no djoke: novak goes shirtless in vogue

May 19, 2011

Consider it the ultimate tennis bitch slap. Sure, Novak Djokovic is by far the hottest thing on the tennis circuit right now, but for Anna Wintour to go as far and shoot the world no. 2 for a spread on the mag’s website and a bikini shot worth two (three if you want to study hard) glances, is so … un-Federer.

Is Mirka seething? Well, we can’t quite know. But Djoko looks fantastic in the black swim trunks, seen above on the entrance of Vogue.com today and below in the image, which was taken by Norman Jean Roy. Roy has plenty of high-quality fashion accolades to his name, including Vanity Fair and Details alongside Vogue, of course. He took this well-known image of Lindsay Lohan for the cover of Vanity Fair.

So is Anna over Rog? Naw. We doubt it. But would he ever pose in a tiny black swimsuit like that? We sort of doubt. Below, another look at the bikini and after the cut, Djoko wears … clothes. The shoot took place in Miami during the Sony Ericsson Open.

tennis for the style set: a breakdown

June 22, 2009

Style.com takes a look at summer sports through their glasses, breaking down how the fashionistas view the worlds of surfing, tennis, golf, riding, and diving.

For tennis, special shout-outs go to Anna Wintour, L’Wren Scott, Alexandre Herchcovitch, curator Kohle Yohannan, Tina Chai, Hilary Rhoda, Sophia Hesketh, and Poppy Delevingne. Thakoon Panichgul apparently plays on public courts (LES ones are his fave), and Tory Burch does doubles all summer in Southampton.

Of course they toast Roger as the sport’s official mascot (is this the beginning of Rafa backlash?); Brooklyn Decker gets groupie-of-the-moment (we would’ve given it to Bec Hewitt), and give love to NYC’s Mason’s Tennis Mart (on 56 E. 53rd St.).

Not least is anticipation of how the tail end of the 2009 U.S. Open will conflict with the opening of the Spring 2010 runway shows.

Venus Williams and ALT strike again!

May 6, 2008

The superhero team of Venus Williams and Andre Leon Talley strike again, this time arriving together for the Costume Institute’s gala opening of the exhibition “Superheroes: Fashion and Fantasy” at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Venus came out in a Carolina Herrera gown with Fred Leighton jewels while Andre wore Giorgio Armani; both were shrouded by a red Chanel cape apropos for the occasion.

George Clooney, Julia Roberts, Anna Wintour, and Armani chaired the $15,000-a-head gala that brought out the A-listers.

Wintour wore Chanel Haute Couture (by none other than Karl Lagerfeld) — think bighorn sheep circa 2050 — while the men’s best dressed included Zac Posen in a blue velvet tux and hottie Marc Jacobs in classic black with muse Sofia Coppola in tow.

From the Telegraph:

Inside the museum, guests were dwarfed by 30ft statues of Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman, contemporary versions of the ancient superheroes sculpted in marble in the museum’s Graeco-Roman gallery.

The “Superheroes” exhibition opens with a mirrored illusion of Clark Kent morphing into Superman and features radical catwalk creations by some of the world’s top designers and comic book costumes from Hollywood blockbusters such as Spiderman and Batman.

Pride of place is given to the heavy-metal suit-of-armour worn by Robert Downey Jr in “Iron Man”, the new movie which took more than £50 million at the box office on its opening weekend. Dinner was served in the Met’s 15 B.C. Egyptian Temple of Dendur, with tables arranged amidst massive sculptures of ‘Kryptonite’.

Sharapova celebrates her 21st in Lanvin

April 23, 2008

Maria Sharapova celebrated her 21st birthday at Tenjune last night with a party thrown by Tag Heuer and attended by her nearest and dearest, which included Michelle Trachtenberg, a compact Dave Annable, Vera Wang, Anna Wintour, Doo.ri, and the duo behind Ruffian. The invitation-only crowd danced to the music of DJ Cassidy What’s up with Tenjune being the favored venue of tennis players to party?

Masha looked good wearing a blue Lanvin dress from the Spring 2008 RTW. She continues to flirt with loose fabric, this time in the form of a mini-train that went down the back of her outfit. It’s the Wimbledon swan dress all over again!

She added a tiara, a vintage clutch, and a pair of black, peep-toe Louboutins to round out the look.

nole djokovic = fashion’s new love?

March 30, 2008

Save for his early round loss at this week’s Sony Ericsson Open, Novak Djokovic‘s goal to supplant Roger Federer at the top seems to be on track. First, he defeated the World No. 1 at the Australian Open, then captured last week’s Masters Series title at Indian Wells.

Even in fashion, Nole is looking up (we thought it was a hopeless cause). He cleans up for April’s issue of Men’s Vogue — the one with A-Rod on the cover. No, not that A-Rod. The other one.

Novak Djokovic - Men’s Vogue - April 2008

The story by William Finnegan follows Nole in Belgrade in December 2007, when he was in town for that mixed doubles exo.

