screen: Spaniard Tommy Robredo defeated Bobby Reynolds 6-2, 7-5, 6-1 in the first round. Robredo wore a simple Sergio Tacchini polo to complete his look. Compatriot Feli Lopez disappointed us with his anemic Joma kit. The 27th seed lost to Gilles Muller 6-3, 7-6 (5), 4-6, 4-6, 16-14.

Meanwhile, Andy Roddick couldn’t care less if he played in a potato sack (as long as he wins another Grand Slam!), so it’s no surprise to see another ho-hum shirt from Lacoste. His first round scalp was Bjorn Rehnquist, whom he beat by dropping only four games.

And top marks go to the sponsorless Australian Casey Dellacqua, whose wardrobe — with its moving Target bullseye — has shown us that black and white can be used to spice up many a tennis outfit; she’s had a few good ones since the beginning of this year. Who makes her clothes, anyway? Eh, it won’t really matter anymore this week. Dani Hantuchova took her out 7-6 (11), 6-4.

reebok goes feminine – amelie mauresmo

January 21, 2008

Amelie Mauresmo continues her lackadaisical performance as of late by bowing out of the Aussie Open’s third round. She lost to Casey Dellacqua 6-3, 4-6, 4-6.

But we give her props for that lovely Reebok separates. The v-neck is significantly more flattering than the collar on her Wimbledon wear from last year.

Buy: The Spring RBK Pro Tradition skort and tank are both available for $39.99.

Casey hits the bullseye: Hometown darling Dellacqua, who will likely be signed by Nike after this tournament, also cashed in on her revelation that Target Australia was her favorite place to shop.

Target did the logical thing and sent the 22-year-old on a shopping spree, with photographers in tow.

style short balls: tennis week magazine, sunfeast fashion, hingis’ gear, agassi’s sandals, etc.

September 18, 2007

Back in the fray: IMG-backed Tennis Week Magazine furthers its makeover plans by announcing an eight-issue publication schedule for 2008 and a relaunch of its website ( in November. The publication will be headed by Randy Master. TSF can’t wait to see the goods! (via marketwire)

Speaking of IMG: LAT reports that ex-HBO Chief Executive Chris Albrecht has been brought in to IMG to beef up domestic distribution of programming surrounding the agency-owned events (such as fashion weeks, sporting events, etc.).

[Insert slicing pun here]: This cute chopping board via hopehope.

Hingis decides on racquet: TSF doesn’t usually talk racquets, but it piqued our interest that Martina Hingis did not have a racquet sponsor for most of the summer — she played with an all-black demo (with a white grip) — but that has now changed. Per Stephanie Myles, Hingis is now playing with the Yonex RQiS 2.

PETA, Can You Hear Me?: Hingis owns up to owning a fancy chinchilla shawl. It’s cold in Switzerland, she says. (via Tennis Week)

(OT) Patrolling London: The Times‘ London Fashion Week coverage has this great bit on the eccentric men darting around at the shows.

Agassi flips out: Andre Agassi slapped Target with a lawsuit for continuing to market flip-flops with the Agassi name even after his reps had told the retailer to stop. The sandals, once sold under “Mossimo Agassi”, are now just Mossimo. (Buy the sandals.) (via

Rebound Ace RIP: It makes sense (timing-wise) that the Australian Open’s courts are already being torn up in time for 2008’s first Grand Slam.

Speaking of effed up courts: Unlike the entire Serbian team, the clay courts used for the Davis Cup tie between Australia and Serbia (hosted in Belgrade) aren’t so hot.

Calcutta serves up a fashion ‘Feast: The Sunfeast Open in Calcutta rode into town a week after the latest India Fashion Week. And so to open this week’s tournament, the ladies participated in the Miss Players Fashion show on Sunday night. Maria Kirilenko, wore an evening dress from Wills Lifestyle. Other players who walked down the runway: Marion Bartoli, also in a black dress; Yaroslova Shvedova and Hana Smorova, both in capris and t-shirts; Sunitha Rao, dressed in red and white; Tara Iyer; Alexandra Wosniak; and Vania King.

target launches GO: Libertine collection

July 16, 2007

(That’s Maria Sharapova at a preview party for Target’s GO: Libertine collection, hosted in May at the Los Angeles home of Johnson Hartig.)

Fashionistas rejoiced today as the mass retailer — who’s partnered with such labels as Paul & Joe, Patrick Johnson, Stella McCartney, and Luella Bartley — launched this latest Design For All collaboration on the web and in stores. But some recoiled because this line once only available to the elite will make its way to the farthest reaches of suburbia.

Hartig and Cindy Greene, the bi-coastal design duo behind Libertine (read up on them here), created a collection combining a vintage aesthetic and prepster chic “with bold colors, iconic graphics, rich fabrics and classic silhouettes.”

The collection ranges in prices from $12.99 – $39.99, and includes the line includes both summer stapes (bermuda shorts, pleated skirts, etc.) and fun pieces such as shirtdresses, silk bow-front blouses, cropped jackets, and silk scarves.

Hey, what about the guys?: As usual, Target has left out the guys. Distract yourselves by browsing Miami-based designer Tomas Maier‘s latest collection. Some of those swim shorts look pretty good…