It gave a brief intro of the Serb (childhood during the war, tennis in a ski resort, knack for impersonations); talked about the increasing pressures of his celebrity (“People recognize me and — I don’t really want to say bother me — but they just come up. It’s not really relaxing. All eyes on you.”); and mentioned the Djokovics-run sports marketing firm, Family Sport, whose goal is do bring Nole to the world.

adidas’ Novak Djokovic line, 2008

The company has already collaborated with adidas, his gear sponsor, to produce a line with his name and silhouettes of his groundstrokes. It’s plastered on shirts, keychains, balls, and even a yo-yo. We’re not talking high refined concepts here, but I assume $$$ and curbing counterfeiting are the main priorities.

Shop: Browse and buy all the goods, including his first memoir, My first Grand Slam, at his store.

One more: Aside from the photo of Nole above (shot in Monte Carlo, where he resides), there’s another one of him in spiffier clothes. Once I scan, I’ll link to it.

Nike Air Zoom Mo GT Court

Getting its due: It’s refreshing to see that both Anna Wintour and Jay Fielden aren’t afraid to publish stories in Men’s Vogue which revolve around tennis. They’ve done a few stories on Roger (one cover, even), sponsored last month’s Sampras/Federer MSG exo, and even mentioned Francesca Schiavone in a piece. Francesca effin Schiavone. Who does that?! Only hardcore tennis fans, that’s who. Props to them. This month, along with the Nole piece, they also included a quick write-up on the history behind Nike‘s Air Zoom Mo GT Court — i.e., John McEnroe‘s kicks (pictured above).

Pete Sampras, Roger Federer, Billie Jean King

Mano a mono: It’s already in the running for Most Overanalyzed Meaningless Tennis Match in History, but Bonnie D. Ford makes no apologies for chiming in. Roger Federer beat Pete Sampras 6-3, 6-7 (4), 7-6 (6).

Roger Federer, Pete Sampras, both in Nike

Fashion: We enjoyed the revival of Roger’s tuxedo look (from last year’s U.S. Open), and we were ecstatic that Pete finally came out with a new look. As of Saturday, while playing an exo against Todd Martin in Columbus, he was still wearing a style from 10 months ago.

Tick tock: How appropriate that Roger came out wearing a Rolex (which he has endorsed since 2006). Is he counting down his time at the top?

In case you missed it: Roger’s lackluster play in 2008 (no titles for him so far) was attributed to some food poisoning before Kooyong, and also to mono. He keeps himself relatively injury-free, but you can’t really escape the microscopic things, I guess. (Read a letter from Roger to his fans addressing his illness.)

And perhaps we’re all just suffering from a little too much Roger. (Even fan club prez Anna Wintour was seen with another athlete — gasp! — LeBron James.)

The rest push back: He wasn’t even doing so well with the media, who’ve tried to bait his peers to comment on his observation of Andy Murray‘s game after losing to the Scot in Dubai.

Murray wouldn’t get into it. Nole: “Murray has a great style and talent and knows how to play at any one moment… Roger doesn’t like it when you get a lot of balls back against him.” Nadal:: Murray “is getting very good results with his style and if you are doing well why do you have to change?”

Junior Ore, Dennis Kudla

Warm-up: Jordan and I had a talk the other day about who would be picked to play the warm-up match before the NetJets Showdown. Jordan was hoping Donald Young or someone like that. Instead, the audience got treated to Denis Kudla and Junior Ore. Ore says Marcelo Rios is his idol. That’s pretty awesome; you don’t hear Rios mentioned that much anymore. Another: Here’s a photo from the press conference for the exhibition.

fashion focus: roger (with a g) at de la renta

September 11, 2007

Roger with a ‘G’* was clearly the talk of 583 Park Avenue, a decommissioned Georgian church which was the site of Oscar de la Renta‘s Spring 2008 show.

But as soon as The Polyphonic Spree started playing and the models made their way down the catwalk, the audience turned their attention away from the tennis star and towards the beautiful collection from Mr. de la Renta. Both the day wear and evening gowns were awesome.

Look-see: The whole collection, via style.com.

Roll call: Other sightings include Roger’s girlfriend, Mirka Vavrinec; Amanda Peet; and the bobbleheads of Anna Wintour and Victoria Beckham.

watching the men’s semis: nole + ferrer, roger + kolya

September 8, 2007

Congrats to Novak Djokovic for downing David Ferrer in three easy sets — 6-4, 6-4, 6-3; and to Roger Federer for beating Nikolay Davydenko (le sigh) after a seesaw third set that saw a million breaks of serve (7-5, 6-1, 7-5).

A few things I noticed while I watched these U.S. Open men’s semis with Chris and Matt:

  • Using the ball bounce as a beat was great sound for the opening montage of CBS‘ coverage.
  • We laughed out loud at the Tina Fey AmEx commercial. It was like a short episode of 30 Rock! “No, the other kind of german shepherd!”
  • Srdjan Djokovic takes off his shirt after his son Nole does so after his win. And the father encourages the rest of the Djokovic box to do so. Uhm, NO.
  • Apparently Justin Gimelstob was talking about Tommy Haas‘ nipples on last night’s episode of The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.
  • As of 3-2 in the first set, CBS had not panned to Mirka, nor had the commentators Dick Enberg, John McEnroe, and Mary Carillo made any mention of R-Fed besty Tiger Woods.
  • We were fans of Ferrer’s multiple necklace charms, as well as Davydenko’s wedding-ring-on-the-neck. Kolya’s hot wife, Irina, was there to cheer him on. As was his brother and coach, Eduard (also wearing Airness).
  • Celebs in the stands: Catherine Zeta-Jones, plus Kirk and Michael Douglas. Also Robert De Niro, Ilie Nastase, Boris Becker, and Anna Wintour.
  • Nevermind. The Mirka sighting was at 3-3 in the first set.
  • And comparison to Tiger in the eighth game.
  • Kolya, in all his matches at this year’s Open, was never scheduled for a night match. Is this what being the fourth seed affords a player?
  • As Enberg waxed nostalgic over the last two weeks, he mentions that Jankovic has recently been signed to endorse toothpaste.
  • Speaking of Dick (dick?), did he really say something — at two different occasions, even — about Roger’s back muscles? He was in awe of Federer’s “two ridges…” Whaa?

i’m not one to stalk roger federer….

September 6, 2007

But if you are, take this tip from Hotel Chatter:

“For Four Seasons (hotel) employees this is quite a shock. We hear that Swiss tennis god Roger always stays at Four Seasons but this time people kept recommending The Carlyle (maybe Anna had a hand in this too?) So he switched his reservation and is staying on the same floor as the hotel’s general manager, James McBride, who has an apartment there. Now, Anna knows where to get an extra key.”

The hotel’s in the Upper East Side at 35 East 76th Street. Not sure what alias Roger (and girlfriend Mirka Vavrinec) registered under…

sightings from the stands: r-fed d. roddick

September 6, 2007

Two things: first, I want World News Now‘s Ryan Owens to whisper frivolous news stories in my ear (perhaps it’s just my insomnia talking?) Second, I miss Matt Savoie. Now onto the fun stuff…

I was following the tight three sets Roger Federer played against Roddick at last night’s U.S. Open quartefinals. Up until the third set, Roger, who won the first two sets in tiebreaks, was the only one who faced a break point. Unfortunately for the Texan, Federer ran away with the third set, breaking Andy twice to win 6-2.

The black-shirt affair brought out the big-hitters:

wintour and de la Renta - roger federer

What R-Fed tennis U.S. Open tennis match would be complete without the president of his fan club, Anna Wintour? To her left is the fabulously tortoise-shelled Oscar de la Renta.

Apparently, this fashion week’s most sought-after photo opp is Roger and Anna in the tents of Bryant Park (or wherever designers are showing). The papparazi are ready!

Last night’s second-round match between Roger Federer and Paul “MC” Capdeville brought out the big hitters: Oscar de la Renta, Ralph Lauren, and busy bee Vogue EIC Anna Wintour.

Of course, Roger’s devoted girlfriend, Mirka Vavrinec, was on hand to entertain the guests.

party #2: vogue hosts federer fete

August 25, 2007

Can I tell you how in love I am with New York magazine’s coverage of the U.S. Open thus far?

While Nole made buddies with a polo player, Roger Federer attended a party in his honor hosted by Vogue and Men’s Vogue editors-in-chief Anna Wintour and Jay Fielden. They threw the party at Wakiya, the chinese restaurant at the ultra-sexy Ian Schrager-designed Gramercy Park Hotel.

Roger was there with girlfriend Mirka, but he spent most of the night in the arms of Wintour, who introduced him to guests such as Diane Von Furstenberg, Vera Wang, Oscar de la Renta, and boys of Proenza Schouler (Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez).

From left to right: Wang, Jacobs, Von Furstenberg, de la Renta.

Throughout the night, NY had a chance to ask some tennis-related questions:

R-Fed on his favorite designer: “I like Prada a lot. I haven’t gotten much into the American designers yet, but this gives me the perfect opportunity to meet them all and get inspired by them and hopefully grab some more of their clothes.”

Wintour on tennis: It’s the only game she plays, her play is “passable”, and she plays at “Midtown Tennis on Eighth Avenue and 27th Street at six o’clock in the morning”.

And Fielden on tennis’ popularity in the fashion world: “I’m so guilty of liking golf — it’s so unchic. Why do these tennis guys look so good and dress so well even when they’re playing? Golfers are so schlumpy and awful. I wish I knew.” Oh, snap! (We like what Fielden’s done with Men’s Vogue btw.)

Vogue editrix Anna Wintour — the woman who put body dysmorphia on the map — says hello to Roger Federer‘s girlfriend, Mirka Vavrinec, before his third round match against Marat Safin.

Kris provides a caption: “Mirkaaaaa, I love the sunglasses, but you could stand to lose five pounds. Okay, twenty.”

(Scoreline: The fashion-forward Federer took down his Russian opponent in straight sets.)
